A Fray Among the Fungus

Post by Eanwulf » Wed Jul 04, 2007 9:44 pm

It was the elf Faldrin who calmly took aim and shot another arrow while his companions busily prepared themselves for battle.
Due to distance and actions required, Ariah and Faldrin will get to shoot while the rest of you are each closing in to advance, maneuvering to a better position, etc.

[Faldrin's ranged attack, DC 8, d20 + 8 = 21, Success!]
[Faldrin's damage roll, d8 = 7 points.]
His shot was a success! The wounded toadstool emitted one final shriek before falling over limp and lifeless. A murky, semi-congealed ichor seeped about the fungi's wounds.

Ariah had no sooner drawn his bow and began to nock an arrow before Faldrin's arrow whizzed by his head. 'Good shot Faldrin,' the young lowlander exclaimed, 'œI pray the Sovereign will guide my aim and allow mine to be equally as lethal.'
[Ariah's ranged attack, DC 8, d20 + 1 = 10, Success!]
[Ariah's damage roll, d6 + 3 = 7 points.]
A modest smile crept across Ariah's face. His shot had also found its mark. The wounded toadstool wailed even louder as its trunk was pierced by the shaper's arrow.

The group stared in awe as the tentacled-toadstool began to uproot itself, a series of ropy root-like appendages serving crudely as its feet. With its ropy tendrils still flailing about wildly, the violet colored fungus began to slowly advance down the passage.
Should be a short combat. Actions please.

Looking with satisfaction at the dead shrieker, Faldrin turned his attention to the violet fungus. The sound was annoying, but poison was dangerous. Once more he let fly with an arrow, but this time aimed at the violet fungus, even now approaching Kharn on hideous, ropey legs.

Once Solia has managed to draw one of her throwing daggers from the bandoleer that hung across her chest, she takes careful aim while advancing towards the flailing fungal menace.

A Fray Among the Fungus - Gronn

Post by Tesseract » Mon Jul 09, 2007 3:42 pm

Gronn moves his hands in arcane patterns and speaks arcane words of power. A glowing missile springs from his fingers and travels quickly across the cavern to slam into the advancing fungus.
Casting magic missile damage: 1d4+1.

Though a grizzled veteran and certainly no stranger to combat, Goren chose to heed Faldrin's words and keep his distance for now.
Kharn is out of town until Wednesday but did tell me of his actions. I will post accordingly.

A Fray Among the Fungus - Round 1

Post by Eanwulf » Tue Jul 10, 2007 8:36 pm

No sooner than the fungus had detached itself and began to creep its way towards the party than Faldrin had managed to successfully nock and fire yet another arrow at it.
[Faldrin's ranged attack roll, DC 13, d20 + 8 = 26, Success!]
[Faldrin's damage roll, d8 = 5 points.]
The violet colored fungus emitted a piercing wail of its own as the arrow struck it. The creature's ropy tendrils flailed about even more frantic than they did before. Desperately trying to find something to grab, the fungus' appendages began to elongate themselves '€" terminating at a length of nearly ten feet.

Seeing this, Solia's eyes widened in fear and the young saltblood quickly halted her advance. Drawing forth one of her throwing daggers, she paused for only a few moments before tossing it at the writhing creature.
-2 attack penalty due to range.

[Solia's ranged attack roll, DC 13, d20 + 3 = 18, Success!]
[Faldrin's damage roll, d4 + 2 = 3 points.]
Though the rogue's dagger struck the fungus' head soundly, the beast still continued with its advance.

Realizing that the fungus could very well engage his companions in melee, Gronn quickly took a step forward and began gesturing with his hands. With the utterance of a single word, a single missile of glowing arcane energy darted forth from his fingertips and struck the fungus solidly in its central trunk.
[Gronn's magic missile damage roll, d4 + 1 = 3 points.]
Though Goren was eager on aiding his companions in the fray, he finally opted to rein the party's mounts in beside him '€" shielding them from any potential harm.

