Name: Kakita Ryoko

Clan: Crane

School: Daidoji Scout School

Physical Details: Ryoko is a graceful young woman, with the white hair common among the Crane. She usually wears it tied back in a practical manner, uncaring about whatever current fashion may be. Both trained as a scout to live in the wilderness and indifferent to the traditions of Rokugan’s courts, she dresses in a simple, ascetic manner, disdaining fancy clothes, jewelry and the like.

Publicly Known Advantages / Disadvantages: Ascetic, Black Sheep, Fascination: Music, Way of the Land: Daidoji Territory

History:
Ryoko grew up in the Kakita family of the Crane Clan, with her parents, Junzei and Mako, expecting her to attend the family dojo for courtiers when she grew old enough. Thus, they did nothing to discourage her fascination with music, a suitable thing for a courtier to know; they even had her trained in singing under a respected master, Asahina Marashi. They were concerned that she was something of a free spirit, indifferent to tradition and ceremony—and had to discipline her on more than one occasion for giving away family resources to heimin families in need. They assumed she would eventually grow out of this and become a proper samurai.

Unfortunately, when Ryoko was twelve, feeling stifled by the training she was receiving and wanting to pursue a life of music, she ran away from home to join a troop of wandering musicians that had passed through. The horrified musicians returned the girl to her parents, begging their foregiveness—knowing they could easily be executed if they took Ryoko in. Junzei and Mako were furious—but with Ryoko, not the musicians, who they praised for doing their duty, then dismissed. Thinking that continuing to train as a courtier would provide too many temptations, they decided they needed to break her and sent her to the Daidoji to train as a bushi. They sternly informed her they wanted nothing more to do with her until she had proven herself a proper samurai. Junzei and Mako still care for their daughter, but believed that extreme measures were necessary to correct the girl. Ryoko begged Asahina Marashi to intervene on her behalf, but he refused, saying her actions had brought dishonor not only to her parents, but to him as her teacher as well. Heartbroken, Ryoko allowed herself to be sent away to train as a bushi.

Although her parents had expected her to be trained as Iron Warrior, Ryoko managed to get herself enlisted in the Daidoji Scout School. She hoped that she would find at least some measure of freedom that way. Recently, she has been assigned as a yoriki to a Crane magistrate, Doji Kirino. On the one hand, Ryoko likes the opportunities this gives her to travel and see new places and people. On the other hand, she chafes under the close supervision of her superior.

Ryoko's natural temperament is that of a free spirit—kind and generous to others, but unwilling to bow to others’ will. Her bitter experiences as a girl have, however, left her somewhat resentful—she’s still willing to help those in real need and seeks to have her own way, but her personality can sometimes be sour. She still retains her passion for music and when she listens to it or performs herself, much of her bitterness can slip away.

NAME: Hiruma Shonogen

CLAN: Crab

SCHOOL: Shiba Bushi

SCHOOL: Thin, wiry, slight of build. He keeps his hair short and has a Fu Manchu mustache that has reached his chin.

Publically Known Advantages/Disadvantages: Different School, Sacred Weapon: Kaiu Blade

HISTORY: Shonogen's father is a Hiruma scout and a respected veteran of the shadowlands. His mother is the daughter of a wealthy Yasuki merchant patron. Shonogen and his siblings were raised as poor, landless Hiruma, but grandpa Yasuki Yoshito indulged his grandchildren and spared no expense getting them into the best schools and making sure they received the best training available. Shonogen trained with the Shiba as a yojimbo so he could bring their techniques for guarding shugenja back to the Crab and serve among the Kuni. Training among the Phoenix opened his mind and woke a tremendous appetite for knowledge. His Shiba sensei look upon him with pride as he has embraced much of what it means to be a Phoenix.

At his recent gempuku, his grandfather presented him with a magnificent heirloom katana.

Name: Doji Kyousuke
Clan: Crane

School: Doji Courtier School

Physical Details: Kyousuke is in his early 20s, of average height and lithe build. His hair is dyed a pristine white, the bleach obviously applied carefully and frequently. He arranges his hair simply, just a long braid down his back. He always dresses in the most current fashion, at least in the courts of the Crane. He also holds a silk and wooden fan, which when opened portrays a crane in flight.

