The Quick Stop

Post by TetNak » Tue Apr 10, 2007 6:56 am

The Quick Stop ... what a piece of shit.

Located in Hollywood, the small gas station does what it does, runs off smokes, a bit of gas sales, and condoms. Oh well, it's better than some other shitholes.

Marcus Orin walks into the store at 10:55 PM, his shift staring in five minutes. He hates this job. He likes the scenery sometimes. You see all kinds of crazy shit on the graveyard shift here at the Quick Stop. Marcus once saw someone get beat to death, literally, out in the parking lot. Some dickhead bashed a dude's head into the gas pump about ten times until his head was mush.

Greg looks over the counter at Marcus, eyes red from the weed he's been smoking since hours before he got into work. Greg was a piece of shit, too, and sells dime-bags out of the Quick Stop. Whatever ...

Marcus makes his way into the shop, his black pants and blood red shirt a tell tail sign of the lowly employ at this wonderful place called paradise. Tossing his beaten denim jacket under the counter he gives Greg a look over, 'œGo on, get out of here, Ill punch out for you.' It's not to be nice, it's just worth breaking the rules to get five minutes less with Captain Herbal-Life. Marcus then hits the last sail on pulls the register tray for Greg and hands it over, unlocking and sliding his tray into the slot and resetting the machine. 'œJust take the trash on your way out.'

Greg shrugs, "Okay, man," he says, like a typical stoner. It is funny how stereotypes are, usually they are true. Greg throws back his head, swinging his dreadlocks as he does so, then grabs the garbage bag out of the can and hauls it into the back of the store. After a few minutes, he returns, his natural 'hemp' backpack on his back. He throws Marcus a waves as he heads out the door.

Hours pass of pure boredom. Less and less people come into the Quick Stop as the hours go by.

*** 1:48 AM ***

Into the Quick Stop walks a large fellow with a thick beard and wearing leather. He looks like a biker, from what Marcus can tell. He slowly walks up to the counter. "Hey, twenty on pump five, pack of Marlboro Reds, and .. yeah, that's it ..."

Glad to be rid of the stoner Marcus goes about his normal routine of cleaning only the minimum and staying active enough not to fall asleep, mostly just reading the magazines. With the biker Marcus gives him a once over as someone of interest but hopefully not someone to rob the place. Marcus hands over the smokes and takes payment then hits up the pump for $20. 'œAnything else?'

"Nope," the biker says, pulling out his wallet, and tossing twenty-four thirty three on the counter. "Thanks man," he follows, seeming an okay sort, actually. He starts to turn, then Greg hears the door open, as the little bell chimes.

"Hey, Morgan, how ya doing, buddy?" The words drip with sarcasm as three other men walk into the shop. They are the rough types, dressed in ripped jeans and thick jean jackets. They all have wild and unruly hair, a strange look to them, as they stare menacingly at the biker.

The biker actually give Marcus a short look, then looks back at the men. "Hey. Want to go outside and talk?"

Seeing what is clearly likely to degenerate into a fight, Marcus stays near the register with his hands ready to hit the panic alarm. There is no guarantee the management has paid up on their service but it's the best bet to call the cops if things go wrong. It's times like this that Marcus takes the time to reconsider saving up enough money to buy a gun.

Marcus is ignored, for now, at the very least.

"Hey, Morgan, go fuck yourself. How is that for an answer?"

The three men laugh as the same one does the talking. "Why should we do you any fucking favors, eh?"

Suddenly, Marcus is not ignored, and that is a problem. One of the trio, the man talking, shoots Marcus a look. "I ain't worried about no fucking clerk. Who cares, Morgan? Why would we give your kind a break?"

Marcus moves his hands in front of him in a non threatening posture, "I'm not even here." he offers with a shake of his head. It's best if these things can go down outside the shop. Somehow cleaning up blood and teeth is his job when beatings take place and that's always enough to make a bad night worse.

Morgan, the biker, quickly pulls back his leather jacket and jerks out a pistol. Things look like they are more serious than a couple broken teeth. "You dogs better get the hell out of here," he warns.

The three others do not seem to have any weapons, but they seem dangerous nevertheless. "You might get one of us ...." the talker says, "But we're going to end you right here ..."

Marcus seems to be forgotten about again for the moment.

With the attention brought away from him, Marcus brings his hands back down and pushes the button under the counter. A silent alarm that may or may not be hooked up but is the only hope to end this before blood goes all over the hot dog machine and Marcus is forced to change the blueberry to cherry on the slushy machine.
