INTERLUDE - Pirate Captives!

The first Savage Tide has already touched the mortal world, yet none who live today recall this terrible time of red ruin. It swept over an ancient city, transforming beggar and noble, merchant and thief, resident and visitor, one and all into feral, ravenous fiends. What took the ancients hundreds of years to build came crumbling down in a matter of days. When the final ripples of the tide faded, only ruins remained.

Now, after a thousand years, the hidden architect of the Savage Tide gazes upon new targets. This time, the doom will not be limited to one hapless city. This time, all of civilization is perched on the shore, blissfully ignorant of what the tide is about to bring in.

Confronted with a mutated pirate, Wavedancer quickly casts a spell that should at the very least daze the creature for a moment. Brilliant light in many colors explodes from the half-elf's fingers. But when the light fades, it appears as if it flowed over the pirate like so much water off a duck's back. Apparently whatever has transformed it and rendered it stupid has also made it immune to the effect of such spells.

Fin, seeing this, reacts.

Fin knows he can't cast any spells without his holy symbol, so his only chance to defeat the enemy is with his bare hands. He strikes out with his recently founded sword.

Surprises in the Dark: round 2

Post by Trogdor » Thu Oct 14, 2010 1:33 am

Realizing that he's without access to most of the powers from his god Fin dashes around a pillar of rock, wedging himself in a narrow passage and stabbing with the sword he recovered. But in these narrow caverns, he just can't get the blow to connect.

The mutated pirate responds by lunching again at Wavedancer with tooth and sword. the scimitar strike goes wild. But the teeth scratch a long, but not deep, wound on the half-elf's arm.

Wavedancer and Fin, wondering if they're in over their heads, have a chance to reply.
Round 2: Mutated Pirate 22.8, Wavedancer 22.1, Fin 14

Characters in bold have acted this round.
I'm going to say that attacking from the very narrow passage that Fin is in, he and the pirate both have concealment from each other (20% miss chance). Also, Fin can't use his Dex bonus to AC.

Fin attacks P-1: 12, miss

P-1 attacks Wavedancer with bite: 21, hit for 2
Wavedancer's Fort save: 21, saved, not diseased.
P-1 attacks Wavedancer with scimitar: 8, miss
Fin: unhurt
Wavedancer: 15/26

P-1: unhurt

Currently Fin can cast Detect Magic, Guidance, and Fog Cloud without his holy symbol. He can also cast Longstrider, since the material component is a pinch of dirt (easily obtainable).

"Hold him for a moment!" Wavedancer says, taking a step backward from the assault. "I must protect myself." The aquan is quickly enveloped by a sheen of white that fades just as quickly as it appeared.

Surprises in the Dark: round 3

Post by Trogdor » Tue Oct 19, 2010 11:25 pm

Wavedancer steps away from the pirate and casts a quick spell. Immediately, the half-aquatic-elf is surrounded by a white glow that quickly fades. He has sacrificed an attack to cast the spell, but wisely deems the added protection of the spell to be worth it.

Fin, trying to distract the pirate, swings again. But in this narrow cave, he still can't get the freedom of movement he needs to connect.

The pirate pursues Wavedancer, slashing at his leg with a scimitar and biting again at his arms and shoulders. The bite goes wild, but the blade strikes a glancing blow. Sadly, even a glancing blow with the pirate's strength is painful.

Wavedancer realizes that it's time to damage this creature, while Fin begins thinking about whether it's time to try and heal his new friend.

Fin knows he can't deal with the creature on his own so he concentrates his energy and releases it in a burst.
Channel Energy to heal Wavedancer
I thought to use Channel Energy Fin has to present his holy symbol to use this ability.

Can I 5-foot step SW?
Wavedancer cannot believe how effective this 'man' is. He grunts as his newest defense is breached. The elf is forced to move away again, this time sending a blue orb at the attacker, hoping to at stifle the creature's attack.

Max, you are correct. Channel Energy does require your holy symbol. But I'll allow it without this once because otherwise you guys are so dead.
Wavedancer backs up and hastily casts a spell guaranteed to do damage. Immediately, two blue orbs of energy appear and unerringly strike the mutated pirate. They tear off a part of its arm and a chunk of its side. Apparently its hardiness offers no protection from magic.

Fin then calls upon the power of Procan to heal his new companion. A wave of sea-green light arises around the priest and immediately Wavedancer's wounds begin to heal.
Round 4: Mutated Pirate 22.8, Wavedancer 22.0, Fin 14

Characters in bold have acted this round.
Wavedancer casts MM (two missiles for 3rd level caster) for 8 damage

Fin channels energy (excluding the pirate): Wavedancer gets +10 HP

P-1 moves and attacks Wavedancer with bite: 13, miss
P-1 attacks Wavedancer with scimitar: 13, miss
Fin: unhurt
Wavedancer: 20/26

P-1: -8 damage
Move Wavedancer and P-1 both SW

Wavedancer keeps moving away, happy to actually harm this 'thing'. He realizes there is something very wrong with the pirate. The elf does not change what has worked for him, and now with the blessing of the priest, he may be able to survive long enough to defeat the enemy before them.

Fin uses his position, standing right behind the creature and strikes with his sword.
Attack the creature with short sword
