Chapter 1E: Echoes of the Past

After Order 66, few Jedi dare to venture outside the shadows—rumors of the dark and terrible Darth Vader haunting even their waking moments. Yet, some Jedi find this life of fear unbearable. The Empire is always watching, and Vader himself is eager to confront any Jedi that might bring him closer to the whereabouts of his betrayer, Obi-Wan Kenobi.

The galaxy is in conflict. After years
of growing tension, the worlds of the
SEPARATIST ALLIANCE have seceded
from the GALACTIC REPUBLIC. Under
the leadership of the Jedi Knights,
clone troopers fight bravely against
the remorseless droid army.

Renouncing the JEDI ORDER, a former
padawan left Coruscant for her lover.
A few years later, he died as a casualty
of the Clone Wars. Obsessed with
restoring her lover, she seeks guidance
from witches of Dathomir where
MOTHER TALZIN instructs her to find
a crystal deep within the jungle.

After another unsuccessful journey
to find the crystal, she returns to the
coven's village to find the Nightsisters
massacred at the hands of GENERAL
GRIEVOUS's droid army. Now, lost
without the Clan Mother's guidance,
she continues her search for a chance...

Chapter 1E: Echoes of the Past

Post by Shurijo » Tue Oct 06, 2020 8:47 pm

The Nightsisters, also known as the Witches of Dathomir, were a clan and order of magick-wielding females who lived on Dathomir, a planet bathed in dark energies. These Dark side users were able to perform their arcane magicks by tapping into the magical ichor that flowed from the depths of their planet.

The mysteries of Nightsister magicks run deep. The Nightsisters hold a relatively small position on the galactic stage; their work on Dathomir is wild and hidden, mostly confined to that planet. The Nightsisters’ pact with death gives them other powers, too. Whether it is an application of the Force not seen elsewhere, an alchemical science, or an affinity with the dark life and strange properties of Dathomir itself.

The Nightsisters hang the bodies of their dead kin in pods suspended from the trees. With their enduring loyalty to one another, the fact that they keep the bodies could be seen as a sign of respect to the dead and a way to connect them to the forest in which they live. They also have a more violent use: These pods let dead sisters serve their kin in death. Magicks can raise them from death like zombies, turning them into a powerful force capable of standing up to droid soldiers.

After the loss of her love, Ashara Bi sought the galaxy for a way to resurrect, restore, or say her final goodbyes. Tannon, a young pollical idealist, happen to be at the wrong place at the wrong time when the Grand Army of the Republic assaulted the Separatist facility. There under diplomatic concerns, the young man's life became yet another needless casualty of the war as the facility crumbled under a barrage of missile strikes.

As she searched, she came across stories of powerful witches on Dathomir. Arriving on Dathomir, her request was denied and she was turned away by all of the clans. When one male Dathomiri slave told her to seek out the Nightsisters Sect. This clan was exiled, hid in the shadows, and opposed by all other clans.

Several months of searching finally lead her to the Nightsisters coven village. Mother Talzin agreed to her request and pressured her to join their cause. The Clan Mother told Ashara to retrieve a crystal within a cave as the first step. Then she could transfer her lover's essence into the crystal.

However, she would find this to not be an easy task. After months of searching, she could not find the crystal. Mother Talzin continued to inform her of the spell's requirements - "a crystal found in the belly of the beast." As she continued hunting, she began to feel a darkness growing.

"You must forget the ways of the Jedi. You will be loyal to no one but your sisters, and yourself." These words were often repeated to her by the Nightsisters upon her return to the village. There she would recover and mend her wounds and then head out again.

Several weeks ago, she returned to the coven's village to find a massacre. Hundreds of fallen Nightsisters littered the forest floor along with broken and damaged battle droids. The Separatist droid army had wiped out all of the Nightsisters. She searched for survivors, but found none.

Today, she sits alone in the forest beyond the Nightsisters' swamp as the world's perpetual red mist swirled around her. She prepares her daily meal as she contemplates the last year of events from the zenith of love and hope to the nadir of loss and despair. From her perspective, the galaxy-at-large and this uninviting world had not been kind to her. Her last hope was Mother Talzin's magicks, but now that was gone. Her obsession to reconcile with her lover had only lead to loneliness rather than the companionship she sought.

Ashara has been wondering what to do...what the future holds. Mother Tanzin has given few details about the next step of the ritual, but Ashara knows the FIRST step. She must find that special crystal...the vessel for Tannon's soul. After she gets that, she will find other places with the lore and knowledge she needs, be they Jedi archives or Sith holocrons buried from ages past. For now, she plots her next destination.

