Prelude: Sifting Shifting Sands

The year is 2112. Mankind has all but abandoned a desolate Earth in lieu of exploring space. Their homeworld laid waste and ravaged by a deadly virus, humanity makes their new home amongst the stars and planets that adorn the universe. Haunted reminders of a brutal past soon become prevalent and our heroes are forced to combat an ancient enemy. The dead rise from their graves and live once more! This time in space. AFMBE: Deadly Resurgence is a Hybridized Space Opera campaign in which players battle the undead in a futuristic science fiction/survival horror setting. Utilizing the All Flesh Must Be Eaten rules by UniSystem Games, Deadly Resurgence hopes to tell the tale of what it would be like if one were to encounter technologically advanced forms of undead in space. The game is run by our own Cyborg Psychotic, Eanwulf the Grey.

Prelude: Sifting Shifting Sands

Post by Eanwulf » Wed Jan 04, 2012 12:05 pm

MOOD MUSIC

Early Morning, Right at Second Sunrise
Somewhere in the Badlands of Rigil 7
Uncomfortably Nestled Amidst a Massive Heap of Rocks and Boulders

The morning suns beam down relentlessly upon a lone figure wedged between two rocks. Clad in the protective coverings of a hooded stillsuit, the figure appears to be digging amidst the two rocks with a spade and shovel. As the figure continues to dig, the faint sounds of something approaching can be heard in the distance. What's this? the figure thinks to himself as he tears loose a sizable chunk of white-flecked rubble; his question being twofold. Curious as to what might be approaching, the figure quickly drops the white-flecked stone in his hands and reaches into a nearby backpack, pulling forth a sand-covered set of trinocs. Placing the goggles to his own bodysuit's viewports, the figure then scans the horizon towards the sounds of the oncoming disturbance. Meanwhile, the tiny little voice in the back of the figure's mind begins to ramble. "We weren't expecting any visitors today."

Veejay is quite pleased with the results of this little expedition. He's been finding plentiful samples of the valuable mineral Trioxinate 245. He will surely get a bonus for this. Of course, when the Knights Templar find out about it, they will certainly try to claim this area for their own, operating through some elaborate series of fronts and shell companies of course. Control of this mineral will give them control of the oxygen-generating stations on Rigel 7 and they seem to be trying to establish a foothold on this planet, for reasons not yet clear to him. He's not worried about the Illuminati. Veejay is fairly certain that they have uncovered the secrets of alchemy and can produce any mineral they want. He'd warn his superiors to watch out for the Knights Templar trying to horn in on this find, but he knows from past experience that they will just think he's crazy.

Veejay looks up from his samples as he hears a truck roaring past. Someone is riding in the back, throwing dynamite out apparently at random. But Veejay knows better. It's possible it could just be one of the local yokels, but it could be the Knights Templar at work. Perhaps they are trying to scare people away from the area? No, that doesn't make sense--they are much more subtle than that. It's why no one but Veejay has been able to figure out what they're up to. It could be the Illuminati, trying to keep the Templars away. He shakes his head. Or it could be nothing at all. He knows his superiors would want him to concentrate on documenting how much Trioxinate 245 there is in the area, not chasing after a truck on the chance it is the Templars or Illuminati.

Veejay thinks a while, then decides that his duty to stop the Templars and Illuminati outweighs any obligation to his boss. He decides to follow this truck--at a safe distance. He packs up his equipment and samples, puts it in his car, then waits until the truck is out of sight. Then he moves forward slowly, following the tracks it left in the sand. It would never do to follow the truck too closely. He could get captured and mindwiped, something he suspects has happened before.

Taking the time to carefully pack away his samples of Trioxin 245, Doctor Veejay makes sure to note the location of his discovery and then sets off in pursuit of the dreaded Templar Knights. Stubbornly, the engine to Dr. Veejay's Rally Rambler 2000 whines and churns itself into ignition and then hums chuggingly along as he sets off into the distance. The trail is not hard to follow for Dr. Veejay. Quite easily in fact. The random blastmarks left by whomever seems to have the obsession with tossing dynamite out of the back of the truck marks the vehicle's path quite easily. Heading in the proper direction, the good doctor soon realizes that he is heading towards the border of the last known breathable converter. What is this? the tiny little voice in the back of Dr. Veejay's mind inquires. Where doth these knights lead us? Surely it must be somewhere unwholesome!

Your Car
Patterned after an old Rally Car, your vehicle is one big hodgepodge of gear and supplies. Just take this image and junk up its appearance, slapping numerous boxes, crates, satchels, and survey gear on the sides and tops. Viola you have Veejay's Party Mobile!