Ariah recited a quick prayer to himself before taking aim and firing an arrow of his own at the still living beast.

'His guidance is the path to wisdom, and by His grace our path is true.'
[Ariah's ranged attack, DC 13, d20 + 0 = Natural 20, Success!]
[Ariah's Critical threat roll, DC 13, d20 + 0 = 9, Failure.]
[Faldrin's damage roll, d6 + 3 = 8 points.]
The young lowlander's arrow found its mark, passing clean through the flailing fungus. Within moments the odd creature had fallen over to one side, its appendages falling about it limp and lifeless.

Kharn, displeased with how quickly the writhing fungus was bested in combat, chose to vent his frustrations upon the one remaining fungus. Determined to put an end to the creature's annoying wailing, the hulking warrior swung his heavy maul with all his might.
[Kharn's melee attack roll, DC 8, d20 + 4 = 13, Success!]
[Kharn's damage roll, d10 + 10 = 17 points.]
With a resound '˜whomp' Kharn had managed to land his blow, tiny bits and fragments of the fungus splashing about the cavern floor.

Finally, the cavern had returned to normal. Other than the sounds of rushing water to the south, the cavern remained quiet.
Quick Pause for replies.

Kharn shakes his head and snorts gruffly as he admires his maul's handiwork. Feeling much better after having vented his frustrations out on the shrieking fungus, Kharn snorts one last time before triumphantly trudging back to his group. Once there he removes what fungal remains still cling to the head of his maul and calmly awaits his party's next move.

Solia quickly retrieves her throwing dagger and wipes the slimy ichor off on her pants leg. With a slightly disgusted look upon her face she comments, 'œDamned things, my ears are still ringing with that god-awful sound! I so hope that we don't run into any more of those foul creatures.' Once done cleaning her dagger she then sheathes it and takes her place alongside her companions.
If you want me to I can scout the southeast passage for any more of those things.

"We should be safe," Faldrin replied. "That shrieking should have called any possible trouble to us. If we don't get attacked in the next few moments, I doubt there's anything threatening nearby." He moves over and taps one of the dead mushroom creatures with his boot. "Thankfully these are neither particularly dangerous creatures. They rely more on surprise than anything. By turning things around on them, we deprived them of their greatest weapon."

Nearing the End

Post by Eanwulf » Sat Jul 14, 2007 10:15 pm

The group decided to heed Faldrin's advice and waited several minutes before pressing onward. Once satisfied that they were indeed in no further danger of an attack, the group chose to explore the overgrown passage to the southeast. A quick scan of the tunnel by Solia yielded no immediate signs of peril. Therefore once Goren had concluded with his survey of the cavern, the group proceeded to travel down the passageway.

The tunnel itself remained a steady width of no more than 15 feet as it twisted and winded its way roughly 100 feet or so southward; exiting outside unto a rocky shore. The mists of the mighty Torvun River sprayed upon the party members as emerged from the cavern mouth. The band of adventurers stood upon numerous pebbles and rocks that comprised the rocky shore; each stone rounded and smoothed by the river's powerful currents.

Each party member marveled at their majestic surroundings. The thawing snows of the Skyhome Mountains had made the mighty Torvun River fat and swollen and its cold, fresh waters spilled up over unto the shore. The group stood in awe in roughly six inches of cold water, a depth that remained constant even some 40 feet or more inside the cavern tunnel itself. The water deepened the closer one got towards the shoreline some 30 feet away, to a maximum depth of nearly two feet. Beyond this lay the tumultuous rapids of the Torvun itself.

Breathing a sigh of peaceful content, the group admired their view for a few more moments before pressing onward.

Sorry for the edit, but my initial post was simply crap heh.

Well, this is it. You have pretty much reached the end of this adventure. I will pause for your actions and/or end-game wrap-ups and what not before posting my own wrap up, xp awards, and other information. Until then'¦
