Book 3: Chapter 2 - Into the Cold North

It was in the beginning of the reign of Malvegil of Arthedain that evil came to Arnor. For at that time the realm of Angmar arose in the North beyond the Ettenmoors. Its lands lay on both sides of the Mountains, and there were gathered many evil men, and Orcs, and other fell creatures. The lord of that land was known as the Witch-king, but it was not known until later that he was indeed the chief of the Ringwraiths, who came north with the purpose of destroying the Dúnedain in Arnor, seeing hope in their disunion, while Gondor was strong.

Ruins of the North is a game set in the north of Eriador in the ruins of Arnor between the years of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. Using the One Ring RPG system the game will explore the legacy of the Dunedain and the dangers returned to that part of Middle-earth.

Although Heddwyn's spells are things Telurin has never seen in his life, the light of his lamp fills him with confidence.
Spend Hope to pass Fear test
Did we get a Battle roll? If not can you do that? I will definitely spend a Battle die on this attack if so.
Telurin throws his small spear at Heddwyn, hoping to bring an end to just the leader, and that the rest of the Hill-men will stand down.
Rearward. Throw small Spear - r5, k4 - reminder since it's been a while!

I did Battle Roll: Hartley had 2, Telurin 1

Telurin: Hope to pass the Fear test previously
Round 2 Halleth, Hugo, Tellurin, NPCs, Hartley, Enemies
Halleth steps over the hill man who lays on the ground before him and moves to the real threat with the way cleared now. His blade slices into Heddwyns's shoulder, but his armor holds, if just barely. The blow knocks Essylt's father back a step and put him off balance.

Just then a spear flies through the air and lodges itself into his thigh! He screams and clutches at the wound, holding with one bloody hand as he pulls the weapon from his flesh. "You with both pay for that!"

Hugo passes out from the pain as the women rush to find something to bandage him with. The two guards block the way of Hartley, and its unclear if they will go for Freach or Halleth or the Lamp Holder.

Hartley...

Oops! For that throw I was supposed to roll 6 dice, keep 5, if I used the Battle die. But I said r5, k4, and that's what you did. In other words . . . I still have the Battle die, but will use it this turn.
Telurin's lamp continues to shine, drawing the Hill-men irresistibly toward it.
Must spend Hate to keep ignoring it.
As two of them near, he readies his Great Spear, seeking an opening in both of their defenses.
Open. Swift Strokes Called Shot. Now I'll spend that Battle die - r6, k5. If one "6" is rolled, then I can attack two Hill-men.

Round 2 Heroes, Enemies, Allies
Round 3 Telurin, Halleth, Hartley, Enemies, Allies
Hartley draws an arrow, and notes he has but 3 arrows left inside his quiver now. He takes aim to try and shoot the man through the heart. As he goes to fire the flash of light and shadow from the lamp and the bodies moving in and our distracts him and his arrow flies wide shattering on a door on the far side of the room.

The two hillmen left leap to attack, one ignores the lamp and strikes at Hartley, but the little Hobbit tumbles under the spear stike.

The other turns to Telurin and his lamp, "Douse that lamp!" He stabs, and nearly spits Telurin on the end of his spear. The effort to avoid being hit takes a little effort and the elves endurance is tested some, but not much.

Then Heddwyn presses on Halleth, "Dunedain! I see the lust in your eye for my daughter! You will not have her you murdering slave driver!" His own spear slams into the shoulder of Halleth and pierces through armor and into flesh and bone. With a twist he makes the Ranger cry out in pain before Halleth pulls himself free bleeding badly from wound.

Essylt shouts, "Father stop this!" Freach guards the women and Hugo, but you can see he's prepared to charge if things turn sour more. Your guide cries out, "Hugo is badly wounded! We don't have much time for him." She's frantically trying to bandage his wounds.

Telurin turns his focus on the two remaining minions. His great spear flashes crimson in the light as it swiftly strikes out like an adder over and over again driving the point into the throat of one man and the belly of the other. Both of Heddwyn's companions now lay dead or near dead on the ground gasping for life that is quickly running away.

Only the fallen Hillman, the dark sorcerer Heddwyn remains as Halleth and Hartley....

Heddwyn the Witch-servant of Angmar

Post by Vardaen » Thu Oct 29, 2020 3:27 pm

An arrow whizzes from the rear as Hartley fire nearly his last shot into the leg of the Witch-servant. Heddyn staggers and falters, and so Halleth sees the opening he needs. He leaps forward pressing the advantage and drives his blade into the stomach of the foul hill man turned servant of the Shadow.

The blade pierces armor and flesh, and begins to drive into the meat of Essylt's father. The blade moves with ease into his flesh, slicing as it goes. Halleth need only drive it a little further and the man shall be no more. Heddyn topples to his knees as Halleth bares down over him pushing his blade, blood flowing from the wound.

Essylt screams, "No! Father! No!"
Hartley: Rearward Shoot Heddyn: Rolled: Feat Die: 7* Success Die: 5,2,3,5Totaling: 22+3 = 25 Hit for 5 End

Halleth: Forward vs Heddwyn: Rolled: Feat Die: 4* Success Die: 4,6t,5 Totaling: 19 with 1 success hit for 12 End

Heddyn is at 0 Endurance, knocked down

Halleth can finish him here and now without need to roll, he can just shove the blade in the rest of the way.

Or he can spare the man leaving him on the brink (either way the man isn't fighting back)

In other circumstances, Halleth might simply have finished Heddwyn off. But he couldn't do now. He spares the man's life, withdrawing his sword and instead plants his foot on the fallen man's chest. "Be glad your daughter is here, you rogue. I can't bring myself to finish you off in front of her--unless you try something stupid and attack again." He calls to Essylt, "Come, tend your father's wounds." As he pauses to think, he realizes it may be just as well they spared the man's life, because he might answer their questions.

As Essylt sees to her father, Halleth binds the man's hands and places a gag in his mouth to keep him from causing trouble.
