Chapter 2 - Moon and Star

Post by Vardaen » Fri Sep 12, 2008 8:28 pm

Image Winter has plagued man for the last three hundred and fifty years with no end in sight. Civilizations have fallen, and the hope of summer has long since even been a dream.

But some hope remains. The goddess Nantosuelta, who loved Sucellus, whispered to her most loyal follower, an archmage kept alive from a previous age and told him what he must do.

Kylorin was unique among men, the first to be trained in the art of magic by the evil goddess Ceridwen, whom he later betrayed to follow Nantosuelta. Directly instructed by both the evil goddess of conjuration and the good goddess of enchantment he was the most legendary figure of his age, and for now he is the most legendary figure of another age as well.

For decades he has spread knowledge, learning, and civilization among the Amurite tribes, leading them from the cold darkness of ignorance, to the warm light of enlightenment. Yet among all his teachings he left behind something more important; his children.

Born of the various tribes of men and elf, the Children of Kylorin have slowly been gathered by Kylorin's own follower Saeldur of the Sylvanhel. Some have willingly joined the quest, while others have broken away on their own paths.

Kylorin has vanished but winter has taken a slight down turn, and the signs in the sky aligned, Kylorin's plan is in motion, and he must now rely on his children to pick up his torch and burn away the frost.

This is the tale of one of those who may come to the aid of Kylorin's Children and play his own role in their story. A child of the Sylvanhel Elves, Macalanios is a Warden of the Moon Gates crafted by the Anhel. His purpose in life has been to travel between the various gates that link the dwindling Sylvanhel homes together and repair or defend them as they are needed. A fairly low ranking Warden, he has none-the-less earned the respect and praise of his superiors for his good work.

From the Slyvanhel haven of Hanshel-Ars (s. Isle of Paradise) located on an eastern island far out to sea Macalanios makes his trips through the Moon Gates to the lost settlements of his people. Recent warm weather has created an interesting situation where a few gates, lost to winter, have become accessable again. In a hurry to take advantage of this the Archdruid has sent out his most trusted Wardens to three locations that have not had activity in over one hundred years.

Macalanios has traveled through the Moon Gate of Hanshel-Ars to the gate of Fin-Arfinlos (s. House of the Summer Breeze), located fourty miles north of his true destination. From that haven, where Valanhel Elves still reside and do battle with Mulcarn's Frostlings he has turned south toward the lands of the Amurites, a collection of human tribes that show promise of breaking free of the cold dark age into enlightenment through the teachings of the Arch Mage Kylorin.

The Slyvanhel Warden's mission however is to travel the wilds until he reaches the gate of Parth Ernil (s. The Green Sward). It is this gate that was lost to Mulcarn's Enternal Winter, but divinations have revealed it may once again be accessable. Macalanios has treked through the tundra for weeks now and is nearing the location where the Parth Ernil gate is said to be.

The warm weather of the last weeks however is faded, and winter has returned. Cold winds blow howling across the desolate lands down from the Skyreach Mountains that are visible in the distant south (not that far away). A storm is coming to the region from the northwest and in its van come the cold wraiths of Mulcarn. The Warden travels through a lightly wooded region, tomorrow, if the weather hold just long enough, he should reach his goal in the rolling hills and hidden vales ahead.

The old elf looks up at the sky, its beautiful purple twilight marred by the appearance of heavy snow clouds drifting off to the far north west. Macalanios shifts his gaze to the south, where his destination lies, and is blasted in the face by cold winds.

<Anhel>"Ahh, my sweet," the druid coos to his owl companion, "it looks like we might just be able to outrun the storm. But with these cold winds we will freeze if we don't find somewhere to stay tonight. Go, see if you can find something from the air. Tomorrow, by the grace of the forest, we will reclaim a bit of this land from Mulcarn's clutches."<Anhel>

Macalanios shakes his staff, which Faeldeshell perches on, to send her scouting for a cave or hollow tree in which to shelter the night. The elf himself begins looking in his vicinity for such locations, as well as some wood for a fire, and maybe a squirrel or two for dinner.
Sending out Faeldeshell to spot caves and such, and making any necessary survival checks to do what I indicated above.

