Chapter 2a: Hell Up In Harlem

Blood of Heroes - A 3rd Edition Mutants and Masterminds Campaign Setting

Earth, 2021. An alien race known as the Skree has ruled over the planet for the past 20 years, subjecting the local populace to the sadistic whims of their most brutal reign. True heroes have been all but eradicated during the Skree Invasion of 1999-2001. That or they have fallen prey to the Skree's corruptive influence and mind-altering technology. Those heroes that still survive, do so either in reclusive hiding or by battling one another in gladiator-like fashion as the Skree's amusement. Now after twenty years of servitude, a new breed of heroes are slowly starting to emerge. Fed up with the decadence that now surrounds them and fueled by their own personal desires, these young heroes have decided to try and make a stand for humanity, once and for all.

Does this new breed of heroes have what it takes to rise up against the Skree and take back their homeworld? Are they capable of breaking the shackles of oppression that bind them to a life of unwavering servitude? Time shall tell True Believers, to see whether or not these few elite individuals truly possess...the Blood of Heroes.

"I think we should rip out the sheet rock around the safe and then carry the entire box out of here. It'll be heavy but if we can get it out of sight quickly we can get to the alley or even a sewer and then call for a ride home from a safe place." If Ookami agrees he directs him to go after the wall to the right of the safe and below it while Tiger works on the left and above it.

Ookami nods and swipes at the indicated portion of the wall, keeping an eye on the dogs to make sure they behave.

Ookami and Raging Tiger set themselves upon the task of breaking through the kitchen wall of Tough Luck's apartment. The work is tedious, though relatively easy for a genetically-engineered super-soldier and highly-trained martial artist to complete. The sound of pounding walls, crumbling brick, and splintering wood only pale in comparison to the thunderous echoes of Cobalt's rampage nearby. In time, the two heroes successfully manage to pry free the wall-safe from its protective recess and now stand in T.L.'s kitchen covered in the sweat and grimy residue of their endeavors. Panting nearby are four large rottweilers, each speckled with powdered debris atop their broad inquisitive heads and bodies.

Holding the safe securely in his paws, Ookami stands ready to exit the building.
150 lbs. isn't terribly much for one of Ookami's size and strength to carry alone.
Meanwhile, north of the two heroes' position, Cobalt opts to try and finish destroying the drug lab he has already ravaged so severely. The large blue brute smashes everything and kicks anything in his path that appears to be drug-lab-related; all the time being shot at or bum-rushed by ignorant goons. In time, the hulking avenger realizes (a little too late) that 'crack' isn't the only drug of choice manufactured here within the building! A random burst of SMM's rounds ricochets off Cobalt's armored hide and penetrates the outer layers of a fuel container belonging to what appears to be some form of Meth Lab. The acrid smells of ammonia and other chemicals reaches our hero's nose JUST as the stray gunshots penetrate the tank and ignite its contents!

*WHHHOOOOOOMMMM!!!*

Ookami and Tiger pause to hunker down and skitter themselves to a halt in the middle of the street below as the top three levels of the abandoned lumber mill to the north explode. A giant pillar of flame erupts from the center of the building, illuminating the night sky and the presence of three or more helicopters. Another violent explosion quickly expels Cobalt's massive frame from the premises; his giant blue hide flung out across the street and through the sides of a neighboring laundromat. Pausing to verify that the thing is indeed their companion's body, Tiger and Ookami spin about to see what is making the noise behind them!

The four guard dogs seem to be following our heroes. They now shiver frantically with panic at the explosion and begin to whimper loudly shortly thereafter. It's quite the pitiful sight to behold!

Meanwhile, the top three floors of the crackhouse continue to burn and crackle with flame. Several portions of the upper stories eventually crumble and collapse, giving way to the structural damage that was inflicted upon them by the severe beating taken. In the nearby distance, numerous sirens can be heard. Approaching the neighborhood are several fire trucks and ambulances, as well as a LOT of police cars.
FYI something like this is BOUND to draw the S'kree's attention, should the humans be unable to quell the flames. You might want to get out of here and try to find Cobalt ;)

Ookami whistles softly at the damage Cobalt managed to cause, the turns to comfort the dogs. He then turns to Tiger, "I guess we have some new friends. Don't want to leave them." He moves away from the destruction quickly, but with confidence so the dogs will be less scared... and of course, trying to stay out of sight from the public.

Cobalt rips through the drug lab tossing work tables at gang members as easy as one would toss salt over their shoulder. All the while they are spraying him with bullets and its only pissing him off more. Still he focuses his rage on the task at hand or risk becoming little more than a tempest of destruction. Coming upon one of the final work tables there is flasks and containers on it with chemicals with a strange smell. Smashing the table quickly mixes chemicals starting a fire which then quickly explodes with intense heat. The blast flings Cobalt and he see's himself hurtling towards a wall before he see's nothing but black.

Just to move things along. Our other group is pretty much finished, so let's play catchup.
Raging Tiger follows Ookami's lead, chuckling softly at the four new admirers that they've somehow managed to pick up as he goes. "I hope Old Man Fowler doesn't have a policy against pets..." the man muses. Tiger then blushes beneath his mask and quickly adds, "Oops! Sorry bud..."

The police and medical teams arriving on the scene do what they can to try and start sorting out the casualties caused by Cobalt's and the members of SMM's little foray. As they do so, the fire brigade arrives and quickly sets up ladders and begins to spray down the burning crackhouse as best they can.

Ookami and Raging Tiger make their way across the street with safe and dogs in tow. The path Cobalt created through the side of the local laundromat is an easy one to follow. In time, the two heroes find one semi-unconscious 'Luke' lying amidst a pile of cratered rubble.

"Ughnnn..."

Ookami sets the safe down and moves to check out Luke, making sure he's alright. He yips to the dogs that he's a friend, making sure they don't try to attack him.

The four rottweilers, still jittery and panicked, comply with Ookami's wishes and out of their confusion, rush up to Luke and begin licking him repeatedly about the face and arms.

Luke is having the strangest dream that he is a giant ice cream cone when he snaps too surrounded by big dogs all licking his face. "Ughhhh....ahhhhhh!" Trying to scramble up he looks around . Spotting his two friends he scratches all the dogs behind their ears to make nice. " We need to get out of here now. This is going to bring unwanted attention."
Propose we get the heck back to our meeting spot Pronto.

"Yup, with all the ground cover and the helicopters the sewers are our best bet. Got to get out here before the Sk'ree show up. Come on there was a grate in the alley behind this place."

Tiger leads the way. "We'll have to help the dogs down but we can do it if we hurry. I'll lead the way, Luke you take the safe and Ookami can help the dogs. Guess the Count is going to get a little more than he bargained for back at his place between the sewer smell and the dogs." The rasping laugh flares up again.
