The Lost and Found - Chapter 10

Post by Vardaen » Thu Jun 18, 2009 5:56 pm

Here begins Chapter 10 of the Mahasarpa: Ascension campaign. Following the group of heroes known as the Harbingers from Mahasarpa to Zakhara we have come to a tragic time in their history. Rhokti, the Hengeyokai Mantrika, companion and friend to all, fell in battle with the Bhut of a woman known as Mabruk (the ghostly form of Kasub Ubadha bin Bassim Reehan from the Zakhara game). The heroes traveled from the shores of Lakshama via ship to the port of Medina al-Afyal on the Isle of the Elephant, a large island 'nation' that mixes the cultures of Zakhara and Mahasarpa sometimes in bloody religion assassinations. The group battled a great sea dragon turtle on the ship ride, but other wise enjoyed some down time while on the ship. They arrived to find a mix of home and alien culture awaiting them as they chased Anoop Daruka, the brother of Toranoshi, and agent of Saurama!

Navigating their way around the foriegn city the Harbingers eventually sought out the advise and help of a Barber known as Babazayd the Boisterous. The man however was working with Anoop (against his will it would later come to be known) and he sprung a trap on the heroes creating a duplicate of the Yogi Janak. This duplicate killed Rhokti before it was in turn killed by the real Janak. During the fight a group of woman known as the White Scarves, or Moon-spinners, appeared and battled against the Harbingers. These Holy Slayers were not working with the Barber and his begger troups but were allied with Anoop none the less. Later in the fight another joined the battle, it was the Bhut of Mabruk and so the group fled. Badly wounded, and one friend down and several of them suffering detrimental effects from various spells they Harbingers retreated finally with Rhokti's body in tow.

Fleeing back to their caravanserai they plotted their next move, and Toranoshi went into the city to see a friendly mosque where they could get healing for themselves, and see about prayers powerful enough to return Rhokti from the dead. Toranoshi learned that the Holy Slayers were among the worshipers of Selan the Beautiful Moon, and for centuries Selan's followers had been removing all other relgious groups on the Isle, the Imams of Selan would be of no use to the Harbingers.

Eventually a message arrived from the very barber that tried to kill them, cryptic and vauge it suggested a meeting, which the group agreed to with little other options to go on. So the meeting was set and the group arrived and learned that Babazayd the Boisterous was under the powerful effects of a Oathbinder Genie, his life, and the life of his wife and children hung in the balance of his 'loyalty' to Anoop. He did, through an intermediary, help the Harbingers by suggesting where Rhokti might find the help he needs to return from the realms of the dead -- the Cult of the Elephant. A group of Mahasarpans who remain in hiding deep in the jungles of Afyal who worship The Lost One, an Elephant Deva that was banished from Mahasarpa during the war against Saurama. The group has promised to aid the barber against the Oathbinder Genie once they return with Rhokti alive once again. On their way out of the meeting the Bhut of Samakar, a man that was seen throughout many of their early travels, appeared and began causing havok, but the group choose not to battle him.

So leaving the city of Medina al-Afyal the group encountered a third Bhut, this time of Narmada, the traitorous healer woman from Pequot that murdered Kalyani and her two children. This time the Bhut took possession of Toranoshi and the heroes were forced to nearly kill him inorder to eject the ghost from his body. Shamad and Sujata nearly died as well, but eventually Narmada's Bhut was destroyed just outside the Gates of the Elephant's Tusk.

Fleeing into the jungle to avoid the Mamluk's the city, the group, alive (save for Rhokti) but wounded limped off into the wilds...

*** Isle of the Elephant, Karttika the 6th, Year 1096 ***

Ghanji leads the way through the jungle of the island, a jungle that is much like that of the Mahavana. With Shamad, Sujata, Janak and the corpse of Rhokti in tow the Shikari has set a strong pace away from the city of Medina al-Afyal, and as a result the Mamluk's of the city have been completely avoided. Its been many hours now since leaving the city, and the day is starting to grow later and later.

Having traveled through rough jungle for a bit, the group has finally appeared on a game trail through the jungle. The trail is wide, and easily followed for it was made by elephants, and the large beasts while suprisingly nimble, still leave quite a path to follow. The group pauses a moment where a small patch of wild flowers grows right in the center of the trail, not a single flower stomped on or disturbed by the elephants that made this trail. Not far ahead, the trail that moves mostly southwards veres to the west to avoid a lumberjack camp that Ghanji has already scouted once (a score of men work the camp).

