I found a post on the L5R forums that gives a nice detail of combat and a duel. It might help out some. It cleared up a touch for me. The example given is for a high level samurai.

We can post combat rule questions here. I may also try and post some of the general rules. Who does not have a copy of the book? If everyone has a copy, or atleast a partial copy, I won't need to.
I suggest Reading the rules on combat, espcially Raises, Wounds, and What You Can Do (This all starts on page 165). Also read up on Raises in general (pg 159) and Void Points (pg 164)
Actually just start at the begining of the Book of Fire (157) and read that whole chapter
A note: Free Raises in Combat to gain more complete successes on actions (such as increasing dmg, etc) do not increase the TN, which is why they are "Free".
