Re: Chapter 1: Uncertain Friends and Certain Enemies
"Friends," Calpurnia says, loud enough for everyone in the atrium of the villa to hear, and it was packed from front to back. "I wish Ærthel was here to witness this day, a day he had long cherished. His spirit endures, I assure you all, and one day he shall return to us to know our peace of heart and cheer of spirit."
The Roman woman pulls back a cloth cover on an ornate table that rests behind her, and in front of the small pool of water that is filled with flowers. Upon it is a seax and a celtic longsword. All the britons recognized it as King Eus' blade which was recovered after the Wild Hunt was defeated. Traharen had seen it given to Prince Berwyn for safe keeping. It was apart of the ceremony, although not officially Berwyn's to own.
The first act of the wedding were to exchange swords, the woman first, and say vows of protection for one another and their family. Bearnoch nods to her daughter to proceed.

Bearnoch takes the longsword and offers it hilt-first to Berwyn saying, "I offer you this sword. Do you vow to use it to protect me, my children, and my tribe?"

Berwyn takes the hilt of the sword and replies to Bearnoch, "With this sword I will protect you as my wife. I will protect the children of our union. I will protect your tribe which today has become my own people. I will defend these things with my life and honor. I pledge a sacred oath before all these assembled here today. May they bear witness and hold me to its fulfillmet."
Berwyn then places the longsword in its scabbard which hangs at his side. He reaches to the table and takes hold of the seax. He thinks to himself how this weapon looks so different than his own sword and yet serves such a similar purpose, to defend and if necessary kill. It a way it symbolizes the difference between these two peoples. They are very different and yet share the same needs and desires...
He looks Bearnoch in the eyes as he hands her the seax hilt first. "Will you take this blade and with it swear to defend me as your husband, our children and my people, who are now your own?"

Bearnoch hold her head high and gazes back at Berwyn. She takes hold of the seax and replies, "I vow to defend you as my husband. I vow to defend our children. I vow to defend your tribe as my own, as indeed they are."

Seated nearby, Amblaïb smiles as his brother is wed, though in the distance he seems to hear the bell toll for Britain. This union was a momentous one, no less so than when Claudius of the Romans had broken the Britons at the fords with his elephants, and likely would turn out to be just as tumultuous. His place was already decided, but what these two could achieve was not.
It was going to be an interesting time.

Nuallan stood quitely as the ceremony took place. As the sword of King Eus was sheathed by Berwyn Nuallan couldn't help but wince. Not because he felt Berwyn was unworthy of the blade but because it reminded him of the Wild Hunt and what they had done to his people. A people now that were all but extinct. Only by merging with the Angles would they be able to forge ahead. Nuallan sighed before forcing his mind to bury such melancholy thoughts. Today was a day of celebration and Nuallan looked upon the soon to be married couple and smiled.

Rhedyn watches the ceremony with detached interest, making notes of the foreign wedding ceremony. She wishes she felt joy for the newly weds, but instead she feels, not her usual grouchy mood, but a dark foreboding about what lay ahead. But she would keep her thoughts to herself and no one would be surprised if she seemed to be in a sour mood, since she usually was.

Calpurnia steps forward and places her hands on both the groom and bride's heads. "So be it."
She steps forward and collects a pouch from the altar nearby. "Here," she says, extending two rings to both Berwyn and Bearnoch. "Your rings. These rings were mine and my husband's. They are now yours. Place them on each others' hands."