Pausing for a drink, and to set down the coffin of Rhokti, the group talks of their next move. The coffin that holds Rhokti used to be on a cart, but that cart was left behind miles and miles ago as it simply was slowing things down here in the jungle. Toranoshi and Janak have been bearing the weight of it on this leg of the trip.
Welcome to Chapter 10!!! Wow, 10 chapters! Some folks managed to level up after the short Chapter 9, others didn't but the group is now basically all on par with one another. Please get me your sheets ASAP if you haven't, I will use old stats if a fight happens and you haven't given me the sheet yet.

This chapter's goal should be to get Rhokti back to life!

Sujata puts down her items while she takes a sip of water. She is tired and sore, still down from her normal strength. She takes a moment to sit and lean against a tree while the group is stopped.

"Hopefully we shall catch up with some of these elephants shortly." She speaks the obvious, more in an attempt to fill silence than anything else.

"I certainly hope so," Janak adds, sitting on a high tree root. "Tomorrow I'll make the coffin smaller and out of a lighter wood. I hadn't realized when I made it this morning that we'd need to carry it." He too takes a deep drink of water.

Shamad drinks from his waterskin, looking at Janak. "Hopefully, by tomorrow, Rhotki will have been returned to us." He takes another drink and stows the thing away again. "We cannot wait too long. We need to find this Lost One, and rid ourselves of the Bhuts, if we are attacked again, we may not survive."

Ghanji says nothing. Again, he drops Sujata's pack when everyone pauses and then moves off ahead of the group to scout while they rest. He doesn't share Shamad's expectation of a quick resolution. He is a hunter, and he knows that Elephant hunts frequently take weeks to complete, even when they are not the magical beasts that the Elephants of this island are rumored to be.

Toranoshi drinks last, nodding to his master's urgency. He understands the weakness of his compatriots - and himself - all too well.

Ghanji slips off to scout further into the jungle as the group pauses a moment to drink water and rest. A short time later the Shikari has returned, the trail continues on, its days old he can tell, and his suspicions are probably correct, this could take days.

The group collects themselves again and head off once more after the break. The travel through the jungle isn't that difficult, but soon you begin to notice some differences between this jungle and one at home. The first is the smell of the salt air from the shores to the west and far east. The second is the lack of biting insects like at home, perhaps this is because there is no swamp forming in the middle of this jungle like around the ruins of Mahanaga. Whatever the reason its a small victory for the group and it makes the trip with the heavy coffin bearable. To keep the pace up the group is forced to trade off the duty of carrying Rhokti. You travel along the one trail for the entire day before it eventually becomes night, and you are forced to stop for the night. Your camp routine is work out well, and each person moves to their duties, fetching water, getting a fire going, cooking, setting watches, its something that you have done enough times together that its second nature. The night passes without encounter, and without sign of any of these mystic elephants yet.

Morning arrive, and everyone is feeling a bit better after the rest, muscles are sore still of course, but you feel like you can manage another day in the jungle.
You may consider the Teamwork Beni: Camp Routine for this group!

I'll do healing for resting later, but you are all refreshed, please note spells, and cast any further healing etc when morning arrives...

If you wanted to cast anything before sleeping just note that too.

Ghanji wakes and winces at the dew which has formed on his body and the stiffness of his muscles. He used to like sleeping under the sky, but months traveling with Rhokti, onboard ship, and in the caravanseri have gotten him used to having a bed. Still, he works the kinks out quickly, and if off scouting the way again before many of the others have arisen.
Why would we do that? We usually bring a house with us.

No need for sleeping under the sky when you have a shaper with you!
When they stop for the night, Janak takes a little bit of time to provide supplies for them. A few minutes of concentration and they have a nice airy tent and some simple camp furniture - a few benches and a table and some basic wood and canvas cots. "Not as sturdy as a proper house," he says when it's done. "But in the jungle it's likely to be a lot more comfortable."

After that, he helps out as best he can with the camp chores. And right before going to sleep, he concentrates once more, making a new coffin and shroud for Rhokti, the old ones being set to disappear during the night.
Since all this comes right before resting for the night (and getting back his PPs), he might as well go whole hog in making the camp nice. Also, if he Extends the Minor Creation for the coffin, it'll last 22 hours. He can do that right before turning in and it should last until we make camp the next day.

And this coffin will be smaller and lighter. Oh yea, and it'll have handles in all the places Janak wished there had been handles when he was carrying it.

Shamad wakes and stretches. His body is sore from Toranoshi's beating. He attempts to push the thoughts out of his mind and prepare himself for another day of travel through the jungle. "Let us eat quickly and get moving," he says, pulling out some rations from his pack and preparing to eat quickly so that they might push forward.
