Cook and Quartermaster

Ambrose "Fishguts" Kroop (male human)
Kroop is a large, some would say fat, man, weighing well over 200 pounds and standing only 5 feet tall. He exudes an air of neglect, perhaps even despair, from the bushy tufts of black hair behind his ears, to his rotting teeth, to the stains on his filthy apron. He walks with a wallowing waddle, particularly when drunk, but is capable of surprising acts of strength. Kroop talks with a thick Shackles accent, which some people find hard to follow.

Kroop loves chickens. Kroop's favorite bird, a large black cockerel named Black-Hearted Bezebel, which often perches on the cook's shoulder and even talks to him, or so Kroop occasionally drunkenly claims. Mug after mug, and Toruk and Kroop are laughing, spinning yarns and telling tales.

Image
Cut-Throat Grok (female half orc)
Cut-Throat Grok is the Wormwood's quartermaster, a no-nonsense character with a huge scar across her neck. Growing up among pirates is tough for anyone unusual, and Grok got her scar fighting a gang of cutthroats in the alleys of Port Peril who robbed her and left her for dead when she was only 11 years old. Grok is a reedy half-orc who favors dark clothing. She carries a notched greataxe and an array of throwing axes hangs from her belt. Grok frequently grins toothily, and uses appalling curse words, particularly when drunk. Grok is renowned for being tough, and she doesn't suffer fools, but she is a close friend of Ambrose Kroop, whom she sees as someone who's had even worse luck than she's had.

Grok is usually found in the quartermaster's store (area A9) during the day. In the evenings, she locks the store and carouses on deck, drinking and gambling with the other pirates before returning to her cabin (area A7) to sleep it off.

Name: Ayane "Aya" Runa
Race: Kitsune
Gender: Female
Class: Bard

Hair: Chestnut
Skin: Tanned
Eyes: Amber
Height: 5'2"
Weight: 97
Age: 16

Physical Description: The kitsune is petite, rather short with a slim build. Most of the time she appears to be a human girl with tanned skin, chestnut hair, amber eyes and a dark, vertical mark on each cheek.

History: Ayane was raised by her father Nonek Runa in Parley Point and never knew her mother who has appeared for only a short time in her father's life, just long enough to give birth to Ayane and vanish as quickly as she had appeared. According to her father, he met a young red-haired woman that always had a smile on her lips in a tavern and was quite charming to the captain of a small fishing vessel. She claimed to come from the Ushinawa Isles and was travelling the Shackles. The affair was short and she left as quickly and without a trace as she had appeared to the man. Although he tried to find her it was in vain because everyone did not recall the woman other when she was with him. Of course he realized that she was a kitsune as the only physical remainder of her presence was the child she left behind and in his care. His daughter's appearance alone, the coat of auburn fur, pointy ears and general fox-like appearance was a dead giveaway. And although he pondered not to raise the child he still knew that it was his and being the only thing left from his love he decided not to abandon the infant; he gave the kitsune child her mother's name.
She grew quickly and soon enough was able to change into human form. And although she showed little interest in her father's fishing business, she still delighted the three-man crew (including her father) of her father's vessel with songs and her general cheerful personality. However, just a few years ago the vessel did not return from the sea and did not do so in the following months and no one had seen it either, although it was not uncommone for a ship to be away for many weeks. For a while Ayane pondered whether to continue and wait or to search for him and leave everything else behind.
So several weeks ago she brought her other affairs in order, sold almost all of the family's belongings and gave their small house to a friend and left, not only for the search but also to find an adventure to bring back home.

Motivations: While looking for her parents, one whom she never knew and one she loves and is apparently lost at sea, is one part of her search she intends to look for her own adventure on a journey through the Shackles on her way to the South-Western isles. There's thousands of tales other people went through that can be told but it is the one that has been experienced by herself that brings out the most passionate performance.

Name: Davok Seabeard
Race: Human
Gender: Male
Class: Corsair

Hair: Black
Skin: Tanned
Eyes: Grey
Height: 6'4"
Weight: 220
Age: 22

Physical Description: Large muscular man. Long black hair with grey eyes. He has a beard. His most distinguishing feature is the armor he wears on a ship.

History: Son of the famous pirate Captain Seabeard. Boarded his mothers ship put the men to the sword and the crew raped the women. His mother was particularly attractive and the captain took her for himself. He kept her on as his personal toy for months until he learned she was pregnant. Rather than kill her he dumped her off at a port and set sail. His mother was too kind hearted to strangle the babe after birth and raised him. She was regulated to a life of labor since no one wanted a bastard as a son. When the boy was 16 he figured the best thing he could do for his mother was leave, she was still attractive and would get a husband that will hopefully take care of her. He said his goodbyes and left never to bother her again. He made his way to the docks and worked with any ship that would let him, offers were few but sailors are more forgiving than most people about ones background.

