The City of Carnac was founded thousands of years ago by the Elves of Anheldamar, built for their loyal allies, the Men of Caldera. Known originally as Carandrelle, the City was famed both for its beauty and its strength as a fortress on guard against the evil of the Dark Empire. Long ago the elves fled the lands of Men, and Carnac, ruled by the MacRath clan, became the capital city of a great realm, which was to endure for many centuries more. Yet when the Great War came some five hundered years ago, the hordes of Raughir swept through Carandrelle and decimated it, taking the city for their own.

After the defeat of Evil, the human citizens of Carnac declared their independence. Still, the dark legacy of the Empire remained, and the city would never recover what it had lost. Quickly it fell into decay and darkness, and the glory that was Carandrelle became the shadows that are Carnac.

In the days since the defeat of Drakkar and the establishment of independence, Carnac has been ruled by a succession of politicians and pseudo-aristocrats, whose names are for the most part remembered by no one. The latest of these, the Lord Mayor Olbarin, faces increasing troubles among the nobles of the city...

Carnac: The Free City.

In the furthest reaches of Raughir's realm is the free city of Carnac. Set at the base of mount Arabel, and at the northeast corner of the desolation of Drakkar, Carnac serves a tactical importance. It has however been considered free and independent now for a few hundred years.

Built ages ago it served at the capital to Caldera and the seat of power for the MacRath clan. During years of warfare with Rathain the city began to fall into ruin, but before it was lost agents of Uruadum took it as their own. Since then it has survived the Great War of Shadows and gained its freedom. The criminal element of the city has plagued it in recent years however.

Though subject to an ancient claim by the Empire, Carnac has in fact been a free and independent city since the end of the Great War 400 years ago. It has always been a city of shadows and mystery

The city is filled with rapacious merchants, thieves, ruthless assassins, dark priests, principled aristocrats, decent craftsmen, honest dealers and swindlers, exiles, and some of the most skilled mercenaries on the continent. The original Calderan race mingles with the darker Uruadum, and Durnalian visitors and expatriates can be found with the denizens of the Drakkarian Empire visiting and trading. It is, in short, a city of contrasts and wonders, beauty and corruption, wealth and squalor, repression and political intrigue. A city of paradox, any path lies open...provided one has the courage to seek it.