Publicly Known Advantages / Disadvantages: Social Position (Doji Family Diplomat), Wealthy, Servant (Artisan - Painter), Rumormonger, Soft-Hearted

History:
Doji Kyousuke grew up in what the other Clans would imagine a stereotypical Doji family to be. Extensive political connections, fertile and profitable lands, fancy clothing, cultured interactions, and rising influence with everyone they meet. This of course can't be true for everyone, as there are only so many resources to go around. Not everyone can achieve "The Rokugani Dream". But at least for his family, their fortunes have been rising for several generations.

His father, Doji Hejiko, managed to achieve an Imperial marriage to Otomo Aiko. The Fortunes did not bless this union with a gaggle of children, but they were merciful enough in the twelfth year of their marriage with a male child. With all their resources focused on just one child, he got the best education and training to be had. This of course included the courtly arts and political maneuvering. The only alteration from his father's path was his interest in Iaijutsu. His forebears in the courts had always had a Kakita yojimbo to bear a katana in their name, but Doji Kyousuke took that burden upon himself. One note is that he has only accepted duels to first blood, and has avoided anything smelling like a duel to the death.

Name:
Mirumoto Gensai

Clan:
Dragon

School:
Mirumoto Bushi

Physical Details:
With a muscular physique as sturdy as an oak and nearly as tall in stature, there are few Rokugani except those more commonly found among the mighty warrior families of the Crab that would rival Gensai in such things; an unsurprising fact when one is made aware of his mother's Hida heritage and her similarly imposing height a testament to this fact.

The rigorous hardships commonplace in a ronin's life and travels have hardened the young man, making him appear slightly older than he actually is. His shaggy black hair is kept fairly short, and a solemn expression is often set deeply across his stubbled and angular face. As expected of a shugyōsha, Gensai's apparel is bereft of any mon or crests that would tie him to any specific Clan or Family. The only distinguishing mark to be found on his clothes is a crest of his own design, a bellflower he claims represents the sincerity behind his commitment towards fulfilling the goals of his Pilgrimage.

Publicly Known Advantages / Disadvantages:
Large, Social Disadvantage (Ronin - Musha Shugyō)

History:
Amidst a Clan suffering from an inexplicably perilous decline in birthrates in recent times, perhaps as a punishment from the Great Fortune of Fertility herself, Kisshōten, it was understandably bewildering to those privy to such ominous concerns that the union between Mirumoto Shuzen and Hida Tomoe had been conspicuously exempt from this perceived curse and instead blessed with five healthy children.

Born the middle child, Gensai, known as Genmaru prior to his gempukku, grew up with neither the heavy burden of expectations and responsibilities placed upon the shoulders of his older siblings or the fond adoration received by his younger kin. Consequently this nurtured a wild and rebellious streak within Gensai that would follow him well into his late adolescence. Running around and playing with children below his station, an unsavory preference for red meats (especially “mountain tuna”), disrespectful behavior towards his elders, and slacking off in his lessons at the dojo were but a handful of the litany of issues that highlighted Genmaru’s impetuous attitude. Despite his parents and siblings love for Genmaru, the strain brought on by his antics frustrated them to no end, and some feared that such deplorable actions would inevitably bring great shame upon himself and his family.

The only person that seemed able to command a great deal of respect and admiration from this wayward scion was a venerable retainer and close friend of the family, a tattooed man by the name of Togashi Masahide. Masahide recognized the underlying problems that fueled Genmaru’s unruliness and offered to mentor the boy in an effort to curb these tendencies. Genmaru, who’d become more than well acquainted to the lash of a bamboo rod by his previous tutors, was surprised to find no such punitive measures forthcoming from the kindly ise zumi. Instead through sage guidance and patient remonstrations, Masahide had succeeded in teaching the young Genmaru to rein in his more unseemly manners and the boy in turn established a genuine rapport with the one mentor that treated him with benevolent kindness, seeing in him untapped potential where others saw only a shameful and embarrassing disappointment.

Unfortunately these habits would resurface in the most untimely manner a year after Genmaru’s gempukku. The newly named Gensai, in recognition of his entry into adulthood and all the responsibilities that his newly acquired position entailed, was invited to attend a minor Court gathering at the personal request of his father. The events that followed at what was intended to be a simple function culminated in a scandal with Gensai as the primary culprit. So egregious was the breach in etiquette that only a duel to the death or seppuku could wipe away such dishonor.

