Precious Cargo

The strange and deadly Eastlands are where wild elves rule. The fey have gone into hiding, or so it is said, and now only the mortal roam the Eastlands. Good and evil are of no concern. Only survival is important where death can come at any time and from any place.

Precious Cargo

Post by TetNak » Tue Apr 11, 2006 12:02 am

The spring day is brisk as the wind blows across the ocean and onto land. The sun is high and shines bright without a cloud in the sky. These are the days of spring are rare, as the weather at sea is treacherous, and only the most experienced and hardy dare to brave their waves during these months.

Standing upon the deck of the large merchant ship is Curgas Rumazza, the minotaur captain of this particular ship, and one high repute upon the seas. Typically trading in good is his business, year round, but there are times his ship privateers against known Grayscaler ships. The minotaur is average for his race, which is relatively huge, standing seven feet tall and weight seven hundred pounds. The creature is an imposing mass of muscle and hair.

Curgas' crew unloads and loads hundreds of crates to the local dock. Here the locals, a group of elves known as the Order of the Glorious Sun, import rare fabrics and export spices. This place, called the '˜Tail of the Dragon', is among Curgas' regular springs stops. Trading with the Sun Elves is easy and always profitable. There are never any problems that Curgas finds elsewhere and everyone always goes smoothly. The ship is typically only docked a few days as the loading and unloading process takes a decent amount of time to complete.

The minotaur usually leaves the negotiations up to an important lieutenant, Loranzar. Loranzar is a Wood Elf adapted to the sea. Although he is only a fair sailor the elf is a highly skilled speaker and fluent in many dialects used across the Eastlands. Loranzar might speak the terms and negotiate, but Curgas always must finalize the deal with his approval. Typically Loranzar knows what Curgas will say to different proposals and only has to bring the terms to the captain once.

Terms have already been decided with the Order of the Glorious sun at this docking point. They have been agreed to for years and have strictly been followed since the deal was struck almost ten years ago. Curgas is surprised to sea Loranzar walking along the deck toward him. The elf wears typical sailors' clothing, which are little more than rags, and goes barefoot like many other sailors.

He waves a hand to Curgas and addresses him informally, as only Curgas' lieutenants dare to do. In fact, many other sailors are not even permitted to address the captain unless it is an emergency. 'œI spoke to their Master Trader, Moglaztarlan, and he wishes to alter terms.' Loranzar shrugs, 'œThough, not with our normal shipment, instead he wishes to add cargo to only this voyage '¦'

Normally Loranzar would simply tell the minotaur that there would be added cargo and present the terms that have been negotiated, after all, this is instantly more profits unless the cargo is too much for the ship to carry. Why Loranzar has presented this in such a fashion is a mystery '¦

Welcome to the first Eastland Solo adventure! Only Shurijo should post here as the minotaur Curgas! Please feel free to ask me any questions you might have. Thanks!

Curgas Rumazza is standing on the bow looking over the railing of the ship, the Savage Horn. The previous captain had told Curgas that the name was a reference to a rather treacherous cape on the southern side of the archipelago called the Eastlands. That was the minotaur's name for it and the local name was unknown to the ship's crew. Curgas has never traveled that far south, and, in fact, he enjoyed the routine trade routes that he and his crew ran for the last several years.

Curgas wasn't always the captain of the Savage Horn. Actually, he began his sea life as a sailor on this very ship. As the years passed, he learned the trades and skills of a sailor and eventually became the captain's assistant. A few years ago, the ship was attacked by a raiding party of Grayscales pirates. It was a fierce battle with nearly half of the crew was killed. After the initial assault, he led a group of sailors across the boarding ramps onto the Grayscales vessel. There the Grayscales captain stood with a mighty and rather large great axe.

Some might call it luck, but Curgas was able to defeat the Grayscale captain on that day. With a powerful charge, the minotaur rushed the captain and knocked loose his axe and into the water below. Curgas picked up the great axe and began to slice the Grayscales in half. It was clear to him that this weapon was not of Grayscale quality or size. This weapon was designed for a minotaur and should have never fallen into the hands of a pirate. He and the others fended off the remaining Grayscale pirates and ultimately captured a few that did not wish to die.

He was the senior officer remaining on the Savage Horn and took control of the ship. Their crew was too shorthanded to navigate the pirate vessel back to shore, so they sank it where they were attacked. Once they reached land, they recruited more sailors and set out to continue their trade routes always keeping an eye open for pirates.

When Loranzar approaches, Curgas continues to peer out over the coastal waters. Once the elf stops near him, he turns with his hands resting upon the railing. He is unarmored today, preferring to feel the wind upon his fur, but still carries the large great axe across his back. His brow lowers in an inquiring way, as he looks down at his elven lieutenant. 'œLoranzar,' he bellows, 'œWhat dangers does the additional cargo carry?'
Let me know, if there's any lore/setting problems in the story above

The Wood Elf, Loranzar, shrugs, 'œI could not say.' He sighs, 'œThe cargo is actually a passenger. One of their priestesses.' The elf cannot help but smile, 'œSun Elves, their women, you have no idea.' Loranzar's head shakes, 'œHaving her onboard could cause a riot. Plus, I am not exactly sure why they do not just take her to the '˜Fang' themselves.'

