Chapter 5F: Opportunities

After Order 66, few Jedi dare to venture outside the shadows—rumors of the dark and terrible Darth Vader haunting even their waking moments. Yet, some Jedi find this life of fear unbearable. The Empire is always watching, and Vader himself is eager to confront any Jedi that might bring him closer to the whereabouts of his betrayer, Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Chapter 5F: Opportunities

The Phelar University was a modest education facility located on the Outer Rim world of Eriadu and primarily financed by the most prestigious Eriadu families. One of those families, the Tarkins, has been all over the local news with the recent promotion of Admiral Wilhuff Tarkin to Moff of the Greater Seswenna sector.

The academic and archeologist Jerek Aernen had spent the last couple of years at Phelar University conducting research. Some of the university's previously planned excursions were cut due to the Clone Wars. Now that the war had mostly ended, many of those opportunities represented themselves.

Eager to get back out into the field, Jerek browsed over the new format of the opportunities. To him, it appeared the various universities of the galaxy had finally been organized and oversaw by a common galactic director. He considers that made more sense to be organized since his family's excursions sometimes overlapped those of other universities which he always considered was inefficient where one team's resources could have been better used elsewhere.

Of the various opportunities, one of the higher priorities was a collection of items identified as the "Bogan Collection." The items were formerly contained within archives on Coruscant. The summary states Separatists looted the archive during their attack on Coruscant. Afterwards when the Jedi betrayed the Republic, they looted the remaining items in hopes of destroying them and removing their importance from history. The items were dated back to the eras of the High Republic and Old Republic.

Over a dozen artifacts were listed as a part of the collection and the incentives to recover them were way above what he had ever seen for an archeology expedition. Even recovery of a single item would raise the status of Phelar University to one of the most prestigious universities in the galaxy, and also result in a hefty monetary infusion which could revitalize the department and allow for future expeditions.

Another opportunity was an excursion to Yavin 4 to research and discover any artifacts left by the now-extinct Massassi. Jerek had read about the giant stone temples built by the Massassi, but he hadn't done more than just cursory reading about the species or the planet.

While it pertained more to the geologists, a few opportunities with large montary awards was new discoveries of kyber crystals and doonium veins.

Lastly, another opportunity caught his eyes. The summary stated that the Separatists had decimated a species on Dathomir resulting in the potential loss of their entire history. An excursion to the remote planet might allow for recover of artifacts to preserve their history.

Jarek looks over the opportunities and assesses his options. He vaguely knew that the Massassi were supposedly a large species, but he doesn't know exactly how large the grew. Most of what was easy to carry probably had already been looted. As much as he loved his ship, cargo space would be an issue. And if he did discover something worthwhile, he'd probably get a warm "well done" from the University right as they turn the reins over to a senior professor.

The doonium veins were outside his wheelhouse, as was mining khyber crystals. Plus, he'd be contending with teams of geologists and prospectors. However, the khyber crystals might be a lead on some ancient Jedi locations of importance, in which case he might be able to utilize the miners both to locate the sites, and maybe even buy artifacts off them for a song and dance. He makes a point of researching the records for reference of Jedi locations and seeing if any match the locations of the khyber crystals.

The Bogan Collection and Dathomir both interest the Mirialan greatly. Both represented cultures and knowledge that is at risk of being completely lost. With Dathomir, he had a planet he could start with. However, the item in the collection were now facing active destruction at the hands of terrorists. Either one would be dangerous in their own way.

Having thought it through, Jarek decides to take action. His first stop will be the university archive, to gather what research he can about the specific artifacts of the Bogan Collection and any records of Jedi lore pertaining to sites of purification/destruction. There are faster ships in the Galaxy, but the fact that he can access such a vast store of knowledge will more than make up time if he just hopped in his vessel and flew off planet. He'll also run that quick cross-reference of Jedi sites mentioned but not confirmed with the khyber crystal discoveries. In his head, he reviews the locations. Massassi. Dathomir. Items taken from Coruscant. Chances are, he'd probably be taken the Hydian Way for at least part of his journey.
Heading off to the archives for epic research montage action!

