Prelude - A Man Possessed

Blood of Heroes - A 3rd Edition Mutants and Masterminds Campaign Setting

Earth, 2021. An alien race known as the Skree has ruled over the planet for the past 20 years, subjecting the local populace to the sadistic whims of their most brutal reign. True heroes have been all but eradicated during the Skree Invasion of 1999-2001. That or they have fallen prey to the Skree's corruptive influence and mind-altering technology. Those heroes that still survive, do so either in reclusive hiding or by battling one another in gladiator-like fashion as the Skree's amusement. Now after twenty years of servitude, a new breed of heroes are slowly starting to emerge. Fed up with the decadence that now surrounds them and fueled by their own personal desires, these young heroes have decided to try and make a stand for humanity, once and for all.

Does this new breed of heroes have what it takes to rise up against the Skree and take back their homeworld? Are they capable of breaking the shackles of oppression that bind them to a life of unwavering servitude? Time shall tell True Believers, to see whether or not these few elite individuals truly possess...the Blood of Heroes.

Evil resides in both of the men's hearts like a giant nest of writhing maggots. Malphas is most assuredly smacking his lips with delight.

Still unaware of Jack's presence, the two obvious gang-members continue to guard the laundry room's entrance like a pair of loyal bloodhounds. Every now and again the two men can be seen looking down the stairs as if they were checking on something.
Don't expect much, this is just a Prelude :P

Jack nods to himself, almost disappointed. He wreathes himself in Hellfire, and approaches the two men with a determined look on his face.

"Excuse me, mind if I ask what exactly you're doing guarding a laundry room in my apartment complex?"

Blue flame suddenly engulfs Jack's frame, surrounding his body like a full-on alcohol burn. The demon trapped deep inside of the man has been allowed a chance to come up near the surface for a visit and now lurks beneath Jack's skin like a lethal predator. Malphas quickly floods Jack's mind with horribly violent images and disgustedly twisted desires. Somehow, Jack manages to keep these urges at bay. Instead of succumbing to the demon's temptations, he merely steps forwards from the shadows and tries to communicate with the two thugs guarding the stairwell. "Excuse me," Jack beings to inquire, the two men quickly going wide-eyed and fumbling about with their weapons.

"Yo sh-t boss," one of the thugs barks down the stairwell, "We got some mutha-f'r up here talking and walking around on fire and sh-t! What you want us to do!?"

"Just shoot the mutha-f'r," the thug's colleague next to him responds, not wishing to be burned alive, "Put a bullet in his mutha-f'n face!" Now turning towards Jack and raising his handgun, the thug then adds. "Lights out mutha-f'r!"

Jack frowns to himself, disappointed but not surprised. He begins his advance...
If possible, Jack will move between the two men and punch the wiseguy first. If he can't get up to them, Jack will lob a huge glob of hellfire at him instead.

[Remnant's Melee attack, DC 12*, d20+5=Natural 20, Critical Hit!, Automatic KO vs Minion]
* flat-footed
Before the two thugs can even think about using their guns, Remnant is already on them! The possessed man quickly lands a blow that not only connects to one of the thugs' jaws, but does so with such an explosive force that it sends the man flying up against the wall behind him. Just like that, it's "Lights Out!" for Thug #1.

The other thug shows no signs of being a hero. He covers the flaming madman with his pistol, glances down at his smoldering comrade, and then begins to beat-feet northwards. Within moments, he is nearly gone from view.
Run action (away from Remnant) for the thug.

Remnant spares a glance at the fleeing man, How typical. he thinks to himself, and launches a blast of Hellfire after the thug before descending into the laundry room.
Hellfire Blast at the fleeing thug (if he's out of range then just launch in his direction, more of a "and don't come back!" than anything else) and move down the stairs.

A standard "Ranged" power works at a distance with a range increment of (rank × 10 feet) and a maximum range of ten increments. So a ranged rank 10 power (your hellblast) has a range increment of 100 feet and a maximum range of 1,000 feet. A ranged power suffers a –2 penalty to attack rolls for every range increment past the first.

The thug Moved All Out last round so covered 120 ft. distance. You can attack at a -2 penalty.

[Remnant's Ranged attack, DC 13, d20+5*=24, Hit!]
* -2 range penalty, +2 accurate attack

[Toughness save, DC 25, d20+2=19, Failure by 5+, Automatic KO vs Minions]
Not one to leave any witnesses, Malphas convinces his host to launch a volley of infernal hellfire at the fleeing thug. The poor man drops like a stone in a pond, his leather jacket smoldering with steam as he falls to the ground. Now having dealt with the two guards atop the stairwell, the hero known as Remnant now turns to begin heading down the stairs. That's when he spots two more thugs standing about the middle of the stairwell!

The two men immediately begin to fumble about with their handguns and start to panic. "Oh Hell no!" cries one of the thugs, "Waste that sucker!" Frantically complying with his colleague's wishes, the two men then proceed to unload a couple of shots at the fire-wreathed maniac with their pistols. One of the bullets zooms by Remnant's head whilst the other one grazes his ribs. Luckily for Remnant, the wound is only superficial and is already beginning to heal. One of the benefits of being partially possessed by a demon.
There are two more thugs in the middle of the stairs. Beyond them are two additional guys and one boss. Feel free to read Muskrat's Prelude to get the gist of things. Sure it's cramped but they all fit. Two light pistol attacks on Remnant, roughly 10 ft. distance.

[Thugs' Ranged attacks, DC 17, d20+2=20, 14, 1 Hit!]

[Remnant's Toughness save, DC 18, d20+10=21, Success!]

No dmg!
Thugs 20, Gang Leader 20, Pilgrim 10, Remnant 6

Names in bold have already acted this round or are incapable of acting this round.
