Prelude: A Man on the Run

What mysteries currently lie in the Western Heartlands? In a large region located in western Faeran, where city-states and hamlets run rampant with no singular government to tie them together, Danger lurks at every turn.

Wilderness threatens to envelope the small farms, and villages throughout the countryside. And the Machinations of corrupt officials threaten the livelihood of villagers and cityfolk alike across the region. The only hope the Heartlands has it the adventurers who flock to the area looking to make a name for themselves, or to fill their pockets with the lost treasures of days forgotten. Run by the DM Nate

Prelude: A Man on the Run

Post by Nate » Thu Aug 28, 2008 9:07 pm

The Year is 1479 DR, the Year of the Ageless One. It's now been ninety-four years since the death of Mystra, and the spellplague that ensued shortly thereafter. Parts of Faeran have been destroyed, some have even been thrown into another plane of existence. Portions of other planes have been thrown into the Faeranian continent, bringing with it the Dragonborn. The Gaps between the planes have moved, and altered. The Eladrin have come to Toril from the Feywild, and taken their own place on Faeran. Monsters have invaded and destroyed towns, Undead fully control the land of Thay under the control of Szass Tam. All in all, the world has seen a drastic change in the last hundred Years...

In the lands of Elturgard, a country formed in the Western Heartlands shortly after the introduction of the spell plague, A young man named Tyrenal Quinn Witherson III walks out of the doors of Alexanders Adventuring supplies.

The city that hosts the store, has been abuzz with some anchient mystical weapon a few adventurers had pawned off at Alexanders store a few weeks ago. Unfortunately Tyrenal has left the store with mild dissapointment, this 'great weapon' was nothing more than a dagger. While the dagger was magical, there was nothing overly special about it, other than being made of bone, and allegedly having a small enchantment on it. It turns out Alexander had thrown the rumor out there himself to boost business, and get more people in his doors.

In the last few days, it seems that's all anyone has been talking about, that and the goblins who are attacking folks on the roads from Triel. Some have said you can see goblins at times wandering the outskirts of the city looking in, studying the city from afar. In fact some of the townsfolk have become so concerned that the towns mayor has put a 2 silver reward on any goblin killed.

Tyre is a long way from home and his funds are running low. He has a few gold pieces the still jingle in his money pouch, but he knows that he'll need to acquire some more. His last encounter didn't fare too well and he knows that the only way to get better at fighting is to throw himself into the fray. He doesn't want to run back home to his family, who would surely give him whatever he asked for. Instead, his longing for adventuring like his grandfather is alive and well in the young man.

He sighs at Alexander's deceiving story. He had hoped the dagger could be worth something. Without much to do, he figures that a day outside the city might do some good for him. If nothing else, if he stumbles upon a goblin and manages to kill it, then he could get a few more coins.

'A goblin or two , I might be able to handle. I just hope there's not an army or anything bigger than that out there.' With his mind made up, he heads towards the city gates to confirm the offer still stands with the guardsmen.
Is the goblin reward real? Or just something others are talking about? I mean are there officials or documents hanging up advertising it? Or just stories?

Tyrenal makes his way through the town towards the nearest guardpost, stationed on the eastern edge of Scornubel. More adept than most at making his way through a crowd, he shuffles his way through the busier than normal mid-summer crowd.

As Tyrenal approaches the guardpost he can spot a couple of the guards stationed there eying the occasional passerby, though with not too much interest. They're main focus the outlying lands beyond Scornubel, and along the roads that fork off a few hundred feet outside the town. The young man also notices it appears there's a couple more guards here than normal.
Yep, That one's real, There have been posts up throughout the town, and posted up in pubs, and weapon/armor stores.

Tyre is just a bit older than nineteen years old. He has been on his own for the last couple of years and has fared not-too-bad with the exception of his runaway friend. He is leagues away from his home and family and being so far away from that, he has been able to make some coin on his own and learn a few skills.

Tyre walks up to one of the guards and asks, "I hear the mayor's offering some silver for the goblins. How does someone prove that he's killed one?"

The guard, a young looking man with blonde hair who only looks a year or two older than Tyre himself, looks Tyre up and down and spits on the ground. To Tyre the action reminds him of how an animal would do to try and exert dominance. "We pay on right ears, and right ears only." He responds somewhat gruffly. "If you bring a left ear, you get nothing. If you kill a goblin with no right ear you don't get nothin'. You ever even seen a goblin before kid? They're awfully shifty."

Another one of the guards, a man in his thirties, standing behind him tries to hold back a laugh when the guard refers to Tyre as a kid. Clearly this guy was put more in the line of questioning because the other guards are higher in status than he is.

Tyre dismisses the guard's aggressive actions stating, 'œThanks for the information.' The young man turns to leave heading out of the city gates down the road. As he makes his way of the city, he takes out his shortsword and loosely carries it in his hand.

Tyre is only able to walk away a few feet before he hears the older guards behind him making fun of the youngest guard.

According to everything he's heard goblins have been spotted everywhere around the town, with most of them being reported on the road to Triel. The direction he heads though is up to him.
This is just for a quick reference. I'll be posting the 4E version of the map in the setting info thread tonight or tomorrow.

Tyre walks a few paces to the north side of the road. The young man expects that if anything appears on the road, then he could easily hide somewhere out of sight. With his shortsword in hand and various other weapons attached to his garments and boots, he heads down the road towards Triel.

He doesn't expect to travel far today, seeing that he'd like to make it back to town by nightfall. It's still morning, so he figures he's got most of the day to hunt for goblins and if he doesn't find any then he might need to find another line of work or move on to another town.

Tyre eyes peeled on his surroundings so far sees nothing. He knows that most of the reports this close to town typically only happen around dusk. Though farther out there will surely be a few, or more...

Since it's still early in the day, Tyre estimates that he'll head out a bit. After all, 'it is a nice day for a walk', he considers. He calculates that he'll walk a bit farther from town and find a nice tree or hiding spot for a few hours and then make his way back to town by dusk.
