Before the Pull: A Traveler's Journey

Post by TetNak » Mon Mar 24, 2014 1:12 am

Dates Unknown
The Maiden
Outside the Dragon Rocks
The Inner Sea

Chael'Ha Swiftstrider stood on the ship's deck as it came closer and closer to the Dragon Rocks. There were some great trepidation by the captain, and with good reason. There were sea snakes there, or so that was the rumor. Most ships never returned, or did only washed up nearly destroyed somewhere else. It was a dangerous place, but that is why Chael'Ha had come. Captain Grift steered very carefully, but the rain that had started to fall made things a bit more precarious. Thankfully, the sea's waves were relatively calm. "We are getting close," Grift says, "Man the harpoon, we might need it." He looks at Chael'Ha expectantly.

Chael'Ha looks at the horizon, drawing in a deep breath of air. It is good being on the move, on the road, doing holy work. She slides back her hood and lets the wind caress her short blond hair and the rain fall over it. When Grift asks her to 'man' the harpoon, she smiles. But she nods, walking over to the harpoon and getting ready to use it, looking around with sharp eyes.
I am assuming the harpoon is like a ballista on a tripod. Correct me if I am wrong.

Correct
Chael'Ha moves over to the massive mounted harpoon. They are not so common on the Inner Sea, but this was a ship that had been further than most the merchant vessels seen here. The Dragon Rocks were ahead, and the aptly named islands had every chance of testing Chael'Ha's aim. The waters grow more and more choppy the closer the ship gets to land. Land has not been called yet, but the captain seems sure they are close ..

Chael'Ha checks to see if the harpoon is properly loaded, and casts a quick spell of guidance on herself. Then she scans the waters and skies for any sign of trouble.
Cast guidance on self, then recast it every minute or so until something happens.
(Guidance: gives +1 on next attack or skill roll)

Loading the harpoon, Chael'Ha sees there are about a half dozen harpoons available to her. She hopes she will only need one.

"Land ho!" the man in the crow's nest yells, and Chael'Ha can barely make out the coastline in the distance. As her eyes look that way, sea water goes flying everywhere. The head of a monsterous serpent juts out about a hundred yards before them. "Devil in the water boys!" The ship moves up and down as the waves grow larger, throwing them about as the dragon submerges again. When they next see it, likely the creature will be upon them ...

Chael'Ha uses a second to make sure her longspear is in easy reach and that her greatsword is in its sheath. She whispers the same prayer again. "Fates grant me luck, guide my hand!" She points the harpoon in the general direction where she expects the monster to appear again, ready to shoot as soon as it reappears.

There are moments of waiting, and then, it happens. The ship is lurched high on a massive wave, which in fact is actually the serpent itself. Chael'Ha fires, the harpoon findings it target in the side of the sea snake's neck. Unfortunately, the ship careens to one side, throwing Chael'Ha off her feet. She slides down the deck which is now vertical, only stopping at the opposite rail. Many men are lost to the sea immediately, including the captain. Holding on for her life is the traveller, the sea water splashing over her as the ship threatens to capsize completely.

Fate has obviously chosen to play a game with Chael'Ha, and reacting fast, she plays along, and plays to win back her life that is at stake now. She holds on, looking around for some skiff or piece of flotsam to hold on to.

The water dumps on top of Chael'Ha's head. It takes everything she has to hold onto the rail before the ship tips the opposite way and sits upright on the waves. The chaos is so much she cannot get a bearing on anything right now, but after a few moments the waves start to settle. Chael'Ha looks about, noticing no one else on board. There is no sign of the serpent, and it appears the ship is whole, or nearly so ..

Everyone else is gone! Are the Fates playing some strange game with me again? Chael'Ha thinks. Where is the sea serpent? She looks around, and if the ship does not rock too much, he walks about, carefully to see what happened. She keeps her eyes mostly on the sea though, and also tries to spy some landmark. Her hand is on her sword, but she has not yet drawn it.
