Prelude: Long Days, Long Nights

Over thirty years ago humans found a cache of ancient Prothean technology on the planet Mars. Studying and adapting this technology, humankind has managed to break free of the solar system and has established numerous colonies and encountered various extraterrestrial species within the Milky Way galaxy. Utilizing alien artifacts known as Mass Relays, the various space-faring races are able to travel instantly across vast stretches of the galaxy. Within the game, humanity has formed the Human Systems Alliance, one of many independent bodies that make up the collective of "Citadel space".Run by DM Tet'Nak

Prelude: Long Days, Long Nights

Post by TetNak » Wed Mar 03, 2010 1:04 am

Officer Kinney's eyes are heavy. The interrogation of the Volus lasted twelve hours, but finally she got the truth.

Natalie Kinney is one of a handful of Human C-Sec officers. She's a minority. She's not trusted and her authority is usurped at every opportunity. She's never been allowed to investigate Turians, Asari, or Salarians, no matter what. Any investigation that leads to one of the three council races is immediately transferred to a 'more seasoned officer'.

Kinney files her report and leaves for what remains of the night. Its after midnight already.

Natalie takes a shuttle to her apartment in the Upper Wards. It isn't nice, but, well, she doesn't live in the ghetto either. Walking home, the street is devoid of people, while a couple shuttles buzz by a hundred meters away.

Kinney's sharp eye notices a shuttle that has touched down about twenty meters past her apartment. Its an odd landing location, and the shuttle spews smoke into the air.

With a quick, reassuring look around Kinney, slowly walks towards the shuttle. She avoids to check the door to her apartment, so there's no indication that she leaves here. After all it's not an uncommon sight to see a human C-Sec officer walking around. Especially not in a place where most of the residents are human.

For her own security Kinney should pull her pistol, at least release the safety catch, but she doesn't want to pose a threat to the pilot.

"Sir, do you need help?" Kinney asks trying to identify the pilot.

Kinney walks toward the shuttle, peering inside, and asking the pilot if he needs help. She quickly realizes the pilot is very dead. The person in the pilot's seat is a Turian, a Turian with a massive hole in his head, and blood all over the cockpit.

The C-Sec officer notices that there are bloody footprints heading away from the shuttle and down the street ...

"Damn it," Kinney exclaims. It has to happen now and here, she thinks. This will certainly be held against the human population, even if it wasn't one.

Activating her omni-tool she contacts the closest C-Sec precinct. As soon as she notices someone's connected she begins to speak. "This is officer Kinney. I'm off duty. A shuttle went down at my position. The pilot is Turain and has been shot in the head. No visible lifesigns," she reports and gets closer to be sure. "He certainly has been killed. Suspect is fleeing on foot and leaves bloody footprints. I request reinforcements to secure the shuttle and an investigation team. I'll take up pursuit of the suspect."

As Kinney speaks she pulls the pistol from her hip and begins to follow the footprints.

The dispatcher responds. "Noted. Your request has been forwarded to on duty officers." Kinney gets no assurance that anyone will come. The C-Sec officer knows they could drag their feet. Meanwhile, she takes off down the street, following the bloody footprints.

Her shields come active and she draws her pistol, just in case.

The footprints go down the street, turn down another, and disappear outside a building's door. A cursory glance shows the door to be locked.

Certain that the suspect has locked the door Kinney begins to look for another entrance, right after checking the building itself. She wastes a few seconds to note the current location in her omni-tool before proceeding. If it's a smart suspect he could have taken his boots or shoes off and ran off without them. But he probably didn't want to do that while he was on the ran. Angry with herself that she didn't notice the suspect when he left the shuttle, she takes a closer look at the closest footprint. Maybe she can figure out the suspect's species. If she cannot find another access she returns to the locked door and tries to override the door's locks with her omni-tool.

Kinney is accessing the door's controls quickly. The magnetic locks shut down within a few seconds as the C-Sec officer cracks the looks very impressively. She opens the door and prepares for trouble. No one is inside, but she spots the bloody footprints ... which are boots. It could be lots of things, Human or Asari, maybe others ..

They lead forward and to an elevator.

Slowley Kinney followed the footprints and activated the flashlight of her omni-tool. With the pistol held low she stands in front of the elevator.

If it's clear that the suspect did use the elevator she uses the muzzle of her pistol to call the elevator, hoping to avoid to destroy any evidence.

The elevator opens, and Kinney finds a dead man slumped in the corner. He has been shot in the head. Inside, their is no obvious indication of what floor the killer went to.

Kinney steps between the elevator doors. And takes a closer look to be sure he's dead despite the shot to the head. It could be a very unlikely case that he survived, but it doesn't seem to be one here.

Trying out every floor may be a futile attempt and take too long anyway. Seeing no further clue she uses the emergency stop button to keep the elevator in place.

Kinney steps away from the elevator and checks the building's owner before calling C-Sec again. "Kinney again. I lost the suspect and found another dead inside an elevator. Probably not the suspect," Kinney says and takes a look at the dead man's footwear. "Pursuit is no longer possible."