No one could anticipate however that the young bushi’s life would be spared in exchange for Masahide’s, who quietly proffered his own life in his former student’s stead as atonement for failing in his duties as a sensei and gravely remind Gensai of his obligations. His own desperate pleas ignored by his stricken father and his mentor, Gensai could only watch on in barely restrained anguish as the man that he was honored to call friend sacrificed himself for his sake, and for the first time the fledgling samurai truly grasped that his insolence begat dire consequences.

A year spent in mourning and deep introspection would pass before Gensai unexpectedly requested permission from the provincial daimyo to depart on a Musha Shugyō. Despite initial misgivings from family and fellow peers, those who had been observant of the young man noted a dramatic shift in his formerly headstrong disposition. Recognizing this as not an idle appeal but instead an earnestly driven claim, the petition was eventually made with the prerequisite testimony of one of Gensai’s former sensei to reinforce its chance for approval.

Several months have passed since the request was granted and the somber departure from his home, family, and clan that followed. As one might expect the path of a ronin has proven to be an undeniably arduous one, but it is a path that Gensai does not regret traveling upon. Instead he has embraced the pilgrimage with a stoic dedication borne from a genuine aspiration towards self-improvement among other sincerely honorable motives.

Name
Asahina Kanko-Cho

Clan
Crane

School
Asahina Shugenja School

Physical Details
Kanko-Cho is having a calm and soothing aura. She always wears light blue clothing with weaved in calming motives like spring flowers, waves and butterflies. If she is wearing jewelry it is silver kanzashi with butterflies and sometimes kanzashi made of fabric with butterflies and spring flowers, regardless of the season.
The wakizashi on her side has a white saya, lacquered in a matte style and the Mon of the Asahina is painted in a glossy white laque on the Saya. The hilt is wrapped with a lightly blue cord. Although it is of a good quality, at first glance it seems rather bland. The scroll satchel Kanko-Cho wears is carved from bamboo.
Her white bleached hair is mostly tied to a simple bun fixed with a plain wooden hair stick. Only for special events Kanko-Cho uses more complex hairstyles and silver or silken kanzashi. The most noticeable thing is her discolored left eye. While the right eye is a clear emerald green, her left eye his fading from emerald green to sapphire blue.

Publicly Known Advantages / Disadvantages
Sensation, Soul of Artistry:Artisan / Evil Eye (left eye is discolored from green to blue)

History
Kanko-Cho is the youngest daughter of Asahina Tadao - a Kimono tailor - and Rie, an artisan from the Doji. Rie was surprised that her youngest child has the talent to be educated as a Shugenja. All the more reason to be protective of her. The girl therefor grew up more or less pampered and only her eldest brother, Ichigo, had the guts to tell her no and show her a glimpse of the real world, trying to break down the illusion of an ideal and peaceful world. Maybe that is the reason why she feels so close to him.
Still, while her mother and siblings were there to protect the innocence of this girl, one day something happened. Something which left a scar in her soul. The girl went to bed at night, like always, and when she woke up, from a noise, no one was there. Which is unusual, because a servant was ordered by Rie to always stay at Kanko-Chos room. The little saw a wolf trying to come into her room and when she screamed for help, no one came. Well, after a while a kami of air protected her, swirling all about the little frightened girl, trying to keep the wolf away, buying time for her family to wake up and get to her.
Since this incident the young Shugenja is afraid of being left alone. When she reached the age needed to start her education and had to leave for the temple to start her training as a Shugenja, some of her Sensei came to realize that this child was able to befriend some kami of the Element Air, although she did not have any kind of training yet. Her father is a Shugenja, but was seldom at home and he is not that well-versed with the kami, and her mother is unable to commune with the elemental spirits. So it had to be some talent.
In the last three years of her education she had Asahina Kyo as a mentor to give her better guidance on how to handle a befriended kami and controlling her fear. At some point, shortly before her gempukku, Kanko-Chos left eye started to slowly turn blue. Some of the other Shugenja in training started to avoid her and even a few Sensei were no longer able to look her into the eyes. Only Kyo seemed to behave unchanged and treated her the same as always. Kyo also assured her that the change in her eye is not related to impurity or bad luck, like some Shugenja and Sensei tried to make Kanko-Cho believe, but a side-effect of her strong bond to the kami of air and their friendship.
Kanko-Cho passed all the exams and is now a Shugenja and also a talented artisan, but when she came home to celebrate with her family, her mother was afraid of letting her come into the house, due to the discoloration of her daughters left eye. Only her eldest brother Ichigo came out, greeted her and drank some sake with his sister. He even stayed with her in a guesthouse. But Kanko-Cho did soon go back to the temple to fulfill her duty as a Shugenja.