Motivations: He's a fatalist. Born with something to prove. Feels the only real value one can have on his life is the legacy he leaves behind. His father did nothing for him and was a horrible person, but everyone knew him and his reputation lives on. He also died on the sea and knows piracy and sailing are not professions you tend to grow old on.

New Sailors From Rickety's Squibs

Jassah Salekka (Human Male)
Short dark hair, moustache - prefers a boarding axe in combat - rather short but brawny - was born on a ship - prefers to be on a ship - feels uneasy on land - spent almost his entire life on different ships - likes good food.

Tainsa (Male GNome)
Tainsa has straight red hair and bright grey eyes, and large ears. He has been staying at Rickety's for about a year. However, the hammer he's really good with is not one made for carpentry but for combat. So when the officers of the Besmara's Banshee he decided to join them after he saw how well the crew fought against the invading wasps and the naga, even going out of their way to run some errands for Rickety was there. Not every pirate that has come to squibbing venture to have their ship overhauled. He's been having doubts about his carpentry work for a bit now as he's strong and enduring but the "honest" work hasn't really been something he wants to do. And if things go bad he assumes that Rickety will still have a spot for him. He prefers a warhammer in a fight. The middle-aged gnome is a bit of a a pack-rat, and carries a satchel of random junk. You can never know when you need something.

Eight-Fingered Bob (Male Human)
The man had his name from his unfortunate condition, as two fingers are missing from his left hand. That hasn't stopped him from doing much of anything. He's skinny, a bit too skinny, and likes to keep his hair cut real sort so the lice don't have as much to hold onto. He is a pro at Nin Pins which he enjoys (and brings a set with him onto the ship). After seeing your heroics on the beach he signed right up with your crew as a swab.

Henric Durriken (Human Male)
Henric is a young Varisian boy of seventeen that hails from Riddleport, the same city that Toruk grew up in. Left behind from another ships makeover roughly two years ago, Henric has taken up residence at Rickety Squibs doing odd jobs. A combination of his eagerness to leave and Toruk's interest in his origin, brought them together as if by fate. Rickety always told the boy he was welcome to leave whenever he saw fit, with the only disclaimer being the goings on at this particular port did not exist. Perhaps the crew of the Besmara's Banshee appealed to Henric as they were not perceived as the normal run of the mill vile pirates you usually encounter. Toruk, with Kroop's approval have agreed to take the boy on as an apprentice cook, much like the Undine was on The Man's Promise.

Toruk also notes that he feels Durriken is a false last name, not something uncommon from a Varisian who may be hiding from a family names reputation. To date he has never inquired with the boy on this topic...

Celaser Mora (Female Elf scholar)
Celaser is willowy, with thin silver hair and hazel eyes. Celaser seeks to discover why she keeps having the same dream. Coming from a merchant family, Celaser was on the sea very early in her life. But as far as she can remember she always had a recurring dream of a burning skull that always drew her to the Inner Sea. So far she cannot recall if it even was supposed to be her own or even it was an elvish skull, but it was surrounded by fire and bones upon an endless ocean. Since her family only rarely made it into the Inner Sea, the elf left her family behind as soon as she was old enough, armed with as much knowledge as she had in her and could carry in scrolls and books, she joined another merchants crew as a quartermaster that carried her into the Shackles every now and then but mostly along its fringes. A chance encounter with some privateers left her ship severely damaged and subsequently carried her to Rickety's Squibs. However, as soon as the ship was repaired and left, ignoring that some of his crew was still on shore as the captain was too eager to leave the Shackles behind. Some of the crew either found jobs or a way away on other ships, others stayed and so did Celaser as a bookkeeper for Rickety. After some time and with her number of former friends dwindling down the elf got some urge to depart as well. Right at that time the Besmara's Banshee was the next to leave Rickety's. So far Celaser considers the departure as a trip to another location, maybe the next stone in the pond to step on. And who knows what'll happen sooner or later again.

The elf wears modest and travel-stained garments in rather subdued colors and carries a quarterstaff.

Name: Gragol Saltliver
Race: Dwarf
Gender: Male
Class: Corsair

Hair: Bald
Skin: Dark Tanned with rough complextion
Eyes: Brown
Height: 4'4"
Weight: 230
Age: 60

Physical Description: Gragol is quite tall, for a Dwarf, and is a bit more athletic rather than stocky. He has a bald head and a long scraggly beard that is about 1 foot long and a pointy mustache that is just as long and sticks straight out from either side of his head. Like most Dwarves his nose is large but is also pointy. He wears a long armored coat that is only an inch from reaching the ground and is easily removed if he falls overboard. Always within arms reach he has his Urgrosh which serves both as a deadly weapon and a versatile tool.

