Chapter 2 - Gathering of Storms

Post by Vardaen » Sun Apr 02, 2006 12:14 am

Here begins chapter two of the Wang Guo campaign. Chapter one saw our heros gather at the Avalanche Covers the Night Monastery. Gathered together they discovered that Chen-wei is one of the princes of old Tu Qinq, and the various heros pledged their loyalty or advisory to him. All desire to see the armies of Wang Guo removed from their beloved land. However they would not get a chance to enjoy the revelation, as an army marched up the moutain toward the monastery intent on exterminating any resistance to the Throne of Wang Guo.

Master Foo and Master Bhar lead the group to a secert passage out of the monastery and down the backside of the mountain. Scrambling for their lives the quartet fled into long abondoned tunnels and caves fighting past dangers and strange creatures. Exiting the tunnels by following an underground river they emerged into a secret vale. Climbing down centuries old stairs they discovered a hidden temple with blatant warnings of danger but went inside anyhow.

They soon found themselves fighting shadows, and nearlying loosing their lives as Chao's strength was sapped from him nearly totally. Exhausted they passed out in the darkness for what would eventually turn out to be several days. Exploring the rest of the complex they found ancient scrolls detailing the place as some prison. Pressing forward, because the way behind was sealed, they faced off against strange gray skilled creatures that they would find out are Shadar-Kai, the Shadow Fey. Prisoners escaped and gone mad by centuries of imprisonment and magical stasis only recently released by their actions.

One of these tattoed white haired 'men' was sane, and brokered a deal for escape, and since Wu Ming was lost in the fighting already, the trio agreed, with no real other option. A Shadow Stone was found, and Fanhg the Shadar-Kai provided and escape through the Realm of Shadows. We continue now as the group arrives at its new distination...

Fanhg gives the orders to the men that stand behind him, and one by one they grab hold of the man in front of them, holding tight. The Shadar-Kai places his hands on either side of the pitch black orb and closes his eyes. He lowers his head, his forehead touching the orb as the water around the group begins to swirl in the pools like some vortex of shadows. The room becomes pitch black, snuffing out the light of Lu Zhou's everburning torch. You are plunged into shadow, raw, tangible shadow.

There is a sudden rushing sound and feeling, as if the group was suddenly snaking its way through some tunnel filled with liquid shadow. The rushing flow of shadows sweeps over everyone tugging and pulling on each of you threatening to drag you off into the utter dark that engulfs you. Fangh stears his way through the shadows for what seems like hours. There is a a scream, a faint cry that rings out behind you, and the drag and pull on the group seems to lighten slightly.

An explosion errupts behind you and everyone is thrown to the floor in a jumbled tumbled mess of bodies and gear. Soaking wet, dripping with a black oily substance, each of you gasps for air like a man that has been held under water for too long. Your lung burn, and your body aches from the strain of what you have just gone through.

All is dark around you, but not the same utter black. Slowly a bobbing red light seems to draw closer as your vision returns and you get your bearing.

Fahng coughs, seeming slightly less affected by his trip through the shadow realm, but only slightly. It may be only ruse, however. The Physical symptoms seem less than for the humans, but his eyes have taken on the wild look of his bretheren that attacked. Fortunatly, it's too dark for the humans to see it.

He speaks, whispering in the darkness. "Someone is coming, and we lost one in the darkness. Be ready if you would hold to your word."

The bobbing light in the tunnel suddenly moves slower, and then finally comes to a stop. It is still too far away to make out who it is that holds the source of light.

...now that was a creepy feeling...and that sound...something...

The light suddenly begins to move again, though in the opposite direction, and quite a bit faster.

Lu Zhou is completely discombobulated from the trip through the shadow. He immediately sucks in a giant breath of air and reaches toward his face, scraping the black substance from around his eyes and flips both hands toward the ground, and in the process flinging the oily substance to the ground. He hears the words, 'œLost one,' just as his eyes begin to regain focus, frantically looking around to see who they have lost, attempting to find Chen-Wei. 'œWho did we lose?' he asks, spitting afterward, as the taste of the crud they have been covered with attacks his tongue as he speaks. 'œChen-Wei? Are you here?' Lu Zhou finally spots the light approaching, but does not wait, reaching toward his own pack and pulling forth his Everburning torch. His opposite hand immediately goes for the straight blade at his side, preparing to defend himself.

When the light comes, Fahng is briefly nowhere to be seen, the shadows seem ill-inclined to leave him, but the light banishes them and he's there, in plain view and seeming to recover faster than the others. He seems displeased at the addition of light, but doesn't comment... humans need such things, and unlike many Fey, Fahng seems to appreciate the fear of being blind. "The one at the end." He says unnecessarily, as the Prince is also clearly in view. "I suppose he didn't hold on tightly enough."

Chen-Wei is laying on the ground, covered in the oily shadows as well. He rolls to his back and sits up, coughing out the goop that got into his mouth and nose. "I'm here Lu Zhou...but Chao?" The prince stands as the light fills the chamber, and the other nearing light turns and heads the other way. "Chao!?!" He starts to shout louder, his voice echoing down the tunnel. The prince looks like a child who has lost a puppy as he scampers around the chamber looking around behind the fountain that mirrors that of the one you were just at. In fact the chamber as a whole looks identical to the other one you just left. There are two major differences, this one seems much much more damaged. Roots stick through the ceiling, and dirt and moss covers the floor, and the fountain isn't bubbling. Atop the still stagnate water rests a cracked and broken black sphere, where oily shadow leaks from several wounds in the sphere's side. "Chao!" Chen-Wei shouts again and searches the chamber, the Princes childhood friend is indeed gone.
Aramil has vanished, and so has Chao.

The light in the corridor that is suddenly moving away is moving quite a bit faster. And so after a moment it is quite clearly seen how the light hits the ground and a shadow is suddenly moving upwards against a wall.

Once up Li looks around and whistles for his dog. The bow is drawn from his back and so he moves into the deeper shadows, nocking an arrow and awaiting to hear or see something in the hole he earlier was struggling to open up.

The rope is left hanging down the hole, allowing whoever it is to climb up and show themselves.

Lu Zhou takes a few labored breaths and frowns, 'œI am sorry Chen-Wei,' he says, now understanding who was '˜lost'. 'œHe was a brave warrior and a staunch friend to you and your cause. And thus I mourn his loss.' He turns, looking toward the light, and speaks again in the Ancient tongue. 'œWe must prepare. I am sorry Chen-Wei. We have no further time to mourn currently. We will have to save the stories of our friend until later '¦'

The shadow fey looks with interest at the retreating light. "That was no guard. This place is empty and abandoned... and more important, there is an exit. Take heart, Prince... at least you will not have to help me fight my way free. Your debt is paid." Having watched his people go mad and be butchered by these people, he has little enough emotion for having lost one into the shadow realm. He tips his head, looking at the distant light on the ground. "I will clear the way." And he walks off in the direction of the light without another word.

Fangh moves down the tunnel toward the retreating light. He travels through a stone hall that is much like the one from where you just arrived from, but this is in far worse shape. Moss, mushrooms, roots, and vines choke the walls, meaning that the hall eventually ends in the outside world. The Shadar-Kai slips down the passage for a few moments, and arrives in a small chamber, broken and crumbled, where a hole in the ceiling exposes the night sky above, and a flicking red light of a torch above. A rope dangels down the hole.

Chen-Wei collects himself, and stands tall. "Chao was a good friend, and a loyal man. I will miss him greatly, and his sacrifice for me will not go waisted. Come. Let us keep an eye on our new friend." The prince begins to move down the tunnel some ways behind Fangh.
