Aboard the Zeppelin

Post by Bitom » Tue Jul 27, 2010 6:11 pm

In Paris, Sinclair and Bauer board "Graf Zeppelin" for the short flight to Cairo before the German Zeppelin turns toward South America. Although the tail fin bears the swastika, the passengers represent a cross-section of Europe, albeit one cut from the top levels of society.

With everyone in their seats, the massive dirigible is pulled away from the tower and its propellers start turning, taking it south at a sedate pace.

Sinclair settles himself into his cabin and then makes his way to the lounge for a drink. That would be where most of the passengers would be gathering. And it was a natural place for people to make conversation.
The plan is to spend the first day or two just being a normal passenger, enjoying the view, chatting with other passengers, perhaps playing a card game or two if one breaks out. Basically, figuring out who's there and sharing the idle chit-chat about what's bringing you to Cairo. Nothing out of the ordinary.
I think I have a book at home with the floor plans of the passenger compartments in the Graf Zeppelin. I'll try and scan those in tonight.

Herr Doktor Bauer is not immune to the charms of a luxuriant zeppelin ride, and spends some time familiarizing himself with the accouterments of his cabin as he squares away his few carry-on items - primarily clothes and books.

Having done this, the Austrian makes his way to the lounge, making no rush; with a more gradual trip south, there is time to avoid the appearance of urgency.

The Zeppelin is full to capacity, with a good amount of German, French and English passengers, as well as a few from other nations. Most are in for the long haul, headed for the Americas. These are, for the most part, still in their cabins, unpacking and trying to make the most of the small spaces available.

The Germans, of course, took care of such things upon leaving Berlin, and so the lounge is mostly filled with German travelers at the moment.

Bauer reaches the lounge after a protracted effort in his cabin; for all his light packing, he found himself taking his time putting things away. Embarassed by his own ham-handedness, he tries to pass it off as anxiety for the flight. A meek aside to a German traveler.

The man turns and nods. "Very. The Graf is lovely, but slow. There isn't much exitement, but it's far better than taking a tramp."
Switching this thread to german as the default for now.

Sterling enters the lounge and finds an empty chair. Once seated, he catches the eye of a steward and asks for a drink. He looks around the small lounge and then at the nearest other passenger. "Well, it looks like we'll be traveling companions for the next few days," he says, extending is hand. "Peter Sterling. Pleased to make your acquaintance." His German is delivered with a distinct hint of Switzerland in it, a byproduct of his Swiss mother.

The man shakes, "Basil Fontaine." The man has an odd mix of accents, hard to place, but the name helps. His early schooling must have been British, but whenever he learned German, he was in France.

"First time onboard?"

"I've had a few small trips across Germany on the short-range lines," Sterling replies. "But this is my first trip on the Graf Zeppelin. You?"
