Interlude Chapters 2-3: A Side Venture

Post by Vardaen » Fri Feb 12, 2010 11:01 pm

It has been five years since The Third War started and conflict still can be found at every turn.

Here continues the tale of a handful of would be heroes of the Horde...

Image

The truce between the Horde and Theramore Isle is holding, but there are grudges on both sides. Both Alliance and Horde races expand across Kalimdor, settling in whatever habitable locations they can find. Lordaeron remains controlled by the undead, although a civil war rages between Arthas' Scourge and those undead who have broken his control, called the Forsaken. Demons roam freely across the world, terrorizing what few human forces remain. Although the world has suffered bloodshed and warfare for years, there is still no indication that the turmoil will end soon. Each of the mortal races begins to position itself for what could soon become the most crucial period of time in the world's history.

An Excerpt from Brann Bronzebeard To His Highness, King Magni Bronzebeard, Rightful Sovereign of Ironforge and Dun Morogh, and Grand Explorer of the Guild --

The Barrens are massive '€" it took days for me to cover the whole thing, even riding a borrowed ram for most of the journey. I left from Ratchet the Goblin Port town and traveled north exploring the other regions. After visiting several Horde settlements, I realized something important.

With the exception of the Forsaken, the Horde seems to have less tension among their races than we do in the Alliance. While I drink with humans and elves on a regular basis, and gnomes have always been our close friends, I rarely see the level of kinship among us as I saw among the Horde. I noted several mixed race groups practicing for contests in the Darkmoon Fair in Mulgore. To be blunt, I envy the amount of cooperation I saw here, and I'd like to see our own people get off their high horses and work together like this. The kinship here reminded me of what I saw in the Second War '€" I'm reminded of a high elf priest who saved my hide and nearly lost his own life in the process '€" and it's something I haven't personally seen much since within the Alliance. The Alliance needs a real smack in the face, because we aren't working as a team, and that needs to change '€" and fast.

The Barrens is a land of blasted rock and dirt, a sharp contrast to the surrounding lands. Perhaps the most important feature of the Barrens is that it is connected to so many other regions. From the Barrens, one can travel to Ashenvale in the north, Durotar in the northeast, the Stonetalon Mountains in the southwest, Mulgore in the west, Dustwallow Marsh in the southwest, and Thousand Needles in the south. One can reach any of these locations from a single road, and Crossroads provides flying mounts to the Horde as well. The central portion of the Barrens is almost all flatland, with a few trees and pools of carefully guarded water. The borders are marked with low mountain ranges that can be crossed with sufficient effort.
Image
The Talonbreakers have just returned from a three day jaunt south into the central region of the Barrens where they discovered the ruins of the Titan home of Bael Modan. Having cleared out the Trogg infestation there the group turned around and returned to the Crossroads before exploring the ruins proper inorder to make it back in time for this side venture they have been assigned by Lt. Match.

Dawn is rising over the Barrens and The Crossroads threatening to be hot once again (as it always is). Their task today is simple, join up with the Venture Company Carvan that is traveling northeast to Durotar and to make sure the wagons and the goblins reach the Hordelands there safely.

Hand picked, the Talonbreakers are representing the Horde to the Venture Company on this trip and success or failure could mean strong economic growth or terrible embargoes from the large goblin trading company.

One by one the Orcs, Goblin and Tauren wake, perform their morning rituals and come to the soldier mess hall in the barraks they are staying in. The Venture Company caravan will be getting ready near the kodo pens, but you still have about and hours worth of time before you have to be there. The soldier's mess is a long hall with tables and benches set up for orcish eating. Peons move around the room serving food to the warriors and others that are sitting here eating. The room has a constant dull roar of conversations from the orcs present as they go about eating their breakfast. About a dozen or so other Orcs are present from various groups in and around Crossroads.
New Quest Gained: Venture Company '€" Escort the Venture Company caravan safely from Crossroads to the boarders of Durotar. (A Five Day Trip) And return home.
Welcome jigglypuff69 and mackaber to the game as Lugar and Gizzik respectively! I want to take a bit of time to let these guys post in for the first time and get to feel their characters.

Also if you want to resolve the loot thread, and sell your large loot pile, now is a good time. You have enough time to deal with it right now, and not suffer any issues with the Venture Company.

Blackblade's right boot taps out the catchy tune of his previous evening's last sing song, as he tears a hunk of salted fish off in his craggy teeth.

Crunching and munching the piscine rations, Grim considers the previous night's triumphant tales. It was too bad Match was such a stickler for geography... He's a likable Boss when he's not hung up on details.

Popping the tailfins past his fangs, and washing the whole ordeal down with a swig of Mess tent grog, Grim stretches his arms overhead in an axeless overhand swing.