Jarek searches his universities archives for any records pertaining to the Bogan Collection. He finds no mention of the items on any easily accessible HoloNet archives. However, he finds a reference to the collection in a long forgotten book within the remote part of the university's physical library collection. In the book, it stated:

Code: Select all

The Bogan Collection was discovered during the High Republic
Era and moved to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. Notably, the
collection contained items from the "Sith Era", commonly
referred to as the Old Republic Era, such as (1) ancient
Sith scrolls and swords, (2) the lightsaber of Darth Krall,
a former member of the Jedi Order who became a powerful
Sith Lord, artifacts from Sith sorcerers of the groups
known as (3) the Sorcerers of Tund and (4) the Yacombe, and
(5) the helmet of the Sith Lord Darth Momin.
His research into the sites of the Jedi Order returned nothing. Nearly all traces of the Jedi Order had been purged from the HoloNet archives and his universities archives.

Lastly, kyber crystal sites research produced a list of known discoveries, but there were no traces of unconfirmed sightings. Some worlds such as the moon of Jedha, snow-covered planet Ilum, and the Outer Rim crystalline planet Christophsis.

Jarek smiles to himself as he discovers the blurb regarding the Bogan Collection. And that's why you do research! he triumphantly thinks to himself. Having discovered this bit of information, he decides to alter his search through the libraries, checking any available sources cited in the book where found the excerpt, as well retooling his efforts using the items mentioned as a jumping off point rather than his previous Jedi-centric approach.
Only now do see the full power of the upper level history electives!

underworld check

result 3 failure 4 adv

Jerek racks his brain and the archives for leads, but he quickly realizes that artifacts of this kind would mostly be handled on the black market in the seedier parts of the galaxy. With no leads into the underworld, Jerek realizes he could try to seek out someone with underworld contacts and/or access to underworld networks and black markets, head to Coruscant and investigate there, or continue his research at another location.

Jarek weighs the options in his head, trying to determine what his next move will be. He could go to another university of library to see if they have something in their archives, but even narrowing down to the premier institutions, this would still be a gamble if the data was stored there. Jarek decides his best course is to pursue black market contacts, to see if he can pick up leads. Luckily, Eriadu wasn't just a university, it was also an Outer Rim hub with no shortage of legal and illegal commerce. The Mirialan decides to leave campus and meet with some people in the city proper.

As Jarek made his way to Phelar city, he noticed construction of a new Imperial Junior Academy had began near the university. in a quick conversation, he learned that the junior officers would eventually head to the Imperial Academy in Eriadu City, if they were found promising. The small city of Phelar had little to no obvious signs of how to contact the underworld. Jarek could approach a cantina or shopkeeper and attempt to discover the whereabouts, but that could also lead to his detainment by the Imperial Army which had replaced the Grand Army of the Republic.
Eriadu City is probably your best bet on this planet. Phelar is a small town, not much obvious shady stuff at least to your knowledge.

Jarek looks at the new Imperial Academy being built. Hopefully, it will lead to more money and opportunity for the university. However, that would be years away. The Bogan Collection was the more pressing issue. The Mirialan hops in his ship hoping to meet up with some contacts in Eriadu City who can give him a leg up.

underworld = 3 greens
difficulty = ppp
result: 3 successes, 2 threats

This character is having the best dice rolls that I've seen.
Jarek hadn't dealt directly with the underworld of Eriadu City before, but it didn't take him long to find a lead. After being passed around, threatened, interrogated and accused of being some authority, he was told of a Devaronian named Gellar Roing. Roing was a minor player in the larger underworld of the Galaxy. All of his leads in Eriadu City ended at him, so he must have some influence over the general area. However, Jarek knew that the underworld of Phelar and Eriadu City was nearly non-existent and never spoken much about, so either they were very quite or without any known successes. He was told of a location and time, a shady cantina on the outskirts of the city and a late afternoon hour, of when he could meet with Gellar.

Jarek makes his way to the cantina, making sure to arrive about twenty minutes early to try to get a feel for the place and see if anyone looked out of place. He knew that he wasn't a hardened criminal, but a good eye for detail could still hopefully reveal a lot.
