Chapter 1: Survival of the Fittest - Alton Zet

A brand new era for humanity and mutantkind begins here! The rise of mutants coincided with global and secret agencies dedicated to detain all mutants and protect humanity. Most of earth's population including presidents, prime ministers, and royal families remain unaware of the mutant struggle and their powers. 'Nuff said.

Alton continues on to his living quarters and settles in for a rest. The last few days has been more work than normal, although it feels like he's spent most of that time outside of his laboratory, so whether or not it counts as actual work is debatable.

The Atlantian scientist is able to get a few hours of sleep until he's awakened by someone at his entrance. As he makes his way to the door, a message signal flashes on his communication console. A quick glance reveals that there's two Atlantians wearing normal attire standing outside his entrance.

Alton makes a point to play up how groggy he is feeling as he moves first over to the communications console to play the message there. He turns down the volume to minimize the risk of those outside hearing it.

Alton presses a few buttons to turn down the volume and play the message. The read out displays the sender of the message as Captain Nehe.

"Alton Zet, there has been a break-in at your laboratory. We've dispatched some guardsmen to escort you back to the laboratory. Your presence is requested immediately."

It appears that the day isn't over yet for Alton and that he'll not be getting much sleep tonight, if any.

Alton Zet meets the guardsmen and is then taken to the military laboratory where he finds about a dozen guardsmen and Captain Nehe. The captain heads over to meet Alton as soon as he notices Alton's arrival.

"Alton Zet, it appears that the two guardsmen standing guard here were assaulted and Kareb's badge was used to gain accessed to the laboratory. We're unable to find her and a couple other scientists are missing." The captain says.

As they talk, Captain Nehe gently leads Alton into the laboratory so they can speak a bit more in private. As they get near to the laboratory, Nehe dismisses those inside so that only Alton and the captain are in the lab.

The laboratory is in utter chaos and appears like a grenade went off or if one of the surface weather phenomenons known as a tornado had just hit the laboratory. The computer processing systems are all destroyed and drones appear to have been salvaged for parts. Kareb's badge remains laying on one of the tables within sight.

The captain turns to Alton and asks, "I know she was an good assistant and it's hard to think about, but I need to know if she's involved of her own volition." He waits a moment for Alton to answer and then follows up, Her shadow guardsmen were also assaulted. Two of the guardsmen are deceased and the other two are in critical condition."

"Two other military scientists are unaccounted for which includes Kalta Jel and his assistant. We've requested security forces to search the city, but I do not think we'll find any of them here." Captain Nehe concludes.

Alton silently surveys the destruction of his workspace, listening to the captain but not answering.

After several minutes he responds, "I don't know if Kareb was involved, Captain Nehe. I don't believe she would do something like this, but I cannot answer definitively without more to go on. Rest assured that I shall find out, however."
Search the lab for any clues using Search and Investigate, taking 20 if possible. If the military personal are searching as well or are willing to help, then Alton will aid them or have them aid him, whichever is more beneficial. If the devices are still in the lab then carefully inspect them for damage/sabotage, repair them if needed, and equip them.

Nothing that Kareb has done since she became Alton's assistant would led him to believe that she's in league with the humans, but maybe it was all a ruse. Her recent investigation and revelations about the drone technology, all of that seemed natural and genuine to Alton.

The drones appear to have been salvage for anything useful. The processing units and circuits have been taken. Only the drone shells and some loose wires remain along with a few simple pieces of metal. Everything useful to their investigation seems to have been taken or destroyed beyond repair.

Alton does find something interesting. Kareb's tools appear to be a bit out of order and throw careless across the room. If it's one thing that Alton knows, it's that Kareb always kept her tools neat and orderly and always in the same location.

Looking around her workspace, he finds her work destroyed and laptop taken that stored all of her notes. Behind her monitor, he finds her video camera used to film the attack and it's red recording light flashing indicating that it's actively recording. It appears the other guardsmen haven't noticed the video camera's light, just yet. Alton decides to...

Alton will attempt to take the camera without being seen, intending to review the footage alone. If someone sees him, he'll insist on showing it only to Captain Nehe and General Rap jointly. If he isn't seen Alton will point out the indications of Kareb's loyalty to Captain Nehe and wait to watch the video until he can do so alone.

untrained slight of hand, take 10, nobody is actively watching Alton, everyone is just browsing around the area
Alton takes the camera and slips it into his pocket. If noticed, the other guardsmen or Captain Nehe doesn't mention anything and they continue about their investigation.

A few moments later, Captain Nehe suggests, "It appears the intruders sought to hinder our investigation into the drones. Most of the technologies and reports are gone along with Kareb. This will be a huge setback for the investigation. I think that for now, Alton, you'll need to use your own lab, but you should not bring anything related to the drone attack outside the military sector and you should continue to not discuss the matters with anyone."

Alton nods to Captain Nehe and retreieves the rest of his personal items before heading back to his old lab.
