Chapter 2 - Dark of the Moon

“...in the Riddermark of Rohan the Rohirrim, the Horse-lords, dwell, and there are no horses like those that are bred in that great vale between the Misty Mountains and the White.” - From The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien

Torwin-Song 3:
Feat Die: 3*
Success Die: 2,6t,5
Totaling: 16 with 1 success
At the sound of the singing the men jump up drawing swords, ready to fight. Something in the music, whether the word or the melody, or the voice that delivers it begins to ease their spirits some. A few swords are lowered and none of them move until the singing stops. As Torwin finishes, the leader of the men calls out in thickly accented Rhorrim. "You are trespassing straw-heads. This is the land of Nan Curunir, and you are not welcome. Come out and show yourselves. Make no sudden movements, or we will kill you. Do you understand?"

Torwin whispers to Istril, "Maybe you should introduce us. Ask if they know Imhar. They may feel less threatened by you, being a woman and of Gondor. No offence, I hope."

He then replies to the Man, "Yes, understood." He slowly puts the arrow in his hand back into its quiver and stands, slinging his bow behind him. He walks carefully toward the fire, which being untended for some time, had begun to burn low.

"Please," Istril speaks up at Torwin's urging, quickly releasing the grip she had upon her sword's hilt and standing slowly to reveal herself. She casts back her hood to reveal her features. Her words are in Westron, for she does not understand the tongue of the Mark. "I beseech you - do not make haste to shed blood."

The sound of the foreign woman's voice causes the Dunlendings to pause, surprised that she was not one of the Rohirrim. They seem to understand what she says. Although it takes them a moment to respond, this time in Westron. "We do not allow trespassers into this land on orders from the wizard. Explain yourselves. Why are you here? What reason do you have to enter our lands?"

You sense that the group of warriors has stepped back their aggressive posture a bit, but they do not lower their weapons. For a moment they are willing to listen, but you have the feeling that a single misstep might lead to a confrontation that you most likely would not win.

Hereweald joins the others, flanking Istril, clear he will protect her, but he makes no sign of aggression toward the men, he does not hold his blade or even his shield. He even smiles, and then gazes about. In the common speech he joins in, "We are east of the mountains are we not? We thought this was part of Rohan, not that of the Fabled White Wizard, who is ally with our king. Any trespass on our part is by pure mistake I assure you that."
Edit: Sorry. Courtesy I suppose. Spend Hope if its close enough.

Since this is an encounter, do you want to include a skill roll to go along with your statement?

Torwin listens carefully, wondering if the Dunlending is telling the truth. He was almost certain they had avoided the lands of the wizard...and even then Saruman had always been at least neutral toward Rohan, if not an ally in bad times. So why would he have patrols ambushing Rohirrim? It did not add up.

"I am Istril of Gondor, a guest of King Theoden. These are my companions, Hereweald and Torwin, men of honor who bear strength and skill at arms. We ride on errand from Reeve Ealdulf to the home of Lord Héamarh of Brocdene, bringing sad tidings." Istril pauses a moment to allow the man to understand her. "It is a small chance, but do you know a man called Imhar?"

The Dunlendings listen silently as Herewald speaks. The leader of the group then replies, "Many of our people have come to serve the wizard. He offers us protection and in return we keep a close eye on the borders of his land. Maybe you came too far north by accident. Maybe not. There is little trust between our people and the Strawheads. We will give you the benefit of the doubt, if you leave now. Head east a couple of miles. Then you may go as you will. Do not return north or we will slay you without a second thought."

Torwin listens to the tone of the man's voice. There is obvious mistrust. He wonders if someone is not feeding the mistrust of these men against the Rohirrim. Certainly Saruman would not be trying to pit the two peoples against one another.

To Istril the man says, "I do not know this Imhar. Brocdne though is not far from here. once you head east, turn to the north. You will fins a valley some 20 miles deep into the foothills of Methedras. Héamarh dwells in the opening of that valley. It is no more than half a days journey. Now be gone."

Will it make a difference if any of us spend Hope?
