Chapter One: Friday Night Firefight

Blood of Heroes - A 3rd Edition Mutants and Masterminds Campaign Setting

Earth, 2021. An alien race known as the Skree has ruled over the planet for the past 20 years, subjecting the local populace to the sadistic whims of their most brutal reign. True heroes have been all but eradicated during the Skree Invasion of 1999-2001. That or they have fallen prey to the Skree's corruptive influence and mind-altering technology. Those heroes that still survive, do so either in reclusive hiding or by battling one another in gladiator-like fashion as the Skree's amusement. Now after twenty years of servitude, a new breed of heroes are slowly starting to emerge. Fed up with the decadence that now surrounds them and fueled by their own personal desires, these young heroes have decided to try and make a stand for humanity, once and for all.

Does this new breed of heroes have what it takes to rise up against the Skree and take back their homeworld? Are they capable of breaking the shackles of oppression that bind them to a life of unwavering servitude? Time shall tell True Believers, to see whether or not these few elite individuals truly possess...the Blood of Heroes.

"You know who else might be able to help us?" Pilgrim says, "Ghede and Kongo's brother, Tough Luck. He seems to have turned over a new leaf ever since I healed him. He tried to call me from prison and warn me that this attack was imminent. I'm sure he doesn't want to see any harm come to his brothers, but he might be able to tell us how they were given their powers and how we can remove them without killing the two of them."

Jack considers Pilgrim's suggestion for a moment before responding.

"It's a possibility. Do you think Tough Luck would be amenable to something that may put him at odds with his brothers, though? Blood is often thicker than water, even holy water."

Pilgrim thinks for a moment. "Well, he already did something at odds with his brothers by warning me they were going to attack this place. I can tell him that it will help his brothers if we strip them of their powers. They keep 'em, they're going to continue down the path to perdition. They lose 'em, they just might find redemption. It can't hurt to ask him."

"Any information that he could give as to how his brothers were enchanted would be of use to me and Mr. Han," Tenebrous offers. "It will be more difficult if we have to guess."

"All right," says Pilgrim. "Let me see if I can reach him." Pilgrim heads to some place where it's not too noisy and takes out his phone, giving the prison a call and asking for Tough Luck by his proper name.

If he reaches him, Pilgrim says, "Yo, Tough Luck, this is Pilgrim. Thanks for the warning, man. It came just in the nick of time to keep any civilians from getting hurt. I don't know how you feel about this, but your old homeys are now in police custody, including your brothers Ghede and Kongo. The good news is that they are all just arrested, not killed or badly injured. But the cops don't know what to do with your brothers, with all that mojo they got going on. I know it's a lot to ask, but I was wondering if you could help us with that, tell us how they got turned into monsters. You could be helping them as well if you tell us. If they stay monsters, they'll probably keep acting like it and head on down the path to perdition. If we can strip them of that evil magic, they might get a chance to turn around just like you and I have done and make a better life for themselves."
Diplomacy check.
Do mobile phones still work after the S'Kree invasion? If not, Pilgrim heads indoors to use a landline.

The End

Post by Eanwulf » Mon May 06, 2013 3:32 am

Going to wrap this chapter up with a summary. Flavor post at the end if you wish, but otherwise, I'm going to move ahead to a new Chapter. Glad to have you all back!

@Muskrat: Mobile phones exist. The S'kree allowed a limited number of private satellites to be launched in order to establish global communications. Think of them like the internet. Specific phrases or keywords will probably get flagged and processed later by specialists. The more important the phrase/word the quicker the response time of said inquiry. Most Supers these days aren't at a level such as yourselves and if so, try to remain low-profile to avoid being "recruited" to the Games or possibly even rounded up for "reeducation". Land line or cell, it's all the same. Big Brother is most likely watching.

Luckily, the S'kree seem to be busy with other things currently.

Oops no spoilers :P
Tough Luck proves to be more than a little resistant to the notion of divulging any secrets about how Ghede and Kongo were made to be the way that they are. It's almost as if he is scared of something or someone. Still however, time spent with the man proves fruitful enough and he ultimately relents to tell all he knows about his two brothers. The young thug seems to have taken a liking to Pilgrim and also seems most interested in the paths of seeking salvation and redemption with the Lord. Once more, a hint of fear sorely evident in the sparking of this emotion.

As for the notion of contacting Esmeralda. The leader of La Mancha is going to be a hard one to find, though the gang's local hideout isn't. Still however, having just beaten up their top lieutenant (D.Q.) and several number of the crew "might" prove to be nettlesome if at least some time isn't given to let the Latino Vigilantes cool down.