The snowy owl gives a hoot as it takes flight shaken free from the gnarled staff of Macalanios. The bird beats its wings silently lifting itself up into the air high above. The owl swoops sliently around the landscape as the old elf begins to search for someplace on the ground.

The winds blow down across the landscape as Macalanios seeks a place to shelter. As he searches he collects firewood, there are plenty of dead trees here, too many for the Sylvanhel's liking, but the old wood will burn nicely for him tonight.

With a screch the Faeldeshell circles in the air some twenty yards to the west. It has found something from the air, and once its master notices it it dive bombs down into a clump of trees out of sight.

Macalanios looks up to the sky as he picks up some firewood. He is just in time to see Faeldeshell pick a copse of trees where she thinks shelter can be found. The elf grunts as he hauls the firewood with him in the direction of his companion, hoping to find suitable shelter for the wintry night that is sure to be upon him soon.

The older elf grunts moving with the load of fire wood through the snowy terrain. In a few places drifts of snow have melted slightly and then refroze leaving them slippery and the Macalanios has to pick his way with care over the land. Slipping around he comes to within sight of where the owl circles over before it lands lightly in the top of an evergreen tree. There among the trees, partially hidden by the snow of the area is what looks like a dome of white rock. The dome has a dark opening in it, perhaps a few feet across. The entire 'structure' is only perhaps 10 feet in diameter with snow piled up around it leading to its 8foot high top. Icicles hang in the opening, and some it appears reach up from the ground like white stalagmights and stalatights.

Macalanios drops his pile of wood, and goes to inspect the odd structure. He cannot tell if the thing is artificial or natural. "These icicles," he says absentmindedly to Faeldeshell, "they almost look like teeth . . . "
Knowledge Nature and survival checks to see if the structure is safe shelter.

Dropping his wood pile and moving forward the Sylvanhel's first impression is not wrong, the iciles are teeth! On closer inspection as he moves forward Macalanios realizes that the structure is actually some great big skull! The mouth lies open creating a hut like entrance with the pointy teeth serving as stalagmites and stalagtights. The whole skull is coverd and banked with snow and fallen branches. Knowing his lore well enough the druid of the Anhel can guess that the rounded skull belonged once to some great giant. Truely a large creature to have such a massive skull.

Just then the snowy owl in the tree gives a worried hoot.

The druid has heard the "hoot of despair" before from his friend, and immediately takes the opportunity to go to ground. Without looking back, he enters into the skull of the creature and heads to the back of its skull, pulling his heavy fox-fur cloak around him. He listens carefully for any creatures that may have been approaching.

The druid hurries into the skull and finds that the giant's head is as empty now as it was when it was in use. A hole in the bone near the back of the skull has allowed snow to drift into the chamber, but other than packed ice and snow on the floor there is nothing else in the head. That is nothing but some drawings on the inside of the skull. However with no time to worry about that now Macalanios pulls his fox fur cloak tight around him and peers out of the mouth, his keen ear's listening.

It doesn't take him long to hear what the owl had seen approaching. Tromping through the forest perhaps twenty yards away the heavy sound of a score or more of heavy boots crashes through the tundra. The sound of boots is joined with the sound of weapons, armor, and shields rattling and banging against one another. More importantly however Macalanios can hear the gruff and garbled voices of Forstlings. It is a mix of common words and those of the Frostling tongue, which Macalanios doesn't speak. All the Sylvanhel can make out are snapped voices, shouted orders and some yelps of pain as the crack of a whip is heard. The large force is marching south, directly along the Warden's own path, or so it sounds.

The sound of crashing boots and shouting in a language that he can't understand -but can identify as belonging to Frostlings- keeps Macalanios firmly rooted in his little hideaway. There is no chance of him being able to defeat such a large force, and even if it were much smaller, he is not a fighter by any stretch of the imagination.

After the sound of the squad of Frostlings has passed, the Warden pops his head out of the skull in order to see if they have truly gone.