Image
Trioxinate Compound 245
Located in sparse conglomerate deposits, 245 Trioxin is what makes Atmospheric Conversion possible on Rigil 7. Bombarded by subsonic and ultrasonic frequencies the rather unique element can actually be charged up enough to generate its on subatomic reaction that can then be used to serve as the fuel cells for whatever atmospheric converter might be in need of power at the time. One thirty minute bombardment of sub/ultrasound frequencies can charge a single pound of 245 Trioxin up enough to duel a single atmospheric converter for upwards of one week's time. Generally mined in the tons by professional corporations, 245 Trioxin serves as ample income for those skilled enough to locate the deposits in the Badlands and find someone willing enough to pay their atypical exuberant price. Seeing how clean air is much in demand in the Badlands, negotiating price isn't too terribly much of a problem.

Veejay grows increasingly suspicious as he realizes that the truck is heading out of the breathable zone. He stops, putting on his survival suit and making sure his breather is fully functioning. He pauses before continuing on. The blast marks make it almost too easy to follow. Perhaps the Knights Templar are trying to lure him into a trap, to do something dastardly to him where no one can find him. His curiosity finally outweighs any sense of caution. He makes sure his pistol is in easy reach and in working order, then continues cautiously on. He is quite sure that if he is careful, he can outfox the Templars. He has, after all, uncovered so many of their secrets so far. And maybe now he can get physical proof!
Eanwulf, I don't see Veejay as having voices talking to him. He may be a little mentally unbalanced, but I don't think he's outright crazy. There are plenty of conspiracy theorists who otherwise have their feet planted firmly on the ground.

Sorry. Didn't mean to insinuate that he was crazy, merely trying to hint as to his motivations for following Zeke. In all honesty, I should have really just sent the tiny little voice messages to ya as PM's. Then let you respond in game accordingly. My bad.
Making sure that he is well-prepared to handle whatever the Badlands has in store for him, Dr. Veejay Parathasan puts the pedal to the metal and presses onwards beneath the morning suns. Following the well laid trail, Veejay soon finds himself slamming on the brakes as hard as he can. Apparently, the truck up ahead has stopped and signs of commotion can be seen coming from its occupants. Praying to whatever gods he calls his own, the good scientist then begins to wonder whether or not he's been seen.
Wahoo, Rules Time. Well at least one of em!

Trying to shadow Zeke and his pickup truck is going to be a Resisted Task. What we are going to do here first is roll d10 + Veejay's (Intelligence + Surveillance) to represent how smart he is at snooping the trail behind Zeke's truck. Now Veejay isn't skilled at Surveillance so I'll slap a basic -2 Unskilled Use penalty to the roll as well as another -2 penalty since he is out in the middle of frigging nowhere and has little place to hide for a total penalty of -4 to the roll. Since the roll is Unskilled, the highest possible outcome for Veejay would be 12, i.e. the second degree of success. Now let's roll the die!

[Veejay's roll =10 on the die. Enter New Rule!]
On a roll of 10, roll again, subtract 5, and add the result (if higher than 0) to 10. So, if the second roll is 6, 7, 8 or 9, the final result is 11, 12, 13 or 14, respectively. If the second roll is 5 or less, nothing is added and the final roll remains 10. If another 10 is rolled, add 5 to the roll (for a total of 15), and roll again. If a player rolls a string of 10s, she keeps adding 5 to the result and rolling again.
If curious, there is also a Downside.
On a roll of 1, roll again, subtract 5, and if the result is negative, a negative roll replaces the first roll. If the result is positive, the roll remains 1. If the second roll is between 5 and 10, the final result remains 1. If the second roll is 2, 3, or 4, the final result is -3, -2 or -1, respectively. If the second roll is 1, the prior roll is replaced with -5, and the player must roll again (applying the same rule).
[Veejay's second roll, d10=Another Damned 10! Woot WTG New Rule!]

Veejay's roll is currently a 15 with another chance at rolling the die.

[Veejay's third roll, d10=7, +2 to the result for a final roll result of 17]

Let's add some adjustments!

17+5(Intelligence)-4(Penalties)=18. Sadly the most he can get is a result of 12 due to it being an Unskilled test.

Final Outcome for Veejay's Surveillance roll is a 12.

Now let's assign this TN to Zeke's Perception+Notice Test.

[Zeke's roll, Difficulty 12, d10+5=9, Failure!]

Poor Zeke, didn't manage to Notice Dr. Veejay trailing him from behind.
Rest easy, you didn't appear to have been noticed during the commotion. Feel free to read MadVlat's thread "Miner Diner Sixty-niner" to see what all has happened as of recent. I must sleep now and will continue on from work tomorrow. Ciao!

Veejay sits very, very still, hoping that by doing nothing he can somehow manage to make his car look inconspicuous. Apparently, it works, because the truck pulls out and continues on its way. Well, perhaps these are just local yokels, he thinks to himself. Surely the Knights Templar would be much cleverer? Or they could be trying to lure him into a trap. Veejay decides he should probably turn around while he can--but he can't resist, just on the off chance that the might actually be Templars. Once the truck is out of sight again, he begins moving cautiously forward, trying to follow its trail again.

