Durnalia

Post by Palamon » Fri Oct 01, 2004 2:13 am

Durnalia is the largest, most powerful kingdom in a land that is very Mediterranean in geography. Durnalia has an extensive shoreline with a wide variety of geographical features due to itslarge physical size. Its boundaries are the Green Mountains to the west, the Middle Sea to the south, the White Mountains to the north, and the Placid River to the east.

West of the Green Mountains is the land known as Tarindal, once a part of the Durnalian Empire but now an independent kingdom.

The Placid River begins with countless tributaries in the mountains, snaking from mountains to hills to grass to marsh to the sea. There are many smaller rivers, but none so important as this one. On the western side of this river is the city of Estria, which controls traffic into and out of the river. Estria is considered the easternmost Durnalian city.

Further east of Estria is the Ashkarian Desert, which expands south for hundreds of miles, and east for easily a thousand. Ashkar was a civilization of old that is now lost to all but memory and a few artifacts, scrolls, and ruins.

The capital, Editia, is known as the City of a Thousand Towers. Durnalians are very proud people who build bigger, and grander, every year. Nobles who have homes in the city build their own towers, there are towers on the walls, towers everywhere. The city is hilly, and the loftiest of these hills is, of course, home to the king. His castle has a tower that soars over seven hundred feet in height, by far the tallest tower in the world. This legendary Grey Tower is actually a remnant from the days of Ashkar when a few Ashkarian dissidents fled the civilization and began to build their own cities.

Travelling from Durnalia to the Southern Shores of the Middle Sea can be accomplished in three ways: the Serpent Road through rocky and hilly terrain, crossing the Middle Sea, or travelling the Ashkarian Desert. Few opt for the last option.

The architecture of Durnalia is Roman / early Byzantine. Powerful castles with lofty towers stand alongside stone edifices of pillars, stairs, and domes. The older cities tend to have more grand structures, as Durnalia was once much more powerful than it is now.
