Timeline

Fallen Times is going to be a post-apocalyptic role-playing game set in the wild inhospitable world of mankind’s ruin, decades after a series of devastating wars that brought the human race to the brink of extinction. The descendants of the apocalypse’s survivors scavenge the remnants of the time before the Fall, struggling to build a new life amidst the ruins of the old. For now, we're using this thread to discuss just how that game is going to work and be set up.

The day that fire rained from the sky was a dark day,
but in some ways,
it was just the beginning . . .
The Timeline of the Fall
1990 – 1991
  • The United States of America enters the Persian Gulf War with its Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Despite their superior tactics and firepower, the end result is quite horrific. Almost immediately upon the United States involvement in the war, the oil fields of Iraq, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia are set ablaze and then later bombarded by SCUD missiles bearing fiery payloads. Oil export halts almost immediately as U.S. troops try to control the flames. Prices of oil double, then quadruple and quadruple again as the World panics. Before anything can begin to resemble normal, North West and Trans-Persian pipelines are destroyed shortly thereafter.

The West's seven biggest oil companies, led by the Exxon Corporation, immediately announce that they will be unable to fulfill their supply contracts. The United States eventually withdraws its forces triumphantly, but not before the entire world has suffered a major loss. It is during this time that virulent new bio-weapons are tested in the field as well. Their effects are recorded and the long-term presence of DU (depleted uranium) munitions only adds even more data for the researchers to collect in the following years to come. All in all, the entire ordeal is a rather bloody one and presents quite the learning curve for all parties involved in the conflict to try and overcome.
1993
  • Two years after these previously mentioned events, society has been thrown into a state of near-complete decay. Economy is nonexistent; people have fled out into the less-populated regions for safety only to find that Marauders are roaming there for fuel and resources. It will take nearly every resource that the U.S. Government has available to maintain any semblance of order. New refineries are built, but not nearly fast enough. American businesses coordinate their efforts to once more begin drilling and producing oil in the United States of America and other regions. Still however, these efforts not nearly fast enough. The demands for fuel are simply outweighing the amount of any existing supplies of processed oil much too greatly. Prices continue to skyrocket and the chaos ensues.

The price of gold skyrockets, along with inflation. In an attempt to save the economy and conserve fuel, martial law is announced across the planet. Some countries are taken over entirely by the military. Many economies collapse, companies file bankruptcy one after another. Massive lay-offs cause the heavy industry to shut down. Worldwide panic soon turns into riots. People try to withdraw their savings from banks, only to see the bank doors nailed shut. Gas stations are quickly sucked dry by people fighting over what they believed were the last drops of gasoline. Ordinary citizens start to arm themselves. Lesser populated areas are slowly taken over by bike gangs. The remaining oil tankers are continuously attacked. Vehicles that have run out of fuel are abandoned on the roads. For a time, intercity communication stops entirely.
1994 - 2005
  • Desperate for solutions, the World’s leaders band together. New alliances are formed and some of the existing treaties, broken. The planet struggles to restore order to its people. Canada and Russia quickly become the two leading competitors for the number one spot of providing the Earth with its oil reserves as newly built refineries sluggishly begin to pump out barrel after barrel. Meanwhile, the Middle East slowly withdraws its assistance to the World in lieu of monopolizing what oil reserves that it has left and selling them off to the highest bidder. Though the planet actually appears to be making positive progress towards restoring itself back to normal, its leaders are constantly bickering and quarreling over 'who' and 'how' they should first get distributed. Over time, the bickering escalates to arguing, and then the arguing into threats. Threats of Nuclear War.
2006
  • North Korea announces its first successful detonation of a nuclear device. This combined with the threat of the country possessing long-range missiles is more than enough reason to merit their inclusion among the current peace talks going on with the rest of the World's leaders to try and avert a nuclear confrontation. Russia seems to be split in its decision to disarm any of their devices, whereas the rest of China and all of Japan are in agreement with the United States that something must be done before the planet is thrown into a state of further ruin. North Korea and the Middle East however, refuse outright. Tensions mount as the discussions continue and any type of an immediate solution to the issue seems to be quite distant.
The Great Fall
  • World War Three begins on Saturday February 13th, 2007 with the launching of a first strike by the United States of America against Russia its Middle Eastern Allies. The attack itself was initiated by the U.S. after the NORAD command center detects a combined missile attack-force coming in over the North Pole. Regrettably, it isn't until much too late that the experts at NORAD discover the fact that apparent 'attack' is in truth, a cleverly-hacked computer training program that was deliberately fed into the NORAD computers and communication network by a covert conglomerate of North Korean factions.

Due to this deception, the U.S. successfully manages to knock out a good majority of the opposition’s nuclear arsenal. Sadly however, there is more than enough weaponry to effectively destroy the United States of America still left intact. As the three Nations exchange their nuclear gifts with one another, the rest of the World joins in on the exchange; each newcomer to the onslaught using the war as an excuse to 'finalize' their age-old disputes with rival countries. North Korea was among the first to do so with its long term rival, South Korea.

While the rest of the world joins in on the nuclear madness, retaliatory missiles begin to impact the United States. The first targets in the U.S. are its military bases and missile launching points, so that any remaining military strength could be destroyed all that much easier. As these missiles fell, others began targeting on population and manufacturing centers with a most devastating result. Soon after their impact, it was found that a number of the missiles targeted for civilian areas carried a special form of 'biological' warhead containing a variety of virulent man-made diseases; each one designed to decimate (if not worse) the population while leaving their surrounding buildings and other materials still intact.

As the days roll on, lingering radiation and lethal diseases take their toll. As the bodies piled up, civilization collapses completely. Due to the destruction of transport systems and the spread of nuclear ignited fires, food becomes scarce. Famine stalks the land, slaying at will. The survivors find that medical centers are either swamped or destroyed, the death toll from disease mounting. Within 6 months, 95% of the world’s population is dead. Those who remained are characterized by being self-centered, selfish, and are guided by man’s baser instincts as civilization’s thin veneer is quickly stripped away.
The Here & Now
  • The current year is 2052, roughly 45 years after World War 3 - though most of the World's remaining populace is completely ignorant to the fact.