As she sits, a handful of moogs scutter by in a hurry. The moogs are small creatures indigenous to the planet Dathomir. They are known to be quite difficult to catch as they were both swift and fast moving animals. The creature has long ears and a fuzzy tail with a dull green and brown coat of fur. When they can be caught, they provide a gamey but pleasant meal.

easy difficulty
results: 1 success, 2 advantages

success = you hear it
advantages = it's in the distance

In the distance and coming in the direction the moogs are fleeing from, she hears the sound of trees being rustled. The sounds are becoming louder each moment.

The Togruta quickly looks for an appropriate place to hide from a predator. Preferably one that can afford her a field of view for sniping for cover. She knows the land well, and is naturally gifted at moving quietly.

Rampaging through the forest, two young belonuks appear. The creatures are dangerous predators with sharp claws and teeth and powerful, bony heads used for ramming prey. With their snouts raised, they smell something or someone... However, the pair quickly become distracted by Ashara's meal left at the ground before she moved to hide. After a brief moment, the two belonuks turn their heads at a sound... a sound of rustling leaves caused by Ashara's back foot as she attempts to conceal herself.
Stealth = 4 ability dice
Survival = assist/synergy = 1 boost
Difficulty = 2 difficulty (vs their perception/cunning)

results: 1 failure, 6 advantage

The check failed, but with the advantages the creature is distracted and you were able to gain the high ground (possibly up a tree or on top of a rock or whatever)

Combat init - since its not a surprise for either, cool checks
Ashara results: 2:success: • 2:advantage:
Belonuks results: 1:success

Ashara goes first
Everybody is in "short" range

** Now that I think of it, I'll can convert those advantages to setbacks on future opponents initiate/cool checks, that feels like a better way of implementing 'distracted' . Too late now, but Ashara goes first anyways so was moot point. **
Sensing her concealment failed, Ashara has the opportunity to make the first move...

Ashara curses silently as her foot rustles some leaves. With stealth no longer an option, she ready her ranged weapon. It is one she has trained with before, but never had one to call her own. Now, with the night sisters massacred, she was able to easily pick one up from the battlefield. Using her energy bow, the Togruta female carefully aims, and shoots at the lead belonuk!
Use a maneuver to AIM at the lead Belonuk for a boost. Quick Strike talent adds another boost to hit the flatfooted enemy. Shoot with Energy Bow.

Ashara take aim with her energy bow. Having the first strike, she releases the energy bolt towards one of the two young Belonuks. Her bolt hits her target and instantly incapacitates the creature.

Man: AIM +1 boost (blue)
Act: Attack,
bonus: +1 boost (blue) quick strike from opponent that hasn't acted yet
skill: ranged heavy = 1 proficiency (yellow) 3 ability (green)
range: short = 1 difficulty (purple)
defense: 0 armor = 0 setback

total: 1y 3g 2b 1p
results: 8 successes

pierce: 4
soak: 4 - 4 = 0
damage: 8 (base) + 8 (total successes) - 0 (soak) = 16 wounds
target's threshold: 7 wounds
damage exceeds threshold: defeated

Seeing the woman, the second Belonuk charges towards her. When it approaches, it's razor sharp claws strike out against her. The creature's claws tear through her clothing, but fails to land more than a scratch on Ashara. After it's somewhat weak strike, the creature falls back to disengaged from melee range.

maneuver: move from short to engaged
act: attack with claws
skill: brawl = 3 ability (green)
range: engaged melee = 2 difficulty (purple)
defense: 0 armor = 0 setback

total: 3g 2p
results: 1 success, 1 threat
damage: 3 (base) + 1 (total successes) - 2 (soak) = 2 wound
threat: Loses benefit of prior maneuver (Belonuk and you are now at short range, instead of engaged)

The Togruta grimaces a bit as the animal's claws rake her across her stomach. The claws take some of her cloth as well as some of her skin! Still...one down, one more to go. Seeing that the Belonuk fell back down, Ashara continues to use her energy bow. She aims, and she fires!
Use a maneuver to AIM at the lead Belonuk for a boost. Shoot with Energy Bow (4 pierce. Base 8 damage. If she crits, will use the crit to automatically kill the Belonuk, as any crit auto-defeats a minion.

Ashara fires a second energy bolt from the recently acquired Nightsisters' energy bow. At such close range, it might seem impossible to miss, but it's easy to miss with a large creature ready to pounce at any moment. However, her shot flies true and strikes the creature rendering it incapacitated.
Man: AIM +1 boost (blue)
Act: Attack
skill: ranged heavy = 1 proficiency (yellow) 3 ability (green)
range: short = 1 difficulty (purple)
defense: 0 armor = 0 setback

total: 1y 3g 1b 1p
results: 4 successes, 1 advantage

pierce: 4
unwieldly: 3, no penalty for agility
vicious: 2

soak: 4 - 4 = 0
damage: 8 (base) + 4 (total successes) - 0 (soak) = 12 wounds
advantage: 1, unspent
target's threshold: 7 wounds
damage exceeds threshold: defeated
