Book 5: Act 1 - Those Who Tarry No Longer

It is the year 2946 of the Third Age, and the lands east of the Misty Mountains are astir. From the cloud-shrouded peaks above the High Pass to the spider-infested gloom of the forest of Mirkwood, paths long-deserted are trodden once again. Busy merchants carry their wares to new markets, messengers bring tidings from foreign realms, and kings send forth armed men to extend their influence and the rule of law. Some say that a new age of freedom has begun, a time for adventure and great deeds to reclaim glories lost in long centuries of oppression and decline.

But adventures are not really things that people go out and look for. They are dangerous and rarely end well. While it is true that a handful of valiant individuals set out to make their mark on the world, for others it seems that adventure chooses them, as though it is the path they are fated to tread. They are restless warriors, curious scholars and wanderers, always eager to seek what was lost or explore what was forgotten. Ordinary people call them adventurers, and when they return successful, they call them heroes. But if they fail, no one will even remember their names...

Varuthil bows to Legolas before sitting down. "Yes, my prince, we have some experience in traveling over much of Wilderland." She looks at the two elves dressed for travel with some curiosity, but leaves it to the prince to explain their presence and his purpose.

Finn bows before the Prince of the Woodland Realm. "<Sindar> Thank you for your welcome, Prince Legolas." He switches to Westron. "I speak a little Sindar, for my father and I have worked with your Raft Elves for many years. I and my servant Tom are at your service."

Legolas folds his hand together, "I am glad to hear that Varuthil. It is said you have been wandering in the Vale for some time. With that experience, and your efforts to help the Woodman at my father's side against the Orcs last year, I have decided to call on you for a task." He looks to Finn, "You speak it well for an Edain, keep practicing. I would ask that you and your page assist me as well, as friend and traveling companion of Varuthil."

He then speaks to both of you more directly, "I have an errand to travel through Mirkwood to the West, in escort of an other, and it is my desire that you travel with me, and assist me as you may."

Varuthil eyes widened slightly in surprise before she says, "It would be an honor to accompany you, your grace. May I ask where you wish to travel to and who else we will be escorting?"

Finn is also surprised at Legolas' words. "We are honored, Prince of the Realm; such humble folk as we are have little to offer, but all that I and my page have, we put in your service."

"I am glad to have you, such experienced travelers and warriors too, for I have heard your stories and songs about your exploits. So too has our charge. Ah, here she is now, I shall let her explain more."

The door opens, after Legolas comments, as if he could see through the door and knew she was there.

She wears a gown of shimmering white and cloud-grey silks. Her face is hidden by a grey veil, but her arms are adorned with silver bracelets, and upon her finger a ring glimmers with its own inner light. She must be one of the Noldor, of whom but a few remain in Middle-earth. The pair, her and Legolas, spend a few moments greeting one another in the Ancient Tongue.

She then turns to you, her light and radiance as a Noldor of Valinor washes over you. “I am Irimë of the House of Gil-Galad. Elen sila lumenn’ omentielvo. I have been told that you shall be my escorts to the West so I might depart Middle-earth."

They speak in Quenya, simple greetings, etc. Varuthil, with Elf-Lore knows it, but Finn and Tom do not

Finn's breath catches suddenly when Irime enters the room. Her beauty rivaled all the Elves he had ever seen, even in time he spent in Rivendell that summer long ago.

He finally manages to stammer a reply, "Elen sila lumenn’ omentielvo . . . ah Elen sila thinna oennorath."

For once, Varuthil seems lost for words. She pauses while Finn makes his greeting. "Yes, we can escort you. We know Wilderland well--but I'm afraid we've never passed beyond the Misty Mountains." She looks at Legolas, wondering how far the prince intends them to escort Irime. "Your grace, we can surely take her over the Mountains and aim for Rivendell. I suspect there she will find better guides for the rest of the way to the Grey Havens."

Legolas nods, replying for the lady, quickly clearing something up. "We have arranged and escort to meet us in the High Pass and take the Lady to Rivendell. You task would end once we've met those from Rivendell."

Lady Irime smiles at Finn, "You speak Sindarn very well Finnulf Wyngard. You do your people proud in this regard." She then inhales and looks past Finn, almost through him, as if seeing something far away. "Perhaps along the road I can instruct you in some other phrases." She then turns to Legolas and in Quenya speaks once more. Legolas nods.

The Prince motions at the door, "Meet us at the gates in one hour then. We leave at once."

Finn is fairly awestruck at the compliments he receives from Lady Irime. "You do me too much honor. But to receive instruction on the road would be delightful. A correction of my language ability from you Lady would be better than a compliment from Kings."

He nods at Legolas to confirm he and Tom's willingness to leave at once, then looks to Varuthil, to see if she has more to say or is ready to depart.