The '˜Fang', or '˜Fangs of the Dragon', is the northwest part of the Dragon Isle and is typically the next stop for the Savage Horn. 'œThey are offering us five thousand gold '¦' he says, which would probably double the profitability of this stop entirely. 'œThey have to be desperate,' Loranzar says, 'œI figure they may want to get her there in secret or something. I could be dangerous. These '˜Enlightened' types have a lot of enemies.'
Looks good so far. BTW. Grayscalers are several different types of Lizardmen, etc, just in case you didn't know

Curgas turns and looks out over the waves for a few moments to consider the transport request. 'œThat sum would be welcomed by all,' he says with his back to the elf. He spins around to continue, 'œThis priestess would need to be hidden from the rest of the crew and continuously supervised. Get her aboard without incident and watch her, Loranzar. Select whomever of the crew that you need to get it done. I don't care if you nail her inside of a cargo hold, as long as she doesn't cause any trouble.'

The minotaur looks past the elf for a moment back to shore, then looks down and finishes, 'œIf she causes trouble, then I'm throwing you overboard.' The big furry captain chuckles a bit. The captain has threatened throwing lower ranking crewmembers overboard before, but he has yet needed to, except for that one time... When speaking to his lieutenant, his remarks can either be taken in jest or seriously.

Even after four years Loranzar has not gotten used to Curgas' humor, after all, four years is like a day in the life of an elf. 'œProbably last minute,' he says, 'œI heard the Lizard say we had at least another day of unloading and loading.'

'˜The Lizard' describes the Savage Horns first mate. He is, as one might expect, a Lizardman and former Grayscaler. Unlike Loranzar, '˜The Lizard' is an expert sailor that could only possibly be matched by Curgas himself. Supposedly his time as a Grayscaler was short, but there are little details, and although distrusted by some he has killed many of his kinsmen in the presence of his captain and showed no mercy. His usefulness is certainly greater than any other crewman on the ship. Unfortunately no one can pronounce his name, so is typically called Lizard, or Liz, or some other variation.

*** Later that Night ***

Liz pounds on Curgas' door violently as he usually does. If there is one creature on this ship with almost as poor tact as the minotaur, it is Liz. 'œAre you sssleeping in there?'

*** Thud ***

*** Thud ***

'œDrunk again?' the Lizard's voice asks, then a strange laughter following it. 'œI have the nightly reportsss.'

Curgas rolls over and sits up on the edge of his bed. 'œLizard, how many times did I tell you '¦' his voice trails off as curses and unknown noises come jumbled together from inside of the room.

The minotaur opens the door and looks directly into the eyes of the lizard. The captain simply commands, 'œReport.'

The Lizard is either insane or extremely confident. He looks up at the gigantic minotaur and shows a huge, sharp toothed grin. 'œYou are naked again,' the Lizard says, knowing full well the minotaur is always '˜naked'. 'œWhat did I tell you about that?' Curgas and other minotaurs lack a great sense of humor, and would rather pound a creature's head into their waist instead of joking about.

'œHere!' The Lizard lifts a bottle from his side, one that is full of golden liquid, and Curgas instantly knows what it is. This is the '˜Sacred Wine' of the Sun Elves. They often use it to aid in their trances and communion with the Sun, but what it really boils down to is some hardcore alcohol. Curgas pays at least five hundred gold a bottle for the stuff, as it is not sold to any outside the Order of the Glorious Sun, and getting a bottle is always difficult.

'œI struck a deal with someone. Only two hundred. Do not worry, I already took out the money from the common treasury.'

Curgas does not laugh at Lizard's joke. He never laughs at that joke. He just responds, 'œAnd you are hairless.'

He grabs the bottle of '˜Sacred Wine' and asks, 'œWho is on guard duty of the treasury?' The gruff minotaur turns and walks away from the door towards the back wall of his cabin. He places the bottle on a desk within his room and mutters low, 'œI'll throw him overboard in the morning.'

The captain then turns back to the door and returns to it. Leaning on the door frame, he asks, 'œHow fares the night watch?'
Are we at sea or still at the dock?

'œLoranzar,' answers the lizardman, stepping into the large doorway and leaning against the doorframe. The answer is obviously ridiculous consider Loranzar is never tasked with guarding the treasury, which happens to be a certain, quarantined, part of the hold.

Liz gets serious, as much as he can, and answers the captain. 'œThey are fine. We are probably in the sssafest place in all the Eassstlandsss. Who is crazy enough to do anything to the Sssun Elves? People who are crazy, thatsss who. And they are usssally ssstupid.'

'œI heard we might take on a passsenger?' he asks, probably getting the information from Loranzar.

Curgas menacingly eyes the lizard, 'œJust more cargo, Lizard. Nothing to get worked up about.' The captain stands back up from leaning on the door frame and grabs the edge of the door in his hand.

As the door begins to close, the minotaur comments, 'œMake sure the crew makes it back tonight. We don't want to upset our paying clients'¦' as the door closes, he continues, 'œwho have such sacred drinks.'

Before heading back to sleep, the minotaur stows the bottle away in a secure chest for a later date. Even thou, the captain can almost taste the wine through the bottle, he has learned from his previous captain to force himself to stay sober in a paying clients port '€" at least long enough to make it back to sea or a general port.
