Book 2, Act II: Scion
A quick conference of whispers can be heard - evidently there are more than one of them. The table itself rises up and starts flying towards Mercutio, but instead of making a beeline for him it starts to sway and waver in the air, before coming to a stop and falling to the ground with a thump. The whispering is still to indistinct to make out, but it sounds like an argument is taking place.
A different individual voice starts up from a different direction. "Proper Lordship? How is Lady Allis' legacy continuing? We miss her, we were friends from her childhood. But the only ones we see these days are vagrants and thieves. The Tribune makes no trouble, but she does not belong so we ignore her."

"We knew Lady Allis not, but her inheritance has been passed to us as stewards of her estate" Mercutio figures that his usual ways probably should not be risked on such creatures, whatever they were.

Book 2, Act II: Scion
An orange tabby cat appears out of midair, looking at Mercutio. A moment later it transforms into a knee-high creature, a hairy old man with more beard than flesh. Mercutio recognizes it from folk stories as a domovoi, a "house spirit" to the commonfolk, a fey to the learned. They are often the dearest of house spirits as peasants often take great pains to coax a domovoi to follow them to a new house, commonly leaving bowls of milk and slices of fresh bread in the corner of the home in thanks.
"Inherits? New family?" He sounds excited. A moment later two additional cats appears and similarly transform, eyes shining bright. "You come to live? Restore the house? Continue her legacy?"

"We would certainly like to," Astraea said. "Will you permit us to dwell here with you in peace?"

For Emilia it hasn't quite clicked. Being known to the unlearned as spirits, the domovoi shouldn't have bodies, one could reason, and she takes in their forms with disquiet.
"Not ghosts? Are they shape changers...? Lady Allis and her home must be very dear to you. How did you come to be here?"

Bala steps forward slightly towards the assembled domovoi. "We would love to hear stories of Lady Allis, dear spirits. Wood and stone makes a house, the inhabitants make a home."

"Fey, if you ask some scholar of the sort you can't tell if his beard is gray from age or the dust" Mercutio answers to the question of ghosts. "I prefer to use whatever folks prefer themselves, not what others deems proper".
