Chapter 2c: A Ritual at Midnight

Blood of Heroes - A 3rd Edition Mutants and Masterminds Campaign Setting

Earth, 2021. An alien race known as the Skree has ruled over the planet for the past 20 years, subjecting the local populace to the sadistic whims of their most brutal reign. True heroes have been all but eradicated during the Skree Invasion of 1999-2001. That or they have fallen prey to the Skree's corruptive influence and mind-altering technology. Those heroes that still survive, do so either in reclusive hiding or by battling one another in gladiator-like fashion as the Skree's amusement. Now after twenty years of servitude, a new breed of heroes are slowly starting to emerge. Fed up with the decadence that now surrounds them and fueled by their own personal desires, these young heroes have decided to try and make a stand for humanity, once and for all.

Does this new breed of heroes have what it takes to rise up against the Skree and take back their homeworld? Are they capable of breaking the shackles of oppression that bind them to a life of unwavering servitude? Time shall tell True Believers, to see whether or not these few elite individuals truly possess...the Blood of Heroes.

Chapter 2c: A Ritual at Midnight

Post by Eanwulf » Tue Jul 09, 2013 8:23 am

Tuesday, April 6th, 2021, Roughly 12:00 a.m.
In the Middle of the Hoboken Cemetery
Approximately 47 degrees Fahrenheit, Very Steady Breeze and Cloudy

The wind whips about our heroes wildly as they stand gathered amidst the headstones and mausoleums of the Hoboken Cemetery. Two hideous-looking statuesque figures (Kongo & Ghede) stand silently rigid beneath the muddled darkness and moonlight. Having been rendered inert by Mr. Han's magic, the two villains now wait motionless for our heroes to begin with their ritual.

An eerie silence befalls the cemetery, the proverbial clock striking midnight and prompting Mr. Han into motion. The elderly man carefully strikes the side of a small singing bowl placed upon one of the headstones beside him and proceeds to chant and murmur the spell needed to initiate the ritual. As his chanting continues, a wispy fog-like substance begins to climb its way from beneath the earth and settles around and upon Mr. Han's tiny frame.
To the more perceptive of individuals (6 or more actual Ranks in Perception) the fog looks vaguely humanoid in shape, as if it were a collective gathering of souls harnessed from the nearby graves.
In time, the unusual fog all but covers/surrounds Mr. Han, his face now lost to concentration. Harnessing the power needed to continue on to the next stage of the ritual; the friendly old maintenance man slowly reaches out with both his hands and sends the power surrounding him towards Lady Esmeralda.

The woman's eyes widen with disbelief as the powerful magic sent her way racks her voluptuous frame with a most sudden and unusual sensation. Nearly overwhelmed at first, the clever sorceress collects her wits about her and begins to chant as well as the preternatural power courses through her veins. The whispering sounds of a thousand voices are soon heard coming from about the graveyard as Esmeralda shapes the raw power sent to her into a more manageable manner of a spell-component.

In time, the echoing whispers slowly gain magnitude in volume, some of which even managing to transform themselves into the violent howls and cries of vengeance - vengeance from those whom were sent here to the graveyard by the gang Sex, Money, Murder and its two currently hapless leaders.

A spine-chilling rattling sound is eventually heard, not unlike that of a rattlesnake or pair of maracas being shaken from out of nowhere, its own tune and rhythm conjoining the already present chorus of gathered souls. Before long, the two helpless villains (Kongo & Ghede) are outlined in the shimmering of a dark and murky magic; its form and shape resembling that of two serpentine-like figures coiling themselves about them. It is here that Count Tenebrous enters with his part of the ritual.

The good Count beckons Lady Esmeralda to sway the flow of energy unto his direction. Complying with the mage's wishes, Esmeralda does so. The Count then musters forth all his might and sends the harnessed power of the gathered spirits towards the direction of the two spectral serpents. Lashing out violently, the two Dark Loa struggle and fight to resist the three wizards' combined power; their gigantic heads snapping out towards the spell upon several occasions. Ultimately however, they can not and the two spirits are blasted into oblivion by a barrage of harnessed souls.

Kongo and Ghede sweat profusely, their eyes widening with fear and anguish as Mr. Han's ritual works like it is supposed to. With the two Dark Loa now banished and removed from their bodies the two villains are bathed in a blinding show of light, their unholy powers being stripped away by the process. When all is said and done, the two men once more resemble their normal selves and collapse powerlessly to the ground; as do the three wizards.