"Say what ya will about these fish rations, they beat the hell outta fungus, and they're saltier than the Great Sea Fleet. My compliment to the chef... or whoever poured 'em outta the crate."

Ogbar shrugs. "Whatever works for you." He chooses not to eat the fish, himself.

"Should we tidy up after the last trip and get some new coin in our pockets, before we've got to get to the meet up?"

"I already done my takin' outta that heap... threw in my old armor for good measure. Anything what's left of that should go to a merchant, let him piece it out, and it'll give us some coin for spending once we get back to Durotar. "

Grim regards the Dwarven Axe poking out from his gear sack.

He had briefly considered tossing it onto the heap, but thus far the piddling offer of a few coppers from the smithy was not enough to get him to part with it.

Gizzik himself munching on the fish rations lets out a loud burp "Best part o the fish is the eyes..." he takes another hearty bite before continuing "as to the loot anything ye can't use might be put te use for nifty contraptions or sold fer some coin but sadly can't shoulder anymore so ye'll have to carry it..." with that he continues picking the eyes out of his salt fish and making sounds of satisfaction.

Lugar looks up from his fish, his blue eyes scanning the others. He shakes the notion of what it must have been like to swim in the oceans and the wonders this fish must have seen before being netted and salted. With a shrug, he takes the whole thing and tosses it into his maw. "Says what you will, Blackblade, but I's rather like fungus. Keeps yer tuskd bright if ya know what I means!" He laughs at the joke and takes a swig of whatever was given to him, water, grog, whatever. It helps cut the salt and the thirst. "I have to says, I gots coin and we should give a last walksy around before settin off. May find sumpthin useful."

Nudging Garruk, who is apparently lost deep in thought, Grim says "C'mon Boss, we oughta be off to market to sell these, then get over to the kodo pens to meet this caravan".

Gathering up his own equipment and the allotment of loot he's been assigned to carry, Grim stands up. Limbering up a little, he makes for the exit of the mess tent.

"These Wagons aren't gonna roll themselves... let's go, Talonbreakers!"

Lugar nods, tossing one last fish in his mouth as he gets up. He chews on it thoughtfully, leaving the tail still sticking from his mout like a scaled toothpick. Gathering up what little he carries, the Shaman makes his way out of the tent.

Garruk, quietly chewing on two thirds of a Slitherskin Mackerel as he goes over a small map, is nudged back to attention by the warrior Grim.

"Hrm?! Oh, oh yeah! We need to sell this off before we get going. We'll have to hit the War Mill and Butcher shops for repairs and provisions, too."

The orc takes one last swig of Barrens grog and takes the map back to its case in the Barracks before gathering his gear.

The Talonbreakers finish munching down their salted Slitherskin Mackerels. The fish are a bit of a delicacy out here in the middle of The Barrens, but no salted ration is too good for Lt.Matches prized unit. The group has a date with the market before heading to the kodo pens and joining up with the Venture Company. So quickly everyone loads up their things, all packed neatly away (for orcs at least) and the extra supplies are bundled up to be dragged off to the various places in the market.

** One Hour Later **

After splitting up and tackling the sleepy open air market place the Talonbreakers rejoin one another. All of the spare goods have been sold except for the weapons and armor. Gizzik found someone intersted in the gems, Ogbar did the same for the pelts and skins. The various jewelery was easy enough to unload. While out there Garruk made sure the group loaded up at the butcher's with some supplies for the trip. Lt.Match has made sure you were supplied too, so the small stipend he gave you for food has been spent but everyone has a total now of two weeks of rations, plenty to get you to Durotar's boarder and back to Crossroads afterwards.

You stand no with the Moonglaives, some suits of armor and that mace in your hand. The group as one unit head to Harq's stall. Harq is a big foreheaded forge rat of an orc. He fought in the Third War but after being badly injured he retired to crafting weapons and armor for the horde so that other warriors could join the fight. He's a deep green skinned orc, loud and gruff, just the way they should be. Grim's already delt with him once, about buying the dwarf axe he has, but now all of you pay him a visist.

At this hour Harq is stoking the fires of his forge for the day a head, and already the heat from it can be felt as you draw up to the wooden stall he has set up with some weapons on display. He turns as he hears to approach, "Well, if its not Lt.Match's favored hunting wolves! What can ol'Harq do for you today?"
Image
I'm going to adjust everyone's sheet with a total of 2 weeks of rations. This will include any rations you already have (many of you still have 5 days of worg meat). This costs you nothing, Match provides, and you haggle in your favor for the rest. For many of you the weight of this puts you at a Med Encumberance Level. You'll want to perhaps find a way to lighten up your load eventually.

Once we resolve the selling of the items here, I'll dish out your coin shares. Assume right now Garruk has all the money waiting to be handed out evenly.
