Re: Prelude: Wool and Steel
"As you wish, traveler. Fare well." Eothric says. And Thralin only grunts when Traek leaves.
The Dunlending walks on, but as night has fallen, this is quite difficult. More than once he walks into a bush or small tree. After about half an hour he sets up camp.

Re: Prelude: Wool and Steel
Traek gets far enough away to tie up his mule again. He won't be able to start a fire again. He does not trust Eothric. He is a Rohirrim, or maybe not, if he is not truthful, that certainly he is trouble. He attempts to look back toward where he had come.
He attempts to sleep, lightly, he can sleep when he gets to Bree. He keeps his hand on his blade.

Re: Prelude: Wool and Steel
He sleeps and uneasy dreams come to him.
In his dream he sees orc and goblins dressing up as humans and walking into some unnamed town. None of the men and women living there spot the disguise.
When he wakes up, the other camp is gone, Eothric and Thralin have already started on their way. He begins walking north again, making good headways on the old, green road. Even if it is derelict, walking is still much easier and faster on the ancient road.
...
A few days later, much further north, though still several day's walk from Breeland, Traek wakes up in the middle of the night. He believes he has heard some unusual sound.

Re: Prelude: Wool and Steel
Traek has seldom used a fire. He has run into too many people in the wilderness to think it wise. He has no idea why there are so many people about these days. Traveling is dangerous, he knows this first hand, and typical travelers aren't merchants, they are looking to make trouble.
He draws his sword silently and peers in the direction of the noise he heard.

Re: Prelude: Wool and Steel
Suddenly, a small but vicious fox-like creature jumps out of the darkness and right at Traek.
He has never seen such an animal - it is the size of a dog and bares viscious teeth and seems mad with rage (or feeding frenzy).
The beast jumps at Traek and tries to bite him, but it does not penetrate the leather armor and so Traek is left with only a few bruises.

Traek once again keeps a defensive stance, stabbing at the creature while keep himself back, ready to leap aside.
The merchant fights for his life, it appears, but he does not do so recklessly.

The predator jumps this way and that and is therefore difficult to hit. Traek swings his longsword.
The beast dodges the merchant's longsword, but falls on its back, coming up fast with but a few bruises, it lunges for Traek's throat.
The beast manages to ram Traek with its head, causing as good as no damage.

Re: Prelude: Wool and Steel
Traek keeps with the same techniques that have kept him generally safe. He figures the creature might get bored eventually and run off, at least he hopes so. He readies a parry and stabs, attempting to get it to run away or to kill it, either way.
