Project Majestic: Inception

Post by Bitom » Mon Jun 21, 2010 10:04 pm

The building is unremarkable. It could be any office building in London, but it isn't. This one is owned by the infamous MI-6 and is used for meetings. There isn't a single window that doesn't have a thick curtain drawn over it, and none of the outside offices are used for anything but storage, break rooms, and other non-secret activities.

The real work happens in the interior offices, where there is no natural light, and no easy way to listen in. Even an invisible man-fly would have to get inside the building to know what happens here.

A group is gathered. they know they'll be given a new assignment today when they arrive, but they don't know what it is. The American and Austrian at least knew they'd be working with Foreigners. The two Brits didn't even know that much. Whoever is giving the briefing has not yet arrived.

The room is bare and looks like nothing so much as a classroom. A few rows of wooden seats with attached desks, and a blackboard. There isn't even a clock here.
Sorry it took me so long to get started. Last week was a big ball of crap on a stick. Please describe your character in your first post.

In one of the chairs is a man seated, wearing a full suit and black tie. He readjusts the knot as he waits, looking around at the others, generally seeming to have little interest in what is going on.

His brownish blond hair is slightly curly, but trimmed short enough to keep it under control. He might be in his early to mid-thirties. Known by the other Brit in the room, his name is Arthur Gold. Arthur does not seem overly large or small, standing probably five feet, ten inches, and maybe a 160 pounds.

He looks down at his fingernails, presses his lips together, a whistles softly as he continues to wait.

Opposite to the head of the table sits a man in a grey suit. He was the last to arrive, but didn't think it was necessary to explain anything, only introducing himself as Samuel Danvers from the US. His black hair is kept short, he's clean-shaven and his brown eyes are fixed on an open manila folder, he drew out his black attache. An exact observer could make out his lean but muscular frame under the suit. One would guess his age to be somewhere in his mid-thirties, maybe a little older.

He only glanced at his wristwatch once while he kept studying his documents. The other can make out schematics and aerial photgraphs which are clipped to the pages, covered with cramped paragraphs of barely readable text. Casual notes line the pages and everyone can make out the bold, stamped letters forming the word CLASSIFIED across any of the documents.

Suddenly he slams the folder shut, his glance wandering to each of the attandants. "How long do we have to wait? I don't want to waste precious time."

Also seated at the table is an Englishman in his later twenties, this one wearing a brown suit. He has straight blonde hair and blue eyes and looks like just the sort of person you see by the hundreds walking through the City every morning - an appearance supported by the soft brown leather attache case that sits near his chair. He introduces himself to everyone as Peter Sterling. What is generally known about him is that he's the son of David Sterling, the founder of the Sterling Radio Company, and has worked as his father's representative across Europe for the past several years. What is not generally known is that he's also been working for the SIS during that time, helping them keep tabs on European troubles.

"You should remember your Milton," he says to Danvers after the American's exclamation. "They also serve who only stand and wait." Sterling takes a sip of mediocre tea from a paper cup. "We all have places we need to be and work we need to get done. I'm sure they won't keep us waiting long."

If gods make men, Herr Doktor Joschka Bauer is the product of a dull Creator indeed. His coffee-colored eyes neither dull with ignorance nor bright with intellect, his nose neither comically big nor effeminately small, his suit well-made if unfashionable, his dirt-brown hair parted on one side. Men who'd known him all his life might have trouble describing him. At thirty he has already settled into the bearing and countenance that will last, largely unchanging, into his eighties. He reads a small book as they wait, making pencil notes in the margins.

"Milton is not my expertise, sir, but I know that bureaucracies move only as quickly as their slowest components. I can only hope your prediction bears out." As unremarkable as his appearance might be, Bauer's voice is a rich baritone barely marred by the light accents of western Austria. Such a voice would suit the wireless quite nicely, if his interests were not so fiercely esoteric.

OK. I guess that's everyone, time to get going
A pair of men walk into the room. The first is known to everyone. Sir Hugh Sinclair, known in Intelligence circles as "C" is the director of MI-6, a man that the two MI-6 operatives in the room would expect to meet perhaps once in thier careers, probably shortly prior to retirement.

The other man wears the uniform and decorations of a US-Army four-star general, as high a ranking officer as exists when the United states is not at war.

"Good morning, gentlemen." says C, as the general settles into one of the seats. "Thank you all for coming here today. We have an interesting problem that we would like you to look into." He hands out folders, each of which has been taped shut with red tape. On the cover of each one has three lines, the first two are common among all of them:
Majestic
CLS-17867
The third line is a number indicating which copy of the file you are holding. None of them have a number higher than six.

"As you can see, this project is using numerical classification. It is best that you assume that only the people in this room are cleared for this information."

If what he's saying is true, only six people have clearance to know the contents of the folders and the progress of the project, and three of them aren't even British.

Arthur blinks as Hugh Sinclair enters the room. He does not hide his surprise as he looks down the the folder handed to him. The Brit looks over it for a moment, then back to "C".

The man wonders why he would have been assigned to something so lofty, or in fact what the assignment is. Arthur waits for permission to unseal the folder and look inside.

"This looks like something I already saw at the NMIC Maryland. But it was a rather short lecture," the American says, ripping away the red tape. Danvers quickly begins to read the documents inside the folder. "Why are we cleared to read this?" He asks, not looking up as he tries to memorize the important details from the file.

Bauer lacks the amazement of his fellows; this 'C' is his superior, and so a natural choice for this briefing, particularly if not six men in the world are privy to the information provided.

Opening the folder and skimming its contents, Herr Doktor Bauer listens also to whatever information the two officers provide. Years of poring over obtuse documents has prepared him well to absorb written data quickly.

"Yes sir," Sterling replies and nods. He moves the folder in front of him, but waits a moment to see whether C intends them to read it now or whether he has further oral briefing. When it's clear that they're to open them, he breaks the seal and skims through what's inside. He's not concerned with getting the details right now, but is more concerned with getting the gist of the briefing.