The ritual has been completed and was a success!
Congratulations! Job well done! Time to move along. Flavor post as needed and I just need to add one more thing at the end of our ritual before moving on and bringing Hayabusa into the group.

Ookami sits and watches the ritual quietly, suddenly very glad that he decided to trust the two men that are obviously much stronger than they appear.

The ritual ends and the three magic users collapse, their work done. Jack rushes forward to make sure that they're uninjured.

"Hey are you guys alright?"

Count Tenebrous, in his full working clothes, including his flowing cape, collapses once the ritual is completed. When Jack approaches, his first response is a groan, followed by some words spoken so low as to be almost intelligible. But he's alive, that's for certain. And he doesn't appear to be injured.

A few moments later, the sorcerer rolls over onto his back and looks up at the sky. "That was a great deal of power we harnessed," he says weakly. "More than I expected, actually." He tries to raise his head, only partially successfully. "But I have suffered no permanent injuries. Are Mr. Han and Esmeralda okay?"

Pilgrim watches the whole ritual uneasily, since the magicians are obviously dealing with dark magic. He reminds himself that these are good people, undoing evil magics that have been used to harm others, but that does not wholly remove the sense of unease he feels. He breaths a sigh of relief when the spell is finally over, but follows upon Jack's heels to make sure his friends are OK.

In response to Nikolai's question, Pilgrim says, "Yeah, I think so--they just seem like they're wiped out, same as you." He looks over at Ghede and Kongo. "And now we can hand these two over to the police, who should be able to keep them locked up now."
Are we going to get a chance to RP out Jack and Pilgrim's visit to the prison to interview Danielle and the other locked up members of La Mancha to see if they should be released?

Upon mention of Ghede and Kongo Jack's face takes on a wicked grin, the faint sheen of hellfire rimming his eyes.

"I'm sure they'll have a lot to talk about with the other inmates now that they're normal mortals as well."

Originally I thought about roleplaying the chat with D.Q. but there is no real need to in all honesty. The entire affair was summarized in a previous post OOC, should you have missed it.

Overall, I want to speed things up to another episode overall. Beating Kongo and Ghede, then dealing with them the main things needed to have been overcome before moving on to bigger and better things and our formerly discontinued game previously.

Throw in the addition of Hayabusa and a need to unify everyone into one mass group only adding to the reasoning behind forgoing such roleplay.

Hopefully you're not too terribly disappointed :(
Slowly, Mr. Han reaches up with one of his hands and places it upon the top of a headstone. The frail-looking man then proceeds to pull himself upwards. Now standing, he pants heavily. A feeble smile creeps across his face as he does so. "Hai!" proclaims the weary wizard rather happily, though tired. "Mr. Han alright..."

"As am I..." adds Lady Esmeralda, hovering herself into the air just above the ground. The gorgeous woman's face is slightly marred by lines of fatigue.

Mr. Han surveys the scene with great admiration, then strikes the singing bowl one more time and begins to pray for those that aided him with the ritual, souls of the departed included. When all is said and done, the haggard man motions for Old Man Fowler to deal with Kongo and Ghede.

"Right!" exclaims Fowler with great enthusiasm, "Time to show these two chuckleheadz the inside of a nice warm prison cell!" The eager man then begins to hoist the two crooks up into the air by the scruffs of their neck like they were baby kittens. "C'mon you two lunkheadz!" jibes Fowler as he puffs on his cigar, "Time to pay the piper!"

Having rid Kongo and Ghede of their powers, the group pauses to gather their belongings and to make sure that all are alright before making preparations to return back home. A renewed sense of pride and purpose seems to gleam within Mr. Han's eyes as he admires his ritual's success. The old man even goes so far as to thank everyone for their assistance. "You do Mr. Han great honor my friends! He happy we able to remove such evil from the world. We should head back home and discuss how we can do more good!"
Time to wind things up and move along. Post as you see fit, and I can fill in the blanks as need be.

Ookami laughs at the landlord's gruff manner as he heads back to the apartments. He checks on the rottweilers before going to bed.

Jack is happy to have helped in the preparation of the ritual and seemingly more peaceful, Malphas being content to have temporarily fulfilled his 'divine' purpose to punish the wicked.

Jack spends the rest of the evening with the other heroes he's come to know as his friends.

Count Tenebrous remains quiet and reverent during Mr. Han's prayers. And when they are done, he magically swaps back to his street clothes, and walks back to the apartment complex with the others. It's been a long, draining evening, and he's happy to spend the rest of it back in his apartment enjoying the company of his new friends.
