FAQ: Day Job Forum

Post by Shurijo » Wed Mar 28, 2012 4:21 am

Note, to any Admin, once the Day Job Forum has been created, please move this thread to that forum. Thanks - shurijo

The Pathfinder Society Organized Play Rules

Not every Pathfinder works for the Society full time. Some are trained artisans, professionals, or performers and earn extra gold on the side, between missions. During these times, you can attempt a Craft, Perform, or Profession skill check to see how much extra money you earn—this is called a Day Job check. In the Pathfinder Society campaign, you may make one Day Job check after the end of each adventure. Certain Vanities (see the Pathfinder Society Field Guide) allow you to further modify your Day Job rolls, or even let you use skill ranks from other, more specialized skills like Heal or Sleight of Hand.

Permanent bonuses such as equipment, feats, racial bonuses, and traits effect your Day Job check as they would any check of the rolled skill, but temporary bonuses such as those granted by magical effects do not contribute, as the duration over which the Day Job check is made is undefined and represents a longer amount of time than a spell's duration would permit the bonus to remain. You cannot take 10 or take 20 on a Day Job check, nor can you aid another.

Code: Select all

DC Result GP Award
 5 1 gp
10 5 gp
15 10 gp
20 20 gp
25 50 gp
30 75 gp
35 100 gp
40 150 gp
You can also spend your Prestige Points to purchase Vanities-Business or properties (pg 60, PFS Field Guild) to buy business such as taverns, theater, shops, stores, etc. or properties such as farmstead, ship, or caravan. These add circumstance bonuses to your day job checks.

Sometimes you can use alternative skills for day jobs. For example, if you purchase a caravan (5 PP), you can use Diplomacy for using it as an above-the-board merchant, use Bluff if you want to use it for smuggling, or use Intimidate if you want a well guarded caravan and use a show of force.

The Role Play

After each scenario is complete, your GM will instruct you to post a day job post to your personal "storefront" thread. This thread will be where all of the between-the-games RP is conducted. This RP isn't managed by the GM, so it's "freeform" RP :) Please be respectful of each other.

As a character, you can feel free to stop by to visit and sample the wares of fellow characters. Even non-PFSOP players can create a temporary character or other PFSOP characters that you haven't played with can stop by your storefront.

Not all day jobs could have a storefront, for example, if you're using your Slight of Hand to pickpockets the streets of Absalom, then you wouldn't want to advertise that, but you could use the thread to role play pickpocketing something and then fencing it for the coins. Along the way, you might make some contacts that could lead to to gain an invite to a thieves guild (once you purchase that via Prestige Points).

You should include the name of your character in the thread's title and think of a clever name for your storefront. Your character may not actually own a store (which you can purchase using your Prestige Points), so think of that name as your personal title/business cards. Some skilled characters, such as alchemists could create their wares and sell them on the street or find an alchemist shop and sell the items to them for resale.

You can contribute as much, or as little, role play as you like. You can also feel free to stop by other character's shops and say hi. Also, events which happen in these thread occur out of game context, so if your RP session goes on even during the start of your next scenario then that's still okay.

Events which take place here cannot gain you any extra XP, gold (other than the GMs day job roll check), or items. So at the end of the day, when you return to another scenario, you'll have gained only the amount of gold which you earned via your day job check.
