Act II Scene I: Aftermath of the Battle of Axanar

Stardate 1/9407. The Federation has enjoyed a century of relative peace within its borders. The long and devastating war against the Romulan Star Empire is all but forgotten and the Federation’s border with them remains tense, but stable. The Klingons remain silent as well, perhaps still engrossed in a conflict with the unknown enemy on the far side of their empire. The Federation’s peace-time focus is now on research and exploration, although Tellarites and Andorians argue for a stronger navy of gunships and frigates. The compromise is the new Constitution Class Cruiser. Equipped with the most advanced weaponry and home to state-of-the-art scientific research and medical facilities, these debutants of the fleet can operate for years beyond the logistical support of star bases. It is the dream of every starry-eyed Star Fleet recruit to serve on these ships.

Aboard the King in Prussia

Post by Orvost » Sun Dec 10, 2023 6:39 am

It is easy to raise comms with the Pas-de-Calais again, and Cadet Serao is always willing to speak with Alik when she can manage. Unfortunately, she can only further explain what she said in their last communication: The Axanar battlefield stretches over a large swath of the Axanar system and the Pas-de-Calais has moved to a more distant area of the battlefield to tend to other matters. While they are still in communication range, they are far beyond transport range. It may be a few hours before the Pas-de-Calais is able to relieve the King in Prussia.

Alik’s mind races at his dwindling options. The Pas-de-Calais warped in with the Cygnian hospital ship Asclepius, perhaps they can render aid. Or maybe Alik can hack the computer system and reestablish life support himself. Or perhaps he could program a containment field in the medical bay that would include life support, a pocket of breathable air inside an energy field bubble. Or maybe something else...

"Campeador, get Asclepius on the comms! They're a damned hospital ship, helping the hurt is their thrice-damned job! Tell them to get over here right the hell now. I'll keep trying to get life support online." He himself runs to the computer controls, trying to get life support online. He also hopes that Campeador manages a better choice of words with the hospital ship. Alik isn't in the right frame of mind to manage diplomatic speak, and he assumes that swearing over the comms wouldn't put them in the mood to go out of their way to help him.

Alik takes position at the science officer station on the bridge and tries to bypass the ship’s doctor lockout on life support. Simply raising life support to default settings should be easier to achieve than making major modifications. Alik spent the several hours rebuilding the computer, so his familiarity with the system may help as well. As Alik works, Campeador gives an update on his efforts to hail the Asclepius:

“Ambulance shuttle incoming to retrieve wounded. ETA: 20 minutes!”
Alik can try an INT and Computer Operation roll.

Alik swears inside his mind, but manages to keep it internal only. Campeador can't make the hospital ship move any faster, no matter how much the engineer might wish otherwise. He just does what he can, concentrating on the computer system in front of him.

Try as he may, Alik is unable to bypass the ship doctor lockout on life support. The ship computer shows him little gratitude for the hours he spent bringing it back to life. Nineteen minutes later, while Alik is cursing and slamming his palms into the computer keypad, the Cygnian ambulance shuttle arrives.

The Cygnians take the two wounded team members aboard their shuttle and begin treatment within the life support atmosphere of the shuttle. Zea regains consciousness and use of her arms. Her shattered forearms are set, put in braces, and receive a lattice of regenerative growth. As long as she doesn’t lift anything heavy, she is cleared for light duty and to continue the mission. The injured security guard is a different story: his environmental suit was damaged by Klingon disrupter fire before he was spaced. Unconscious, he was unable to repressurize his suit and expired when his oxygen quickly depleted.

After about an hour, the Cygnian ambulance shuttle leaves with the body of the dead team member. By then Zea has restored life support aboard the King in Prussia and the mission can continue. Over the next nine hours, Alik and Zea are able to achieve most of their objectives by the time the Pas-de-Calais rendezvous with them.

Zea is able to:
• Bring the ship’s medical bay back to working order.

• Determine with 90% certainty that the first body in medical with the laser shot to the head
was the victim of murder and not suicide.

• Find audio medical records taken as the ship was in combat. From these files, she is able to
determine that the Klingon boarding parties were eager to close range with the Starfleet
defenders and make use of their various bladed melee implements. Records suggest the
Klingons were able to get in close many times and that Starfleet personnel suffered greatly
when forced into a physical altercation with Klingons. Most of the casualties must have been
evacuated with the crew, as the only bodies left are those in the morgue of the medical bay,
though records suggest many more casualties.

Alik is able to:
• Restore all major ship systems and make it space-worthy again.

• Retrace most of the events surrounding the last 72 hours of the King in Prussia:
The King in Prussia is a Starfleet Intelligence vessel. The ship was fitted with an
experimental weapon system. The nature of the weapon seems to be the most secretive part
of the ship’s mission and the highest target in the subsequent destruction of ship’s records.
The only thing Alik is able to find that may or may not hint at the nature of the weapon is a
news article about an academic lecture offered by Warren Shillinge of HiBeam Energies Ltd.,
where he discusses experimentations with all types of energy beams wherein they discovered
a way to “phase energy pulses”. The ship was fitted with a Mark 1 computer from the
Daystrom Institute with an L-12 targeting system for the new weapon.

The King in Prussia rushed to the Axanar system when the rapidly evolving situation pointed
to armed conflict. The ship was supposed to operate on its own, but Captain Garth, by force
of will, was able to press the King in Prussia to join Garth’s Axanar task force.

In the early moments of the second battle of Axanar, the King in Prussia suffered a
catastrophic failure in the experimental weapon system. The crew thought the ship had been
struck by enemy weapons fire but the real culprit was either the computer or the targeting
system. The explosive burn-out of the weapon system caused several injuries, one death,
and left the ship vulnerable to enemy weapons fire and boarding actions.

After the battle, the weapons test was deemed a failure and the ship was abandoned as a
total loss. The King in Prussia’s sister ship, the Margrave of Brandenburg conducted the
evacuation and attempted to destroy the ship and its records. The process was rushed as
Commodore Singh’s relief, repair, and salvage fleet quickly and efficiently descended on the
battle site.

*************
The two junior officers are back safe aboard the Pas-de-Calaise writing reports about their findings and the events around the death of their teammate. They learn that the Klingons had landed a capital ship on Axanar. With the defeat of the Klingon relief force, the ship was marooned. Commodore Singh has spend the past 24 hours negotiating the surrender of the planet side Klingons, towing the ship off the surface with a tractor beam, and processing hundreds of prisoners of war.