History: Most of Gragol's life has been spent at sea as a sailor for hire. He used to belong to another group of pirates but was chased off the ship when he couldn't stay sober for any longer than a few hours. For the past year or so he has spent his time working on a fishing vessel which was raided by the Besmara's Banshee.

Motivations: The Corsair blood that courses through his veins means he is a pirate through and through. He wants nothing more than to be a part of the deadliest pirate crew the oceans have ever seen. Hard work is something Gragol does well and has no problem being the one to get his hand dirty.

New Sailors from the Wavedancer

Ryland 'Vicious' Tindall - Swab - male human - Formerly a sailor on the Waverunner, he joined the crew to avoid walking the plank. He's blood thirsty and always causing trouble. He may be more trouble than he's worth.

Merton 'Three-Teeth' Keats - Swab - male dwarf - This dwarf has a beard down to his chest, but only three teeth in his mouth. The others have rotted out from lack of care, but a few were focibily removed in a rather brutal bar brawl in Port Peril years ago.

Tena 'Corsair' Gloom - Swab - female half elf - This comely half elf has a brutal scar on her neck thatn dips down between her clevage. She doesn't talk about it, and anyone that asks generally get's a swift kick to the crotch.

Grommet - Swab - male gnome - A green haired gnome, he's known for liking to take swims while the ship is sailing, using ropes to secure himself to the stern of the ship. A bit loose brained, he can cause a bit of trouble but only cause he doesn't think before he acts.

Name: Meri Tidecaller
Race: Merfolk
Gender: Female
Class: Sorcerer (Mutated Bloodline - Elemental [Air])

Hair: Light Auburn
Skin: Light
Eyes: Jade
Length: 6' 4"
Weight: 185 lbs
Age: 18

Motivations: Find her sister, and have a blast exploring the world while she's doing it!

Personality: Meri usually has an upbeat, happy demeanor. The disappearance of her sister has dampened her spirit a bit, but she remains optimistic that eventually everything will work out. It is this confidence that lets her weather a lot of rough treatment, as she is determined to let nothing stand in her way of finding her kin. Usually, unless interacting with someone she dislikes, she has a friendly smile on her face. Once enraged enough to take action, however, it is difficult to placate her. There is no overkill. There is only "Open fire!" and "I need to rest 8 hours."

In her free time, she like to sing merfolk classics as "Under the Sea", "Flipper Girl", and "Fins of Fury". She is also fascinated by land-based culture and alcohol (her tribe didn't have any booze), and wants to explore the world.

Physical Description: This 18 years old aquatic beauty has light skin with clear complexion. Well, her upper half is anyways. A clutch of flowers or other colorful plants typically adorns her long, shiny auburn hair. It frames her friendly, emerald eyes as she smiles at whomever she is speaking with (most of the time). She likes to wear decorative, silvery metal bands around her arms, along with a golden necklace. On her upper body, she affixes a pair of colorful clams to her plentiful chest. The clams match the coloration of her tail.

For her bottom half, a belt made of golden links adorns where her skin becomes scales. Those scales are a bright aqua hue, and that only changes at the fin of her tail. The fin itself is mostly jade colored with some purple interspersed, and then gradually becomes yellow, and then blue, and then back to purple. It is quite colorful.

Meri's total length is 6ft 4 inches, and she weighs a healthy 185 lbs.

History: Meri Tidecaller has spent all 18 birthdays of her life under the calming waves of the ocean (well, except those times spent sunbathing on rocks above the waves). She has had a happy and carefree life, hunting and playing with her fellow merfolk, and especially her sister, Triss. They were close and inseparable, and looked fairly similar except for the fact that Triss has blonde hair. The two even shared the same wanderlust (and worship Desna). Even though they were happy with their tribe, and life was easy except for the occasional sahuagin raid (and boy does Meri hate Sahuagin), Meri and Triss often wondered about the civilizations above the ocean. What kinds of people, cultures, and adventures happened up there? Of course there is plenty of adventure in the deep as well, but the sisters often talked about taking a lengthy journey topside someday.

One day, Triss wandered far afield to search for some pearls, and never returned. Meri searched and searched, calling out, singing, but she never found any trace of her sister except for a single scale from Triss's tail. Crying, she swam to the seers and oracles of her tribe, and even to those of their triton neighbors. But all they were able to tell her is that her sister had been taken by some evil human pirate the area known as the Shackles. Details are sparse, and all she knows is that the pirate is some sort of lord, and commands a large armada. Determined to find and rescue her sister, Meri set out with nothing but a dagger and a few pearls in her satchel to barter with.

