Captain's Log

Regarding the timeline and Star Trek cannon:

Our story begins about 10 years prior to Kirk’s command of the Enterprise. There will certainly be contradictions with recent productions in the Star Trek universe because I will be following FASA’s timeline of events and I haven’t been watching the latest movies or shows. From my experience with recent Star Trek productions, FASA’s version of events tells a better story anyway.

The biggest difference for this time period is that Star Fleet ships are equipped with lasers and accelerator cannons, not phasers and photons.

Rupak Singh

Commodore Rupak Singh
Race: Human, Indian ethnicity
Age: Late 50s
Service Record: Commodore Singh is the Fleet Commander of Colony Logistical Support in the Federation’s Fourth Quadrant and the Commanding officer of the USS Pas-de-Calais. Overseeing fleet movements in the entire quadrant takes most of his time, so much of the day-to-day command duties aboard his own ship falls to his first officer.

Vladimir Chekov

Image

Commander Vladimir Chekov
Race: Human, Russian ethnicity
Age: Late 50s
Service Record: Commander Chekov is first officer aboard the USS Pas-de-Calaise. Chekov became a command officer early in his career, but was never given his own command. At this stage in his career it is obvious he never will have his own ship. Once a rising star of infinite potential, his Starfleet career is only remarkable in its seemingly inevitable slide into mediocrity. Jaded and tired, Chekov performs his duties with the efficiency and precision of his youth, but without the enthusiasm. The presence of fresh-faced, apple-cheeked cadets aboard ship, so full of optimism and potential, does little to improve his disposition.

The USS Pas-de-Calais is a Ptolemy Class Starship. The Ptolemy is a Transport-Tug.
This Youtube video gives a good explanation about this ship class.

The rest of the cadet class aboard the Pas-de-Calais

Post by Orvost » Fri Jun 19, 2020 11:26 pm

GM Note: Each of these characters graduated from the academy the same year as Shur, and a year behind Alik.

Image
Midshipman Serao Zh’rialrehr
Race: Andorian, main strain
Age: Mid 20s
Service Record: Serao is trained in communications and damage control. In an age when Star Fleet ships are each staffed primarily or exclusively by a specific race, Serao seeks opportunities to serve aboard alien ships. Since learning she would be serving aboard a human vessel, she has been giving herself a crash course on human languages and customs, while trying to adapt to their warmer temperature comfort zone.

There are two types of people who become Communication Officers: those with natural language talents, and the rare individuals who can effectively process multiple audio or visual stimuli simultaneously. Cadet Serao is one of the latter. For professional reasons, she has put much effort into studying languages, though she lacks any natural aptitude for it. The languages she has learned are all practical, non-exotic staples: Vulcan, Tellurite, Orion, Human, etc. She has learned a passing familiarity with about a dozen other languages—just enough to be able to identify the language when heard, without a deep comprehension of anything said. Klingonese is one such language for her. Shur soon realizes his knowledge of the Klingon language surpasses hers.

Image
Midshipman April Weathers
Race: Human, Australian ethnicity
Age: Mid 20s
Service Record: April is trained in Helm operations. A woman of striking looks in a male-dominated profession, April is used to being surrounded by men and being the center of their amorous attention. She moves through social situations with practiced grace, neither alienating the friendship of her male peers nor committing herself to them romantically.

Cadet Weathers makes it her personal mission to make sure you are all friends. And so far, she has succeeded. The shell of the most introverted and anti-social colleague cracks under her personal attention. Even if you have nothing in common with her, you find yourself leaning in to hear what she has to say and reciprocating her smile when the two of you lock eyes.

Image
Midshipman Miles Campeador
Race: Human, Spanish ethnicity
Service Record: Miles is trained in Security protocols. During his third year at the academy, Miles rose from complete obscurity to being the talk of the campus. That year, he was the judoka champion for his weight class, having won every bought that season without being thrown or pinned. His streak ended early in his fourth year and the fame and crowds faded, even though he won the judo championship again that year and was a varsity boxer. He disappeared altogether after graduation, though he seems to have finished Security Branch School.

Once at the Academy, Cadet Campeador walked into Shur Ijoda’s kendo class when he was looking for kempo karate. Shur had forgotten in incident until Campeador reminds him. He knows about Shur’s interest in the sword. When discussing fighting styles, Campeador frankly admits the superiority of any formalized armed combat system over any formalized unarmed system, even though he spends so much time and effort learning unarmed combat techniques. During his time at Security Branch School, Campeador was learning Caitian unarmed techniques.

Food replication in Stardate 1/9400

Post by Orvost » Thu Jul 09, 2020 10:29 am

Food Replication
Image

In the distant future, when Picard captains the Enterprise, food replication will be perfected. Programable meals, almost indistinguishable from naturally prepared food, are created and delivered through transporter technology. In the near future, when Kirk captains the Enterprise, replicated food is colored squares of nutrient gel in five assorted flavors. In the current year, replicated food is at an even more primitive level of sophistication. First, making replicated food is done through a slow process akin to 3-D printing. Second, while trying not to offend the tastes of over a dozen races, the Federation settled on replicated food flavors that are either bland or barely palatable to anyone. Even in its primitive state, replicated food is the staple of your diet aboard a starship, although it is extensively supplemented with fresh foodstuffs.