MOOD MUSIC

Having cocked and re-cocked his gun numerous times as well as made damned sure that noone is following him, Dr. Veejay Parathasan continues to stalk the mysterious pickup truck in his car. The trail eventually becomes quite troublesome to follow; the lack of dynamite blasts making it difficult to determine the truck's proper heading. Fortunately, Dr. Veejay is a man of science and using said science, he quickly determines the most logical path Zeke's truck will take. Before long he finds himself parking at the base of a hill to continue on by foot.
[Veejay's Difficult Perception test, d10+2*=11, Decent Success!]

* -2 Difficulty penalty. You lack Notice so defaulting to Perception with an appropriate penalty.
You don't know about the relay station (see Zeke's thread) but do know that the Geiger counter(s) in your car are starting to spike off and on, clearly indicating that there is some form of radiation present nearby. Welcome to the Badlands! Feel free to PM me with any questions and sorry the post is so short. Comes with being a ninja lol. Oh yeah, you don't "have" to go on by foot, just seemed the most logical.

Veejay pauses at the foot of the hill. His mind is still caught between two possibilities--that these are just local prospectors and that these are the Knights Templar. He stares at his Geiger counter, which is going off. That settles his mind--these are probably the Templars. What kind of idiot prospector would go out into a radioactive wasteland? Whereas the Templars might well have their own protection against radiation, one that they have yet to share with others. Veejay makes sure he has all his necessary equipment on him and slowly eases himself out of the car. Very cunning, he thinks. Making me abandon my car and follow them on foot. I'll be much more vulnerable that way. This line of thought causes him to change his mind, climb back in the car, back it up some way, then race at the hillside, hoping to successfully climb the hill in his car.
Driving check. I expect I will fail, but what the heck.

OK. Now that I have clarification. Let us begin.
Grinding the gears to his beat up rambler, Dr. Veejay proceeds to back his vehicle up for about 20 meters or so before shifting the car into drive and gunning the engine; zooming forwards to try and climb the hill. Gaining what speed he deems is necessary to navigate the incline, the good Dr. then proceeds to kill the engine and relies on the momentum he has built thus far to try and project his vehicle on up the hill. A smile of confidence quickly creeps across Dr. Veejay's face as he realizes that his endeavor has indeed proven to be a success. Huzzah!

Perhaps a bit too premature in his celebration, the good Dr. soon begins to become greatly worried. Apparently, he has forgotten to factor in the acceleration effects caused by his vehicle cresting the hill and then beginning to descend down the other side. Desperately struggling with the breaks as best he can, the good Dr. brings his car to a soft-steppened halt much later than he had wanted to. Now settling in a cloud of dust, Dr. Veejay Parathasan looks ahead to the distance and notices Zeke's pickup parked down below!
Interesting ploy. Dexterity+Drive=5. Easy enough to cut the engine off when you need to. Figuring out how much is enough momentum to make it up the hill and then stopping the vehicle at a safe distance once there however, is another story. Or should I say, stories.

[Veejay's Intelligence+Drive roll, d10+5*=11, 2nd degree success!]
Relatively easy to guesstimate the speed needed to make it up the hill.

[Veejay's Dexterity+Drive roll, d10+1*=3, Failure!]
Sadly, you have waited too long to begin stopping the car. Having gained too much speed on the decline you spend too much time bringing the vehicle to a silent halt are are for the most part, within view of Zeke and the others.

*-2 and -4 degree of difficulty
Look for a PM. Read Zeke's post to see what they're up to. I'll handle whether or not they see you in his thread. Have fun!

Veejay breaths a sigh of relief as the car stops. He pauses to collect his wits and see where he is relative to the Templars' truck. With alarm, he realizes it has stopped below and he may well be in sight of the diabolical fiends. They appear to have stopped by an abandoned power station. Veejay steps out of his car, leaving the door open and looks at them with his binoculars, trying to deduce just what they are doing. He pauses as he takes it in. These people certainly did not look like Knights Templar--two rough-looking men and a gekkan. To Veejay's knowledge, the Templars do not admit non-humans to their ranks. Nor do the Illuminati. Both were bent on perfecting humanity--or at least, achieving their own twisted vision of human perfection--and wrre quite bigoted against non-humans. Veejay feels a wash of disappointment go through him. These are probably just local yokels after all.

He gets ready to turn his car around and leave, heading back to where he found the samples of Trioxinate 245, when just what the yokels are doing registers. They're siphoning off power from someone's power station. He is quite sure that it is not their private property, though it is clearly someone's from the sign. He climbs into the car and turns on the communication equipment, plugging in the number for the sheriff's office. When he receives a reply, he says, "Hello. I would like to report a theft in progress."
