Cass thought of ways to break free, but sleep took him before he even knew it. The sun was actually high in the air when he woke. The sun had broken through the clouds, but unfortunately the hunger in his stomach reminded him of his troubles, not to mention the steel trap he was locked into. In the high grass, he was next to invisible, but he heard people talking in the distance.

"How could have have disappeared? It was muddy, where are the tracks? He couldn't have gotten out." Another man, with a deep voice answers, "Horses overran the tracks, certainly." They were talking about Cass, there was no doubt.

Cass tries to decide what would be his next move.
Rolling the cage would certainly make a lot of noise, right? And he really can't remember any spell? Not even ones he had memorized before being caught?

I never said anything about not remembering a spell ...
Cass thinks about moving the cage, but knows it would make a lot of noise. He waits and ponders.

Cass didn't think he would be able to do it. It's been too long since the last time he read his spellbook. He was taught it was very dangeous to use a spell without having it clearly imprinted in his mind. But he had to risk it. Cass raised his right hand and recited the arcane words in the lowest volume possible. Fire would make less noise than a crackling eletrical shock, but he was risking a serious burn. At least the grass was wet and burning his cover had not a big chance. He aimed the fire at the door, but his main target was the chain and the lock.

When something wet is set afire, it causes smoke. Cass either doesn't know that, or in a rush, completely forgot. He begins burning the steel, but the only thing it does is heat up the metal. The wet grass around him starts to smoke badly, making Cass cough and retch.

, he uses another spell, enveloping his hand in crackling energy and touching the chain, using a Shocking Grasp spell. He doesn't care about the burn on the tip of his index finger.

What spell? Are you still trying to burn the metal?
Cass decides he does not want to risk any further fire. Instead, he sends a shockwave of electrical force into the cage. That ends up being a problem. The electrical current shocks the cage, causing all connecting metal to transport the eletricity. Cass, seated in the cage, is immediately electrocuted. He tries to scream out in pain, but the muscles in his mouth are locked shut. Cass passes out after a few moments, his pain receeding into unconciousness.

The half-elf feels strange. He had not had time to think of anything, really, after his body was locked into stasis. The wind blows around him, but he is not in the tall grass. Instead, he looks around, the ground is black, the trees are petrified, and a black fog hovers over his head.

Cass shakes his head, takes a deep breath, and sits. He looks around trying to determine where he is.
Is he still in the cage? Is the ground still dirt?

Maybe. Cass was also touching the ground, etc, but this is fantasy, and I'm the GM. You electrocuted yourself ;)
Cass is not longer in the cage. He's laying flat on the ground. The ground is made of some sort of burnt rock and stone. It is a strange place. The air is completely dark and covered in fog. Cass cannot seen the moon, either due to the thick fog, or that fact that it is not there.

Cass stands. He looks to his hands. They should be burnt. <Am I dead?>, he thinks as he walks around. He just circles a bit trying to find anything that would catch his attention.
<Electricity discharge on a cage you're stuck into? Really, Cass?>, he jokes with himself.