Kōnotori Mura : White Stork Village (Eventually Oni Mura)
This small village is a typical Crane Clan village, it is pleasantly arranged, the peasants work the rice fields with vigor and the weather is always nice. Near to the sea the village gained its name by the many white storks that migrate through each summer from their breeding ground in the Uebi Marshes to the Mantis Isles to the South East where they spend the winter. A garden is actually set up for the arrival of the storks of dog wood and lilies.

Important People in Kōnotori Mura

Doji Hirawara – Crane Courtier, Political Leader, Magistrate. A decent magistrate, he is happy with his place here, he has found a balance between love and duty and plans to marry a fine samurai-ko soon that he has affection for. Is a patron of the arts. Dead in his estate by tsunami.

Daidoji Juro – Crane Bushi, Yoriki, Militia Leader. He is leader of the small militia here, mostly the Doshin Ashigaru. This far in the Crane lands he mostly has to deal with coastal raids from the Mantis and the occasional lawless brawl in the sake house among travelers passing through. Escaped the wrath of the waves.

Daidoji Kishiko – Iuchi Jun’s cousin, and assistant to Daidoji Juro. Survived by the PCs actions.

Asahina Kyo – Crane Shugenja, Keeper of the Shrine of Sebun Ronin. She is a Shugenja of Air, an older woman who is reverent and yet jovial at times. She enjoys art. She doesn’t like Supai that much. And has a bit of a dislike for Magistrate Hirarwara and enjoys putting him in difficult (not dangerous) positions. Status Unknown.

Supai – Retired Scorpion Monk. He is a komusō monk, wearing a tengai reed hood and playing the shakuhachi bamboo flute typical of his order. Survives the Waves.

Otomo Okane – Imperial Tax Collector (Uncle of Doji Kyousuke). He has just finished a large tax collection survey of the Southern Crane lands. Kyousuke’s mother, Otomo Aiko is the younger sister of Okane. Presumed dead by the tsunami but his body is never found.

Seppun Mamoru – Imperial Yojimbo. He’s a bit brash, and arrogant, which is why he’s sent on these terrible missions. Survives the waves, his master doesn’t.

Tsume no Doji Takashi – Crane Vassal, Artisan. He trained at the Kakita Duelist Academy but wished he could have trained at the Artisan Academy instead. Is present after a trip south to complete his training and is returning north. Survives thanks to the PCs.

Doji Kirino – (Kakita Ryoko/Muskrat’s NPC Story) A crane clan magistrate investigating things in town. Died in the waves.

Doji Aiko - Crane courtier. She is the mother of Doji Kyousuke and sister to Otomo Okane. Born an Otome she married into the Crane and took their name. Survives by actions of the PCs.

Shiokarai – The heimin woman that runs the Cresting Wave Sake House. She can get a bit salty if people criticize her establishment. Dead in the waves.

Yasuki Yoshito - (Hiruma Shonogen/Orvost’s Grandfather) – The old man made the trip to Shonogen’s Gempukku in the Shiba lands at the Shiba Dojo, the only one of Shonogen’s family to do so. The pair are traveling home to the Crab lands. He has taken this route because the old man once came here as a youth, and met the love of his life in the White Stork Garden. Duty prevented him from marrying her (Asahina Kaori), but he returns here from time to time to remember those days. What happened to her in all those passing years he doesn’t know. Status unknown.

Kakita Ringo – A young man, jovial, enjoys laughing, but is a proponent for change. He’s recently planted fruit in the garden, and gives it away to anyone that asks regardless of station. He is fond of quoting his sensei who has all sort of odd and funny sayings. He has a wife in town, and two children already even as this young age. He’s a darn good swordsman too. His father is Doji Chomei, his one son Ichiro is present in the garden with him at the start of the adventure. Dead, and all of his family too.
