Book 2: Chapter 2 - The Lost Colony

It was in the beginning of the reign of Malvegil of Arthedain that evil came to Arnor. For at that time the realm of Angmar arose in the North beyond the Ettenmoors. Its lands lay on both sides of the Mountains, and there were gathered many evil men, and Orcs, and other fell creatures. The lord of that land was known as the Witch-king, but it was not known until later that he was indeed the chief of the Ringwraiths, who came north with the purpose of destroying the Dúnedain in Arnor, seeing hope in their disunion, while Gondor was strong.

Ruins of the North is a game set in the north of Eriador in the ruins of Arnor between the years of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. Using the One Ring RPG system the game will explore the legacy of the Dunedain and the dangers returned to that part of Middle-earth.

The Lost Colony: The Pillared Hall

Post by Boronind » Tue Oct 17, 2017 2:38 pm

As the other dwarves poke and prod the pillared hall, looking for any signs or indicators that might help them solve the mystery of the doom of the lost colony, Blain, after listening to the tall people debate what to do about the door in front of them, interjects, "Yes, I think we should be cautious as we can sense the Shadow's presence here. So, I side with Telurin's suggested course of action." Blain waits for any of the others to chime in.

Halleth nods at Telurin and Blain's words. "Aye, that makes good sense. Let's see leave it as is and see what we can find elsewhere."

The door is left ajar, and those that dare to peer between the cracks of its opening shiver, for it seems as if your light does not pierce down into the shadow beyond it as far as it should.

You move to the left and the side chamber there. The single passage is carved with many runes about it, and the dwarves pause and read, "Beyond Lies the Record Chamber of Stoneholt". There is a some chatter among them , then they press forward eager to see. You though the arch and enter into a simple stone chamber set with many shelves. A pile of rubble is set in the middle of the chamber, having crushed a great deal of things that once were here. Dorin gazes up, "Blast it! Look, that cave in has crumbled the light shaft. There should have been a shaft from the ceiling up to the mountain's side to let natural light in, but it seems to have collapsed."

The chamber itself has no way out save the way you came in.

Telurin looks about in the room for any records, searching the shelves and on the floor near them.

At the back of the company, Dŵrgi peers up at the collapsed shaft. A bit of natural light would have been welcome, and perhaps a hint of fresh air. Instead, all she can see is a shattered reminder of the possibility of entombment. "These the records wanted?" she asks, staring up strangely compelled by the cracks in the stone.

Hartley begins searching through piles of ruble and whatever odd papers and books he can find, looking for any records of what might have transpired, realizing as he does so that he probably won't be able to make much sense of the dwarvish runes, but still a large record book might provide the information the dwarves need.

Halleth too joins in the hunt, putting his many long years looking for rare Numenorean artifacts to use looking for any records that might be helpful. If he finds anything in Westron, he will pause and skim through it himself. Anything in Dwarven, he of course hands over to the dwarves.

Blain and the others join in the search through the rubble for anything that might help them find out what has happened to the colony.

The Lost Colony: The Collapse!

The search behind, people scatter about inspecting the chamber. The casual search turns up a few rotted records, useless pages here and there, and plenty of rubble. Its Blain that finds the treasure, he pulls from under a pile of rocks the large book, a record of the colony! It is mostly in tact. It is written in several hands, and languages, parts are in Westron, others in Sindar, and some in the secret tongue of the dwarves themselves. It is the entire point of this chamber to have found the book in such good shape.

Before he can start to read any of it in any depth, Hartley tugs at a stone to get at something under it and there is a shake in the chamber. A sudden crumbling of the fallen pile of rocks. Dirt and debris is kicked loose, and Halleth shouts, "Its going to cave in!" The entire supporting structure that is the caved in pile gives out, and the ceiling, and the mountain above it starts to come crashing down into the chamber! You have only seconds before you are buried alive under tons of falling rock!

Having already been studying the ceiling with rapt curiosity, Dŵrgi watched the first tumbling pebbles as if gazing on a waterfall, hearing the sound without realizing its significance. Halleth's shout shakes her from her dread-induced reverie, and swift as an autumn storm she bounds out of the records hall from her position near the entrance, not stopping until she's soundly in the center of the Pillared Hall, where she turns to watch the others arriving, counting them and watching for injuries.
