Prelude: A seven-pointed star

It is the year 3010 of the Third Age in Middle-earth. One after another, ancient horrors awake, called by their master, Sauron, the Lord of the Rings. This is a time when heroes are needed, to protect the Free People and keep the evil at bay. This is high fantasy in a setting where there is low obvious magic using the HARP system.

Vardanil reaches the top, "I did it." He speaks outloud, proud of himself for now. He stalks the edge of the clearing for a moment scanning the land below around where he came up and enjoying the view for several minutes. "Now to buisness..." With reverent paces he moves up to the stone and puts a hand on it, "Who placed you here ancient brother stone? What have you seen in your years?" He breaths out heavy, pleased at the peace he has here.

He then begins to seek a message, either a note or stone marker left at the base, something scrawled on the stone, or anything else out of place. While he's at it he seeks tracks still curious about thet token he found back at the camp eailer.

Vardanil looks around and a feeling of peace flows through him. This is indeed an ancient place and he can sense that is has not (yet) been tainted by evil. The forest prevents a really good view but also hides those here from curious eyes. As on the whole hill, trees and bushes grow thick, leaving only a small clearing around the old standing stone.

Looking around, Vardanil finds no signs of anyone being here recently, but he finds some of the ranger's secret signs: A few twigs and stones set in a specific pattern give him a bit of information.
"Ranger here, 27th of Urimë"
"leaving east, to Amon Sal"
"bandit activity reported, need more information"
"need to send scouts"
Vardanil thinks for a moment. The 27th was two weeks ago.

"Two weeks... that seems about right." He is piecing together the dates from his guesses abou the bandit tracks he saw and the signs here. He is suposed to meet others here, but the man that was here last has left word that he's gone to Weathertop and that interests the young man. Do I stay or do I go?

He decides that he should remain here, atleast for the day and into tomorrow incase the man he's waiting for does arrive. He hears his stomach rumble, "Alright first I'll eat and then figure out what to do." He goes about foraging in the nearby woods for nuts or berries, clean water, and any small game he might be able to find that would be suitable for eating. If there is nothing he will resort to eating his dry trail rations he has with him.

The skilled ranger Vardanil finds some berries and a bit down the hill, he finds a spring coming out of the rocks. He sits down and eats and drinks when he sees a rabbit jumping about in the clearing.

Vardanil had thought to get himself a coney or something similar but not seeing the rabbit he can't bring himself to shoot it. So he just sits watching it hop around the forest in blissful ignorance. He remains seated for a while just enjoying the view and the sounds. "What do I do now?" he asks himself.

Vardanil sits and waits, pondering. The rabbit jumps around, looking curiously at the ranger from afar.
We'll need to let the other thread catch up. I hope they will reach the summit soon. They will join this thread then. So I will ask for a bit of patience.

Vardanil watches the rabbit, "Such a simple creature, yet so complex in how it fits into the world." He whistles a little tune, that turns into a hum, and becomes him actually singing a song from times gone by...

Gil-galad was an Elven-king.
Of him the harpers sadly sing:
the last whose realm was fair and free
between the Mountains and the Sea.

His sword was long, his lance was keen,
his shining helm afar was seen;
the countless stars of heaven's field
were mirrored in his silver shield.

But long ago he rode away,
and where he dwelleth none can say;
for into darkness fell his star
in Mordor where the shadows are.

He leans back, elbows on the ground and looks up into the sky with smile on his face. Sometimes the young man over takes the Ranger in Vardanil and his flights of fancy take hold. He closes his eyes and realizes he's rather tired....
Its fine with me. We can leave it here and when you are ready let me know.

OK, shouldn't take too long.
The soft buzz of insects and the birdsong make Vardanil feel tired. His eyes close and he falls asleep.

Vardanil wakes up, his ranger senses even working while sleeping. He can hear it: Someone, or something is coming up to Pen Drebi.

With a quite roll Vardanil moves toward the edge of the flat area, his cloak wraps around him as he finds a place in the brush to hunker down and hide in. He has no time to worry about weapons yet, so he kneels down among the bushes, opposite from where the noise if coming from and sits in hiding watching to see who or what appears.