After a few weeks of swimming, and occasionally conversing with people she encountered on the shore (to get directions to a large settlement in the Shackles, and to learn what a Pirate is), she finally arrived at Port Peril. She slithered onto the shore, and into town, her appearance earning her many stares. A bit naïve, she had no idea what was in store for her. Meri just planned to use her melodic voice to sing sea epics and make friends, and hopefully gather some clues regarding Triss. She entered a tavern named the Formidably Maid, and was immediately the center of attention! Thinking this was good fortune, she began singing and trying to make friends. It was apparently working, as people were at least buying her some sort of beverage. She tried it, and was immediately struck by how STRONG it was! It was like getting punched, but it was also...pleasant. Her new "friends" kept buying her more, and she was happy to keep drinking. She has never had this "rum" before (indeed, alcohol was not a thing in her tribe), barely an hour after she arrived, everything went black.

Luckily, Meri didn't get press-ganged or anything. That would've been a horrible start to her adventures on land!

Name: Flavinia "Vinnie" Calutio
Race: Human
Gender: Female
Class: Sorcerer (Aquatic Bloodline)

Hair: Blonde
Skin: Light
Eyes: Blue
Length: 5' 4"
Weight: 140 lbs
Age: 21

Pronounced Fla-Vin-ia, most just call her Vinnie.

Lithe, scrawny and without much in the way of curves, Flavinia might easily pass for a young boy, though her heart shaped face, confident "look at me!" stride and typically red colored lips, and her "pirate doesn't have to mean uncultivated" attitude, tends to give her way.

Her garb is practical, mostly, sturdy boots, the most robust trousers available in Port Peril and a loose-fitting white shirt. Belts to carry items easily accessible on her person, a red sash and a bandanna of the same style to add some color. She also likes to prance around in a black longcoat and matching tricorn and gloves. Due to prestigitation, her apparel is always immaculately clean and well groomed. She doesn't much do jewelry, save for a golden pendant she claims to be part of her first share of plunder.

She is high spirited and sassy with a devil may care attitude and a way of behaving when out of danger suggesting that she might be reckless and foolhardy. Loves nothing more than to one-up others, and never shut up about if she can upstage men at things they didn’t think a “scrawny lass” could compete with. Likes to flirt, likes to lead men on, but keeps a strict policy of never hooking up with crewmates (and sometimes makes them wonder if she prefers girls), while she works as hard as the next sailor (or at least, gets as much work done as the next sailor, maybe a little bit more, tends to use magic though, so she probably doesn’t really work as hard), she somehow seems to have a an incurable appetite for stories and tall tales, having quite a few of those to tell herself, usually heavily exaggerated and embellished (all for dramatic appeal of course, no self-aggrandizing motives, no, no. Not at all, everything is true, as if a proper pirate would ever lie or make anything up as she goes.).

Flavinia is from Port Peril, her parents were entertainers who had struck it rich, old whitebeard said they’d also doubled as thieves when they didn’t do any acrobatic shows and had made off with the crown jewels of Taldor, or Cheliax or..well old whitebeard was either drunk or loudly snoring, and why should Flavinia care, they were dead before she got old enough to actually enjoy whatever wealth her parents had (which she did not get to keep after their demise.)

Mostly raised by an elder half-sister, life wasn’t all that good, but it was fun. Exploring the city, seeing the sights, narrowly missing it’s perils, mostly without noticing them as she did. Drinking up the pirate life (the classy sort that pirates tells little girls to make it seem romantic, the bad stuff were obviously just them trying to scare her). The day trouble managed to come around to make it’s long delayed acquaintance, in her early teens, the assailants learned that trying to have some fun with the pretty girl that was all alone wasn’t a particularly bright idea when it turned out that she had magic. She herself was not aware of that gift (and insists to this day that she could have fought them off with her dagger, skill to use it, and unlike them, not being drunk).

Once she had a good enough control over her newfound powers, she signed up with pirate captain Ballard “Bloodbeard” Nash with a good track record for keeping his crew alive and reasonably happy about his leadership. Above all, sailors wanted to join him, which would be the best resume a captain could ever have. Didn’t help much when they got overtaken by a Taldorian Frigate, Flavia, young and dove-eyed managed to bluff them into being the kidnapped daughter of some Chelaxian merchant prince, then released the other survivors in the middle of the night, and after a short little massacre, they had a brand new proper warship to bring back to Port Peril for refitting and hiring more crew. For a while, pirate’s life was good, best ship, best crew, and she could cast magic with a flick of her finger, meaning she got to claim privileges. Then the ship went down in a storm, Flavinia managed to swim ashore (none of the others, save for Xie the cleric were ever seen again, and ordinary humans would not be very likely to save themselves), being governess of her own island is much more boring than it sounds, and a lot more perilous (Xie was there too, but since he provided most of the meals, he was relegated to being the cook in her telling, and thus the role of governess was up for grabs).
